Chapter 2

Autor: Bowl of Rice
A staff member passing by noticed Hugh kneeling in front of Zoey and teased them with a smile.

"You two are such a sweet couple. Giving her a foot massage right here in public? You're making me blush."

Zoey's cheeks immediately turned pink.

Hugh gave an awkward laugh but didn't correct her.

I didn't say a word. I turned around and went back to my seat. My eyes stung, but I held it together.

Zoey snuck a glance at the display board. The moment she realized we'd missed our turn, her cramp seemed to disappear.

She pulled Hugh to his feet, then turned to me with a sheepish smile. "Lynette, I'm really sorry. I made you miss your turn again."

Hugh helped her settle back into her seat before turning to glare at me. "Why did you have to keep rushing us? Look what happened. Zoey's foot cramped up. Couldn't you just wait a little?"

Zoey gave his sleeve a couple of halfhearted tugs, as if she were trying to stick up for me.

"Hugh, don't say that. Lynette's just eager to make it official with you. It's just... you guys are going to have to take another number now."

I didn't answer or even look at them. I got up, walked over to the ticket machine, and took another number.

The staff member beside the machine recognized me and sighed.

"Miss, you've already missed your turn several times. Don't let it happen again. This is the last batch of numbers we're giving out this morning. If you miss this one, you'll have to come back this afternoon."

I glanced back at the waiting area. Hugh was leaning in to whisper something to Zoey. Whatever he said had both of them laughing so hard their shoulders shook.

"I understand. Thank you."

This was the last chance I was giving Hugh.

Ticket in hand, I went back to my seat. A moment later, my phone started ringing inside my bag.

It was Mom.

I answered.

"Lyn, are you and Hugh married yet? Didn't you leave at 8:00 am.? I've reheated the food twice already. Why aren't you home?"

I looked down, not knowing what to tell her. The silence dragged on long enough for Mom to realize something was wrong.

"Zoey's there too, isn't she? Is this her doing?"

My eyes stung, and all the hurt I'd been holding in hit me at once.

"Yeah. Because of her, we've missed our turn twice."

Mom took a deep breath.

"Lyn, once is one thing. Twice is bad enough. But don't let there be a third time. If he can't even take this seriously, getting married isn't going to make things any better. Put Hugh on the phone. I want to talk to him."

I turned and held the phone out to him. "My mom wants to talk to you."

Hugh had been in the middle of an animated conversation with Zoey. His expression tightened at the interruption, but he took the phone anyway and softened his voice.

"Jennifer, what's wrong?"

"You two aren't married yet, so it's still Mrs. Gearhart to you. Lyn got up early, did her makeup, and headed out first thing because she wanted you two to get the first number and be the first couple to make it official.

"You showing up late was bad enough. How have you two gone through all this and still not gotten married?"

Hugh shot me a glare. "Did Lyn complain to you again? It's really not a big deal. Zoey had something come up, so we missed our number. We already got another one. We just have to wait a few more minutes. It won't hold us up."

His casual tone immediately set Mom off.

"Not a big deal? Missing your turn when you're supposed to be getting married isn't a big deal? Hugh, you're there to marry Lyn. Why did you bring another woman along and let her cause all this trouble?

"And what is Zoey doing tagging along when someone else is getting married? Does she have no shame?"

Mom was yelling loud enough for Zoey to hear every word.

Zoey's eyes immediately welled up, and tears started rolling down her cheeks. She leaned toward the phone.

"Mrs. Gearhart, I'm sorry. I really didn't mean for any of this to happen. Lynette and I have been friends for years. She's getting married, and I just wanted to be here to see it for myself. I honestly didn't mean any harm."

The moment Hugh saw her crying, his tone sharpened.

"Mrs. Gearhart, please show Zoey some respect. She's Lynette's friend too. She meant well. This isn't that big a deal. There's no reason to blow it out of proportion and start yelling at me."

When I didn't respond, Zoey seemed to take my silence as a good sign. She fidgeted with her hands and glanced around before finally getting to the real reason she'd approached me."Lynette, you and Mr. Hyde have plenty of connections. Isn't there some cushy job you could get me here at the hotel? Or maybe something at Mr. Hyde's company? I'll take anything. I just can't keep waiting on people like this."She looked up at me with an eager, pleading smile. It was as if everything that had happened between us had been forgotten. She still thought she could come to me whenever she needed something, just like she always had.I didn't bother answering her.Instead, I turned to the hotel manager, who was still furious with her. "Fire her and make sure she never works here again."I didn't spare another glance at the fear in Zoey's eyes. I tightened my hold on Devon's arm and walked straight past her toward the exit.Zoey froze for a second before panic set in. Then she came tearing aft

Devon said coldly, "I have no respect for you, Hugh. You were born into money, but you've got big ambitions and nothing to back them up. And when it came to being a decent husband, you couldn't even stay faithful."The only thing you've ever had worth bragging about is that someone as incredible as Lynette once agreed to marry you. But you were too damn stupid to know how good you had it, and you threw it all away."He stared down at Hugh. "Now get lost. Don't make me pay your parents a visit over this. If this gets ugly, I won't be the one embarrassed."Hugh clenched his jaw and watched as our car pulled away, kicking up dust behind us. In the end, he didn't dare follow.Devon drove with one hand on the wheel. When we stopped at a red light, he reached over with his free hand, covered mine with his, and gave it a gentle squeeze."Do you want me to have security keep him away from you? I'll call the Jamesons again tonight and make it clear that he's to leave you alone."I shook m

The hatred in Hugh's eyes made Zoey shrink back, but she wasn't ready to give up. She forced herself to keep going and reached for his hand again, sounding close to tears."Hugh, don't say that. You've treated me so well lately. I know how you feel about me. You're just hurting right now because you still can't let Lynette go."But if you give me a chance, I'll love you and treat you right. We can be happy together. Wouldn't that be better?"Hugh shook her off again. "Get the hell away from me! Who said I wanted to be with you? If it weren't for Lynette, I wouldn't even know who the hell you are."Zoey stared at him, stunned. Then she saw the disgust on his face, and it finally sank in.Hugh had turned on her. He was going to cut her off and dump all the blame on her as if none of it had been his fault.Zoey's shock quickly gave way to humiliation and panic. She shrieked, "Hugh! What the hell is that supposed to mean? So now you're done with me? Don't stand there acting innocent

I reached across the table and tapped Hugh's phone."Hugh, are you lying to me, or are you lying to yourself? Do you honestly think everything you've done for Zoey can be written off as friendship?"How many times did I tell you I wanted that necklace you bought her? I told you I loved it. I told you I wanted one. I even sent you the link. And what did you say? You couldn't get one. You said you could get it for me another time."I didn't raise my voice, but every word hit home. Hugh's face drained of color.I kept going. "Then you turned around and bought it for Zoey. Hugh, do you really think you can play me for a fool? You massaged her ankle right in front of me, your own fiancée. You played games with her."You were willing to let us miss our turn because you insisted on waiting for her while she was in the bathroom. And you expect me to believe that's just you looking out for a friend?"You know exactly what's going on, but you keep pretending you don't, and Zoey has no sham

Hugh had nothing to say after Mom tore into him. His face had gone pale.Mom pointed toward the stairs. "Now you want to know why? Too late. Get lost! Whatever Lynette does from now on is none of your business. You don't get a say in her life anymore!"Then she slammed the door in his face.Hugh still refused to give up. He drove straight to the bridal salon where I was supposed to have my dress fitting. He hurried up to the front desk, still out of breath, and asked about the appointment. The receptionist gave him an awkward look. "Sir, Ms. Gearhart called about an hour ago and canceled today's fitting. She also said... the wedding is off."Hugh swayed, catching himself on the counter before he could fall.He still refused to believe it. He called the wedding planner, the hotel, the emcee, and everyone else involved with the wedding. Every call ended the same way."Ms. Gearhart already called to cancel. The wedding is off."For the rest of the day, Hugh's world went eerily qu

Hugh snapped into the phone, "What the hell are you talking about?"But the second the words left his mouth, he remembered how I'd told him we were done on our last call. His heart started pounding. In a panic, he pulled up my social media profile, only to find nothing. His voice faltered. "Lynette... she must be mad at me. She must've blocked me from seeing her posts. Where did you see it? Send it to me!"His friend didn't waste a second. A screenshot came through almost immediately.Hugh opened it and zoomed in. The marriage certificate looked completely official. The embossed seal was clearly visible, and the issue date was today. It was real, and his ears started ringing. His friend kept talking on the other end. "Hugh? Are you okay? What the hell happened?"But Hugh couldn't hear a single word.He froze in his seat, and his grip went slack. His phone slipped from his hand, bounced off Zoey, and landed beside her leg in the passenger seat. For a moment, he just stared bla
