Chapter 7

Author: Brew of the Zephyr
"Are you really sure about this?" Hannah Kent held Irina's resignation letter, still feeling it was a pity to lose her.

Irina nodded with a smile. "Yes. I'm an only child, and my parents are getting older, so I've decided to move back home and build my career there."

"What about Prof. Parker? What about his job?"

Hannah knew everything about Irina's relationship.

They went through four years of long-distance dating in college. Later, Irina moved far away to Sterling City after graduation to marry Uriah. Everyone believed their marriage was rock-solid.

More importantly, Uriah was the youngest professor at a top college, with a bright future ahead of him. Hence, quitting was never an option.

"I'm getting a divorce."

"A divorce?"

Seeing Hannah's shocked expression, Irina smiled. "Yes. It's already in process."

Irina had always been calm and composed. Although she seemed easygoing, she had her own stubborn streak. Once she decided on something, she would not look back.

"Alright, then. I wish you nothing but success in your future," said Hannah.

She did not try to talk her out of it and simply signed the resignation form.

After that, Irina spent the entire day handing over her work responsibilities.

That evening, the divorce agreement was delivered to the office by courier. Once she had carefully reviewed all the terms, Irina signed it decisively.

That night, Hannah invited everyone out to dinner as a farewell for Irina. After dinner, someone suggested going to karaoke, and Irina did not refuse, joining them instead.

Because Uriah disliked such gatherings, Irina rarely attended gatherings with her coworkers. She had respected all of Uriah's preferences, only for everything to end so miserably.

As if perfectly timed, the night ended with a coworker singing 'Strangers Again.'

When Irina got home, it was already past midnight. As she opened the door, she found Uriah sitting on the couch, smoking.

Hearing Irina come in, Uriah quickly stubbed out his cigarette and stood up from the couch. He seemed apologetic as he said, "I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself and smoked in the house."

"It's fine." Irina no longer wanted this house anyway. Hence, she did not care if he smoked in the living room.

After changing her shoes, Irina headed toward the bathroom.

Uriah blocked her path, determined to have a proper conversation with her tonight. "Irina, I need to talk to you about something."

Irina was exhausted and had no energy to argue. She stopped and looked at him calmly. "Okay, go ahead."

Uriah had thought that his attitude this morning would have made Irina angry, that she would give him the silent treatment. He assumed that her coming home so late was her way of throwing a tantrum.

To his surprise, Irina was completely calm. Even though he still felt vaguely uneasy inside, he knew he could not delay this any longer.

"Ms. White received a critical condition notice today. The doctors said she could pass at any time. She has a final wish and hopes that..."

Uriah believed he had done nothing wrong, yet he could not bring himself to finish the sentence.

Irina said softly, "She hopes you'll take care of Sophie for the rest of her life and wants to see you two get married?"

She still remembered everything Sophie had said earlier that day, and she had stayed silent then because she wanted Uriah to say it himself.

He finally did it, and it was clear he knew how hurtful it sounded.

"You already knew?" Uriah was somewhat surprised.

Nonetheless, since it was all out in the open now, he had no choice but to reason with Irina. He explained, "Irina, when I was little, my parents were always busy. Once when I got sick, Ms. White carried me to the hospital in the pouring rain and stayed awake to care for me for three days straight. She saved me. I can't let her die with regrets, so can you–"

Before Uriah could finish, Irina cut him off. "You don't need to say any more. I agree."

After speaking, she even smiled slightly.

That smile instantly lifted much of the gloom weighing on Uriah's heart. He happily pulled Irina into his arms and hugged her tight. "I knew it! I knew you'd understand. My precious Irina is the most understanding person in the world."

He continued, "Oh, and Irina... My marriage to Sophie will be fake, just a ceremony to satisfy Ms. White. I won't invite many people, but if there are rumors, I still hope you can help explain the situation for me."

Irina remembered that on that hot summer day, she had given Luther a piece of candy and a Band-Aid."So we've known each other all along."Luther nodded. "That's right. We knew each other a long time ago. I was just unlucky. I missed you once, and I almost missed you for an entire lifetime.""What do you mean?" Irina was sobbing inconsolably. She thought her heart had long since died, yet it started beating again."I'll tell you slowly later… Hey, why are you crying again? Don't cry... Seeing you cry only makes my wound hurt more."Luther reached out to wipe away Irina's tears, but Irina swatted his hand away. She huffed. "You have a pain pump hooked up. What pain are you talking about? Stop lying to me.""It really hurts... My heart hurts.""Nice try. Do you want some water?""When are you going to make us official?""I asked if you want water.""I do. As long as my girlfriend pours it, I'd even drink poison.""Who's your girlfriend? Did I agree to that?""You did. You sa

When Luther's parents–Terrence Zimmerman and Cynthia Lowell–arrived at the hospital, they saw Irina covered in blood. The couple checked her over several times, and only after confirming Irina was not injured did they breathe a sigh of relief. However, Luther's parents' expressions immediately turned grave. Despite the heavy mood, Cynthia still walked over to Irina and gripped her hands tightly. She said, "You must've been terrified, dear. Don't worry. Luther's tough. A little injury like this is nothing.""I'm so sorry, Mrs. Zimmerman. He was trying to save me. I'm so sorry..."Irina broke down again, like a child who had done something terribly wrong, unable to even look Cynthia in the eye. The people around could tell that saying anything right now would be useless given her state.Time ticked by minute by minute. When the operating room light finally went out, and the doctor emerged, Irina was the first to rush over."Doctor, how is Luther?""He's fine. No vital organs were

Since Sophie had valid psychiatric documentation, Irina had no recourse against her. Outside the police station, Uriah wanted to say something to Irina. However, Luther stood between them, giving Uriah no opportunity."Irina, I need to talk to you alone.""She doesn't want to talk to you."Luther had been holding this in for a long time, and today, he had things he needed to say to Uriah face-to-face."Uriah, what exactly do you want? You and Irina are divorced, so please stop interfering with her life."Also, keep your woman under control. A mental illness certificate is not a free pass with me."Hearing that, Uriah's competitiveness flared up. He let out a cold laugh as he looked back at Luther."So what if we're divorced? I was with Irina for eight years. All her firsts were mine. What do you have?"Mr. Zimmerman, do you think I don't know who you are? I have known about you for a long time, and I never cared, because you are just a pathetic loser who could only spy on my

When Luther said dinner, he really just took Irina out for a meal. After dinner, it was Irina who suggested they walk around the shopping district.Holding a cup of hot latte, Irina walked shoulder to shoulder with Luther through the dense crowd. She sighed. "It's such a shame it didn't snow today."By the way, Luther, has it snowed here in past years?"Irina had not spent Christmas in her hometown for many years. The snow she remembered was from her high school days.Luther replied, "I don't know.""You don't know? Weren't you home?""No, I went to Sterling City."Irina was shocked. "To Sterling City? For work?"Irina was only asking out of curiosity. At that point, Luther stopped walking and looked down at Irina, whose cheeks were slightly red from the cold."To see you."Irina fell silent."Last Christmas, you spent it with Uriah at the college with the international students he was mentoring. The year before, he probably wasn't home, so you went to the convenience stor

Irina had never imagined she would find herself in such an awkward situation. She did not want to embarrass anyone, but things had come to this point, so she could only keep up the act."Luther, you should head back. Uriah probably has something to discuss with me.""Alright, then. I'll come pick you up from work tonight." As Luther spoke, he raised his hand and caressed Irina's cheek. The gesture looked incredibly familiar, intimate to a degree that made it seem like they had been dating for a long time. After nodding at Uriah in greeting, Luther got in his car and left.Only after the car had driven far away did Irina turn to face Uriah with a cold expression. She asked, "What do you want now? Wouldn't it be better if we both just moved on? Why do you have to keep interfering with my life?""Irina, I resigned. I've decided to work in Lakewood City." Uriah did not get angry at Irina's attitude. Instead, he smiled and stepped forward.Irritated, Irina tossed the bouquet aside, no

Irina searched through her memory several times, but she just could not remember when or where she had met Luther. If he said he had a crush on her, they must have met before. When Luther heard the question, he scoffed. "Yeah, we've met.""Where? When?" Irina pressed."I think light gray works well. It looks sophisticated. What do you think?"It was obvious Luther had no intention of answering her question. Since he did not want to say it, Irina dropped the matter."Alright, I'll send the revised plans to your phone."Just then, Irina's phone rang.It was Racheal.Though she did not want to answer, she had to. The moment the call connected, Racheal eagerly asked about the situation."Irina, did you meet him? How did it go? Luther is a great guy. He has a good character, is handsome, and makes good money. If you marry him, you'll be set for life."Her phone's speaker was so loud that Luther could hear everything clearly, and he could not help but smile.Irina was smiling too,
