Chapter 2

Author: Muskmelon
But Olivia and I were already damaged beyond repair. I didn't want to stay tangled up with her anymore.

"Fine. I'm cold-hearted." I nodded calmly. "I'll leave right now and stop getting in his way."

With that, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door.

As I passed Olivia, she suddenly reached out and grabbed my arm, her voice cold and ruthless.

"Patrick, that's enough. Apologize to Shawn right now, and I'll pretend none of this ever happened. Otherwise—"

I cut her off with a mocking laugh.

"Otherwise, what? Otherwise, I'll never get the chance to come crawling back to you? You want me to apologize to him? Is he even worth it?"

Olivia's face went completely dark, her tone dripping with warning.

"Patrick, I'm done playing around. I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Shawn right now, or don't blame me for turning on you."

Before the standoff could go any further, Shawn gently tugged on Olivia's wrist, putting on a considerate act.

"Olivia, don't be mad at Patrick. He didn't do anything wrong. It's my fault… I'm the one who should leave…"

The second Olivia saw his pitiful face, she immediately let go of me and turned to comfort him.

Seeing my chance, I pulled my suitcase behind me and walked out without looking back.

Just as I was about to step through the door, Olivia's icy voice rang out loud and clear behind me.

"Patrick, if you walk out that door today, don't you ever think about coming back. Let's see what kind of life a worthless piece of trash like you can have without me."

I still stopped in my tracks and turned around.

Not because I was having second thoughts. Not because I regretted my decision.

I just wanted one last look at the girl I once loved so deeply—to see with my own eyes how ugly her face had become.

And after I saw it, I walked away without a single look back.

Olivia had once been the woman I could never reach—the center of every decision I ever made.

She was always the untouchable heiress of the Ranch family, while I was nothing more than someone insignificant, buried in the dust beneath her feet.

We met in college, though at first our lives barely overlapped.

Every day, I quietly followed in her footsteps—attending the same classes, eating at the same spots, even walking the same routes after school.

Eventually, just to see her more often, I pushed myself relentlessly and transferred into her department.

Before today, the thing I was most grateful for was that decision to switch majors.

Because that one choice changed everything between us.

At the time, our professor announced that anyone who didn't want to fail the final exam had to form teams and run experimental data together.

I had always been one of the top students in the class.

Olivia turned down everyone else who approached her and took the initiative to ask me to be her partner.

I still remember how thrilled I was back then.

The moment I looked at her beautiful face, my heart started racing. My cheeks burned so hot I could've fried an egg on them.

Resting her chin in her hand, Olivia looked at me with amusement in her eyes and teased lightly, "Patrick, if you keep staring at me like that, class is going to be over soon."

The whole classroom burst into laughter.

I snapped back to reality and dropped my head, so embarrassed I wanted the floor to swallow me up.

But Olivia hadn't meant to make fun of me.

"All right, stop laughing," she said with a smile. "Being partnered with Patrick is my honor."

That was how we gradually grew closer and closer.

In the end, Olivia was even the one who confessed to me first.

We had three and a half wonderful years together in college.

To everyone around us, we were the golden couple—the one everyone envied.

But even while we were dating, I never let my studies slide.

I kept my full scholarship the entire time, and after graduation, I even received an offer from a world-renowned international corporation.

But Olivia was the only daughter of the Ranch family. She had no choice but to go home and take over the family business.

When I saw the sadness in her eyes at the thought of us being apart, I turned down the kind of opportunity most people spend their whole lives chasing—without a second thought.

I joined the Ranch Group with her instead, doing everything I could to help her establish herself in the company.

To keep anyone from saying I was riding on her coattails, I deliberately started from the very bottom.

As time went on, our relationship grew more and more solid. Eventually, I felt the timing was right and proposed.

But no matter how many times I asked, she always said no.

Whenever I pressed her for a reason, she just gave me vague excuses.

It was only later that I found out Shawn was already by her side by then.

Just before I was about to leave, I received an unexpected phone call."Mr. Ranch?""Patrick, no need to be so formal. Just call me Richard." Richard's voice had lost the sharp edge it once carried.I glanced at Olivia and replied flatly, "We're not that close. 'Mr. Ranch' is more appropriate and respectful."Hearing my response, Olivia clenched her white dress tightly.Catching her small movement from the corner of my eye, I kept my expression blank and continued calmly, "If you have something to say, Mr. Ranch, just say it directly."A long silence followed on the other end of the line. Then came a heavy sigh."Patrick… if I apologized to you right now, would you be willing to give Olivia another chance?"I started to speak, but he cut me off."Don't rush to say no. Hear me out first."You've been with Olivia for years. I admit I never thought highly of you in the past, but I also never interfered in your relationship. Olivia has been spoiled since she was a child, and I a

I downed the drink in one gulp and quickly changed the subject."Let's talk about something else. Don't make our campus queen uncomfortable."A few people who already knew we had broken up immediately picked up on the awkward vibe. They laughed it off and helped steer the conversation elsewhere. But a few others—guys who had once chased after Olivia and didn't know the full story—kept pushing us to play couple games together.Seeing that I had put down my glass and refused to join, Olivia stepped in to smooth things over."Patrick's had a bit too much to drink tonight. Let's skip the games. We can just talk."Even then, the crowd wouldn't let it go.Under their constant pressure, Olivia eventually walked over to me.Someone in the crowd gave her a playful shove, and she stumbled right into my arms.Instinctively, I jolted upright. But she reacted even faster—wrapping her arms around my neck. Her eyes locked onto mine, silently begging for help. Our classmates erupted into c

I hadn't been keeping up with the Ranch Group's situation, but I still caught the latest news about it on TV.In order to appease the furious Renesas Group, the Ranch Group paid a massive penalty for breach of contract. To cut costs, they were forced to lay off a large number of senior employees. For a while, resentment ran high within the company, and negative press about the Ranch Group spread like a tidal wave.If not for the Ranch family's deep roots, the company might have collapsed entirely during that crisis.I felt nothing about it. Everything that happened was just Olivia reaping what she sowed.Once I had rested enough and decided to pursue further studies abroad, the Renesas Group somehow got hold of my number. A senior executive personally called me, extending an olive branch.I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted. But knowing that joining the Renesas Group might mean crossing paths with Olivia again someday, I ultimately declined the CEO's offer.Instead, I reach

"You asked to see me? Let's get straight to the point," I said."Given that the Ranch Group's stock has taken a sharp nosedive, I assume you're aware of that, Patrick. The reason I invited you here today is simple—I want you to marry my daughter as soon as possible."As soon as he finished speaking, Richard covered his mouth and coughed violently.Though he looked weak, his tone left no room for argument.A caregiver stepped forward and gently patted his back.Olivia tried to move closer, but hesitated. Her eyes instinctively turned to me, silently begging for help.I looked away without a trace and said calmly, "Is this because the Renesas Group is putting pressure on the Ranch Group?"The Renesas Group was the leading corporation that had specifically chosen to work with me—solely because of my abilities.Richard finally managed to stop coughing. "Patrick, you're a smart man."I laughed. At that moment, everything became clear. The Ranch Group was weaker than the Renesas G

Olivia quickly calmed down. She pressed closer, wrapping her arms around my waist. "Patrick, stop being sarcastic. I know I messed up—I really do. I even chased you all the way out here. Can't you see how much I love you?"I looked down at her in silence for a moment. Her love? No. Olivia, the eldest daughter of the Ranch family, had always been someone everyone adored and indulged. It was my constant refusal that had stirred up her desire to win me over. But the moment she succeeded, I would instantly become boring and disposable to her."Your husband is watching you right now. Don't you think you should go comfort him instead? Is it really appropriate to leave your husband looking so brokenhearted?"Olivia suddenly turned her head.Just then, Shawn stepped forward and hugged her."Olivia, don't go with him. Let's go home, okay?"I kept going, my voice sharp as a knife. "Olivia, stop doing things that make me lose respect for you. Once you've made your choice, there's no goin

Once again, I was blocked by Olivia's bodyguards and forced to stop. I turned around and looked at her.Olivia grabbed my arm and spoke in a wounded tone. "Patrick, how could you do this to me? I thought we were on the same page."Just then, Shawn walked over.Seeing us locked in a tug-of-war, he asked cautiously, "Olivia… I don't feel well. Can you stay with me for a bit?"Olivia didn't even glance at him. Instead, she looked at me with eyes full of hope."Patrick, stop being difficult, okay? And don't be mad at me anymore, alright?"The whole room went silent. Everyone around us had their phones out, recording like crazy.Out of whatever little decency I had left, I even gave her a warning. But she acted like she didn't hear a word and still refused to let go.Something inside me snapped.I let out a sneer. "Olivia, I still have some self-respect left—even if you don't. You're the one who dumped me and married someone else. You're the one who let me go and told me to move on
