Everyone left the room as though staying there with me for another second might suffocate them. I remained beside the dusty window while staring at the closed door.
Luther's footsteps stopped midway, he looked back at me one final time. “Stay here tonight, Ciara.”
I raised my brows.
“No one in the royal family wants to see you. Do not come downstairs. Do not let anyone see you.” His voice was cold.
I almost smiled.
Of course they didn't want me to join the festivities. Why would they? To them, I was the murderer who had killed their one and only daughter.
The criminal who had ruined Prince Thomas's life.
I lowered my gaze without any disappointment. “Don't worry.” My voice was calm as I mocked him. “I have become very good at hiding, right brother?”
Something flickered across Luther's face, but he quickly turned away. The door closed and I was alone again.
I walked toward the window. From there, I could see the long driveway and front yard of the Laurent estate.
The moment I saw Prince Thomas again, every single memory of our relationship came rushing back.
And then it happened.
Pain exploded through my chest as I gasped holding the window sill. My knees nearly buckled as I felt Thomas’s sharp hatred overlapped with the mate bond.
It had never disappeared.
It slammed into me with such force that I couldn't breathe. For five years, my wolf had been silent but now she yelled in my head.
Mate.
The word echoed through my mind as I crouched and tried to breathe in between. “No.” I whispered with my hand flew to my chest. “Don't.”
But my wolf didn't listen.
She recognized him even after five years, even after his rejection. I saw Thomas's expression change when our eyes locked with each other. I couldn't understand what he felt, maybe he was disgusted.
I stepped away from the window immediately. My back pressed against the wall, I couldn't breathe. My wolf was still pacing inside me, restless and confused. But now she had awakened because of him.
I hated her for it.
I hated the Moon Goddess for it. Most of all, I hated myself for a tiny part of my heart knew he still affected me.
I remained hidden until the sounds of celebration grew louder downstairs.
Eventually, hunger became stronger than any other emotion, I hadn't eaten properly since yesterday’s soup that is more like dirty water.
When I heard the servants moving toward the banquet hall, I quietly slipped from my room. I kept my head lowered as I made my way toward the kitchen. Nobody seemed to notice me, perhaps that was what I had become.
Invisible.
The kitchen was overflowing with activity. Servants rushed between counters carrying roasted meat, bread, fruit, and desserts on silver trays. I stood near the doorway, uncertain.
For a moment, I felt like a piece of unwanted furniture someone had forgotten to remove. But I knew exactly where everything belonged.
This kitchen has been my favorite place in the Laurent estate.
Before Alicent returned.
Before everything changed.
I was still looking around engrossed in the remnants of my memory when a familiar voice called me out. “Ciara? Dear, is that you?”
I froze.
My nanny stood at the opposite end of the kitchen, her hands slowly rose to her mouth as her eyes widened.
Then tears filled them. “My goodness…” She hurried toward me. I barely had time to react before she wrapped her arms around me. “Ciara, my dear!”
Her embrace was warm.
For one heartbeat, I felt I was eight years old again.
I could hear her almost crying happily to see me, when she kissed my cheek and I flinched violently. My entire body reacted before my mind could stop it and I stumbled backward.
Her smile disappeared as she stared at me as if she had figured out something about me. Then her gaze moved toward my cheek.
The patch.
The faint scars visible around the edges.
Her face crumpled. “Oh, child…” Her fingers trembled as she reached toward my face but stopped before touching me. “Oh my dear, child. What happened to you?”
I looked away. “Nothing.”
“Nothing?” Her voice broke. “Ciara, your face…” She swallowed hard as she tried to touch my cheek. “They did this to you in prison? Who? Why would they hurt you? You are already suffering so much!”
I couldn't answer.
She didn't need one to understand my pain, her eyes filled with tears. I suddenly felt ashamed because she was looking at them with pity.
I thought I could learn to hide my face, to hide my pain. But seeing my nanny cry almost broke all the walls I had built.
“It doesn't hurt anymore.”
The lie came automatically.
Her lips trembled. I looked at her and she wiped her tears quickly. Holding my hands tightly she whispered again. “Wait here. I’ll bring something for you to eat.”
She disappeared behind the kitchen doors. While I waited, I slipped outside through the servants' entrance.
Someone was standing beneath the stone archway.
His head was down, but I recognized him anywhere.
My heart raced and my wolf was stirring.
Thomas stood with his hands behind his back, his expression unreadable. His gaze moved over me and then stopped on my face.
“What happened in prison?”
I stared at him.
(Ciara POV)The screams. The memories I had spent years trying to bury. I could feel the restraints around my wrists again. Whatever happened in the hall had triggered those nightmares.I could hear the guards.I could feel the pain.My breathing became frantic while I was crouching on the floor holding my chest. “No...”I tried to move.I couldn't.“Please...”The first blow struck my shoulder. I screamed. Another hit landed against my back and I fell. My hands scraped against the floor as I tried to crawl away. “Please!”The word tore from my throat. “Please stop!”The figure laughed and I covered my head. The blows continued then someone grabbed my hair and forced my face upward.“You're a murderer.”I shook my head. “No.”“You killed her.”“No!”“I didn't!”The nightmare tightened around me and my wolf yelled in my head, she used her dormant powers to calm my trauma. My vision became blurry and eventually blackened out.My body fell on the floor with a thud, I didn't faint but I
(Ciara POV)I hadn’t figured out what to do when the guards seized me. Someone brought a stretcher and I was shoved onto it. “No! I said no!” I kept on shouting, struggling to move free from their grasps when the doctor tied the straps.I was made to kneel on the stretcher on my fours like a broodmare. “Assist the doctor in examination.” the queen demanded making other guards walk towards me. One of them pulled my body upwards from my tummy.Horror clouded my senses.I couldn’t move and instinctively looked at Thomas. My eyes pleaded to him. Say something Thomas… But he said nothing and instead stood there with his head sideways. I didn't matter to him anymore, not even as a person.Alicent has a victorious grin over her face.“Proceed with the exam.” The queen ordered.“No! I said no! Leave me alone.” I shouted, struggling. Alicent wanted to hear my screams, that's why she didn't cover my mouth instead tied my hands. “Please miss, don't move too much else you'll hurt yourself.”
(Ciara POV)From that moment forward, Alicent deliberately made me attend to her every need. She made me carry her clothes, prepare her baths and arrange her jewelry for the wedding. Alicent reduced me to the point of being her maid like others. I cleaned her room, fetched her warm food which she threw on the floor. She made me stand beside her during fittings of her wedding gowns. “How does it look? I think the neckline isn’t deep enough to catch Thomas’s attention.” Alicent tried to get a reaction from me. Sometimes she would drop something simply so I would have to bend down and retrieve it. Sometimes she would spill food on her dress and blame me for not being careful. Thomas saw all of it but he said nothing. It wasn’t like I had any expectations from him, I knew he wouldn’t protect me. My nanny was still under Alicent's control. And now I had Mia to think about too. The little girl had become my friend far more quickly than I had expected. She worked in the kitchen, and wh
(Ciara POV)I watched Thomas and Alicent get into the car together. His hand was wrapped around hers in a simple gesture. Yet somehow, it hurt more than I had expected.I stood among the servants and guards gathered outside, my hands hanging uselessly at my sides as he climbed into the carriage with Alicent. For one foolish moment, my eyes remained fixed on Thomas. His face was turned away from me and he didn't look back. I told myself that was what I wanted. After all, I had told him to leave me alone.Yet watching him leave with Alicent still felt like something was being torn out of my chest. The car door closed and just before the vehicle pulled away, Alicent turned her head and looked back at me.A silent message which made my fingers curl slowly into my palms.Know your place. She was leaving this place beside the man who had once been mine. I lowered my eyes, I had no intention of fighting her. Not anymore.A few moments later, I noticed Luther's eyes met mine, he hesitated be
(Thomas POV)The walls seemed to shrink around me with the grim silence. I couldn’t believe the woman standing in front of me was my ex-mate, Ciara.I could barely recognise her. I stared at the crates stacked against the wall and the piles of shredded clothing scattered across the floor. For several heartbeats, I could not understand what I was looking at. My mind refused to connect the pieces. Then I saw it.A small handkerchief lay on top of one of the crates. My breath stopped as I recognised it and rage coursed through my veins. The delicate embroidery along its edge was unmistakable. It was my sister's.In Ciara's room. In pieces. My eyes slowly moved toward her and I couldn’t believe Ciara actually treated my sister’s memory like this. She stood several feet away, watching me with an expression I could not read."Tell me this isn't you." My voice sounded foreign even to me.Ciara said nothing. That silence hurt more than any confession could have. It hurt more than five yea
[Ciara’s pov]Alicent stepped pompously into the room, her gaze traveling between my nanny and me with open disgust. The old woman immediately moved closer to my side cautiously. Alicent noticed her presence. She knew at once what it meant for me and it amused her. Her lips curled into a cruel smile. “How touching.” She turned toward the guards standing behind her. “Seize the crone.”My heart lurched, I couldn't breathe. I knew exactly what Alicent was capable of, and the fact that she had brought guards with her meant that she hadn't come merely to torment me with words. Two guards stepped forward and grabbed my nanny by the arms. “No!” I rushed toward them, but one of the guards blocked my path. “Leave her alone, Alicent! She has done no harm to you.”My nanny struggled weakly. “Miss Ciara! Please don’t.” I turned toward Alicent. “Why can't you leave me alone?” My voice trembled with fury. “Aren't you afraid Thomas will realize the truth one day?”I hated that she could still mak
