Chapter 3

Author: Nightless Peace
Lily's emotions erupted at that point.

"You piece of trash! Have you forgotten your promise to me and my mother?!" Lily's voice was hoarse as she shouted at the top of her lungs.

Suddenly, thunder roared outside.

Her face turned pale, and she ran out in a hurry as she mumbled, "Mom, I'm coming to save you. Wait for me. I'll be there soon."

She ran round and round the hospital grounds.

Rain fell on her face, but it hurt so much that she kept crying.

Then, she saw several people holding shovels and filling in a pit. Half of a black bag was protruding from the ground.

Without even thinking, she ran over. "Step aside!"

She lunged at the bag. The zipper had not been fully pulled up, and her mother's pale face was revealed right before her eyes. Despair and overwhelming distress filled her heart.

Lily fell on the ground and brushed the dirt from her mother's body bit by bit. The rain fell harder, and her cries grew louder. "I'm sorry, Mom. I really am."

Her mother had taken care of her like she was a princess, but her mother had been subjected to such humiliation even after her death. It was all her fault.

Rain soaked her.

All she could think about were Shaun's words. As she held her mother's dead body to her, she said firmly, "Let's go, Mom. We're leaving and never coming back here again. I don't want to be with Shaun anymore."

After Lily finished making arrangements for her mother, she went to the bank and retrieve a divorce agreement from her safe deposit box.

After signing her name on it, she went to the City Hall to have it processed.

"Once you're over the thirty-day cool-down period, you'll have completed the process. You don't need to come personally to get the divorce certificate, if you don't want to," the clerk said.

"Alright."

Shaun had given her the divorce agreement as a show of his sincerity. He had already signed it and told her that if he ever mistreated her, she could sign her name and leave.

He might have forgotten about it, but she had not.

When Lily returned to the villa, it was the next night.

She opened the door and dragged herself in.

Upon seeing her, Shaun rushed over to hug her. "Lily, where did you go? Why didn't you answer my calls?

"I know I was wrong this time, but Ninian saved my life, and I promised her that I won't meddle in this. Don't be mad at me, okay?"

Lily stared numbly at the clock hanging in the living room. "What else do you have to say?"

"Ninian grew up in the mountains and lost her parents. She's an orphan, so please be more understanding toward her."

"You want me to be more understanding, but who's going to do the same for me?!" She shoved Shaun away.

Who would understand her dead mother?

Her mother could have been saved. She had been in the operating theater already. The equipment was made to save lives, so why had her mother been denied access to them?

Suddenly, a few bodyguards appeared inside the villa.

Ninian walked down the stairs slowly. "Pin her against the wall with the rules I wrote."

Lily frowned at them. "What are you doing?"

"Those who break the rules need to be punished. You used more than you were allowed to. Obviously, you need to be punished." Ninian carried a long whip.

Lily was pinned against the wall. When she turned to face Shaun, all she saw was pity in his eyes, but he had no intention of stopping this.

Lewis lowered his head, at a loss for words. Then, he looked up and met Lily's eyes. ”Could you… not leave?”Lily was amused by his reaction, and she smiled. ”Do you like me, Lewis?””Yes! I like you a lot. I've liked you ever since I saved you. I like your resilience, your kindness, and your courage. ”But I never had the courage to tell you how I felt. I was afraid that if I confessed, you'd leave me, and we wouldn't even be able to remain friends.”Lily stared into his eyes. ”Lewis, you're a good person. We've spent so much time together these past few days. When I fell into that hole yesterday, you were the first person I thought of. I think I like you too.”The dejection in Lewis's eyes vanished. He hugged Lily tightly, as though she were the most precious treasure in the world. They were just one door apart. One man was delighted, while the other was devastated. After the accident, Shaun decided to leave and return to the country. Before he left, he went to visit Li

”He went back,” Lewis said hesitantly. ”Don't lie to me, Lewis. I know that he saved me.”Lily heard everything in her semi-unconscious state. Lewis did not hide it from her. After taking her to the hospital, he immediately joined the others in returning to rescue Shaun.By then, Shaun was heavily injured and was lying in a pool of his own blood. He had been sent to the emergency room. After more than ten hours, Shaun was finally out of danger. However, he had not woken up. The doctor had warned them that he might never wake up if he remained trapped in his unconscious state for too long. Lily's heart sank. ”Let me see him.”This time, when she met him, she held no love for him, only gratitude. She could no longer accept Shaun in her life, but she was not going to forget the fact that he saved her. When Lily walked into his ward, Shaun was still unconscious. He had an oxygen mask on, and his pale face was pale and completely drained of color. ”Aren't you supposed

Shaun had no way to carry her out by himself.”Somebody, help!”At that moment, he heard a familiar voice calling out for Lily. ”We're here! Down here!”Someone suddenly appeared at the edge of the hole. It was Lewis.”Lily fainted! Get her out of here! Take her somewhere safe!””What about you?”Shaun could feel the pain in his ankle. ”I don't think I can get out, but I don't want anything happening to Lily.”With the last bit of his strength, he lifted Lily, and Lewis grabbed her. The rain grew even heavier, and Shaun felt himself grow weaker. He had only just recovered from his fever, but he did not think he could make it this time. ”Shaun!”Lewis was not in a hurry to leave. ”We'll leave together. I'll get both of you out.”Rainwater trickled down Shaun's face, and a drop rested on the tip of his nose. He gave Lewis a bitter smile and shook his head. ”I can hang on for a little longer. Leave with her first. Lily doesn't seem to be in good condition. ”I did plen

Shaun stayed in the disaster prevention center. He went door to door to deliver supplies. Whenever he reached Lily's house, he would light up a cigarette and stand outside for a long time. He had not seen her over the past few days, but it was enough for him just to be able to see her from a distance. The typhoon arrived two days later than predicted, descending upon Pravance without warning on what had been an otherwise peaceful day.Everyone hurried back inside their homes to avoid the disaster. Shaun stared at the dark sky. The rain grew heavier by the second. Within moments, the downpour became so dense that it looked as though countless threads stretched from the heavens to the earth. All he could think about was Lily.Would Lily be scared because of the horrible weather? She had always been timid. He remembered how, in the past, even the rumble of thunder was enough to make her hide in his arms, covering her ears as she clung to him. But it had been a long time sinc

Standing behind her was his eighteen-year-old self. He was holding a bouquet of flowers and looking at her with pity.”Don't forgive him. Just keep moving forward.”When Shaun's fever broke, he felt lighter, but the fleeting dream had affected him greatly. He simply could not let Lily go. He did not want to lose her, even if she already had someone new by her side and no longer loved him.All he wanted was just for her to be beside him again. At that moment, he came to a stark realization.Lily had hated Ninian the most. If he made everything clear to her, she would definitely have a change of heart. He refused to believe that she had really married that man.Shaun returned to the fragrance shop and saw Lily taking a nap in her chair, even though she was usually busy. The wind blew through her hair, and the sunlight made her side profile look even gentler.Shaun's heart skipped a beat. The wind chimes woke her up. When she saw him, she frowned. ”Have I not made myself cle

”What the hell are you doing?!”Lewis lifted his fist. ”Hit you! Didn't I tell you to stop bothering her? You're the one who drove her away. How do you have the nerve to make her life difficult again?!”Shaun did not back down this time. He threw himself into a fight with Lewis. They hit each other. Since they were about similar height and size, they were tied.”What are you doing?!” Lily shouted, and the two men stopped fighting momentarily.Shaun looked up and saw Lily's familiar face. ”Lily…””Let go of Lewis!” Her angry voice made Shaun stop. A part of Lewis' face was swollen, but he shielded Lily with resolve. ”Don't touch her. Don't harass her again, or I'll beat you up the moment you appear here.”Shaun gritted his teeth. ”Who the hell do you think you are?!””Mr. Stone, I don't think you have the right to ask that here,” said Lily. ”I told you to leave me alone, but you keep harassing me. I don't want anything from you. ”Your love is worth nothing anymore. We'r
