---

The world explodes.

Not with fire. Not with sound. With light. Pure, blinding, white-hot light that pours out of me like I'm a goddamn supernova. I feel it tearing through the cabin, through the walls, through the trees, through the veil itself. It's like I've become the sun and everything around me is burning.

I can't stop it.

I don't want to stop it.

For the first time in two lifetimes, I feel powerful. Not scared. Not helpless. Not some abandoned wife dying on a pharmacy floor. Powerful. Fucking powerful.

The light fades. I collapse to my knees. My body is shaking. My hands are trembling. But I'm alive. I'm still fucking alive.

And when I open my eyes, I see the cabin.

Or what's left of it.

The walls are gone. The roof is gone. There's nothing but a circle of scorched earth around me, stretching out in every direction. The trees at the edge of the clearing are blackened and bent, their leaves turned to ash.

Sera is staring at me. Her face is pale. Her mouth is hanging open.

"What the fuck was that?" she whispers.

"I don't know," I gasp. "I don't—"

I look down at my hands.

The scar on my palm is gone.

Not faded. Not healing. Just... gone. Like it was never there. Like my grandmother's legacy, my mother's pain, my own death—all of it—just disappeared in a flash of light.

I feel a hand on my shoulder. It's Helena. She's kneeling beside me, her eyes wide.

"Elara," she says. "Are you okay?"

"I think so." I look at her. "What happened? What did I do?"

She shakes her head. "I've never seen anything like it. Your power—it's not just strong. It's something else. Something different."

"We need to get out of here," Damon says. He's already moving, grabbing supplies, loading weapons. "That blast lit up the whole area. They'll be coming. All of them."

I try to stand. My legs buckle. Helena catches me.

"Easy," she says. "You need rest."

"I don't have time to rest."

"You don't have a choice."

She forces me to sit down. I'm too weak to argue. Too weak to do anything except sit there and let the world spin around me.

Sera moves fast. She's already packing the essentials—food, water, medical supplies, ammunition. Her hands are steady. Her movements are precise. She's done this before. Many times.

"We need to move," Sera says. "Now."

"Where?" Cutter asks.

"There's a church about ten miles from here," she says. "Abandoned. Off the grid. The Collective doesn't know about it. We can regroup there."

"What about Mira?" I ask. "Where is she?"

"I'm here," a small voice says.

I turn. Mira is standing in the corner. Her face is pale. Her hands are trembling. But she's alive. She's okay.

"Come here," I say.

She walks over to me. I pull her into a hug.

"I'm okay," I tell her. "I'm not going anywhere."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

---

They move fast.

Fifteen minutes later, we're packed and moving. Sera leads the way through the trees. Helena is right beside her. Damon and Cutter flank me, ready to fight. I'm too weak to walk on my own, so Damon supports me on one side while Cutter limps along on the other.

The forest is dark. The veil is thicker here. I can feel it pressing down on me, heavy and cold. But it's different now. Before, I was afraid of it. Now, I feel connected to it. Like it's part of me.

We walk for hours. I lose track of time. My body aches, my head pounds, but I keep moving. One foot in front of the other. That's all I can do.

"How much further?" I ask.

"About a mile," Sera says. "Keep moving."

"We can't stop," Helena says. "They're right behind us."

"How do you know?"

She points to the sky. The veil is thicker now, darker, like a storm cloud that's about to swallow the sun.

"They're using it," she says. "The veil. They can see through it. Track us."

"Then we need to move faster."

I force myself to walk faster. Damon tightens his grip on me. Cutter grunts with effort. We're all hurting. But we can't stop. We can't.

Finally, Sera stops.

"We're here," she says.

I look up. There's a building in front of us. An old church, its steeple half-collapsed, its windows shattered. It looks abandoned. Forgotten.

"This is it?" Mira asks.

"This is it," Sera says. "Come on."

---

The church is empty. Pews overturned. Stained glass smashed. Floor covered in dust and debris. But there's a door at the back that leads to a staircase. Down. Into the basement.

The basement is huge. Converted into a living space. A bed, a table, a bookshelf filled with old tomes and journals. There's a fireplace. A wood-burning stove. Supplies stacked in the corners.

"Get her to the bed," Sera says.

Damon guides me to the bed. I collapse onto it, exhausted beyond words.

"Rest," Sera says. "You've earned it."

"Can't rest," I mutter. "World's ending."

"It'll still be ending tomorrow," she says. "Rest."

---

The next morning, I wake up before dawn.

My body still aches, but I feel stronger. Ready. I sit up and look around. Everyone is asleep. Helena is curled up in a corner. Cutter is snoring on the floor. Mira is tucked under a blanket. Damon is sitting by the door, his rifle across his lap, his eyes fixed on the entrance.

"Can't sleep?" I ask.

"Never do," he says. "Too much to think about."

"Like what?"

He's quiet for a moment. "About what happens next. If we survive."

I walk over to him. Sit down beside him.

"What do you think happens next?" I ask.

"I don't know," he says. "I've been fighting this war for so long, I've forgotten what it's like to think about the future."

"Then think about it now."

He's quiet for a long moment.

"I want to live," he says. "I want to see the world after it's over. I want to build something. Something that lasts."

"With me?"

He turns to look at me. His grey eyes meet mine.

"Yes," he says. "With you."

I don't know what to say. So I just lean into him. His arm wraps around me. Warm. Safe.

"We'll survive," I say. "I promise."

---

Sera finds us in the morning.

"The Collective is coming," she says. "They know where we are. We have maybe a few hours."

"Then we fight," I say.

She nods. "We fight. But not here. They've got us surrounded. We need to break through their lines and get to their facility."

"Their facility?"

"The place where they're keeping the other Receptors," she says. "The place where they're planning to use the veil to reshape the world. If we can get there, we can stop them."

I look at the map. At the facility.

"Then let's go."

---

We move as a unit.

Helena and Damon take point, their weapons ready. Cutter and Mira are in the middle. Sera and I are at the rear. I can feel the veil pressing down on me, heavy and cold. But I'm not afraid.

I'm ready.

The Collective attacks at dawn.

They come out of the mist like wraiths—black uniforms, black guns, black hearts. There are dozens of them. Maybe more.

We fight.

Damon fires. Helena fires. Cutter fires. I feel the power rising inside me, hot and bright, and I let it go.

The energy explodes out of me like a wave. The soldiers are thrown back, their bodies crumpling like paper. I keep moving. Keep fighting.

And then I see it.

The facility. Rising out of the mist like a tombstone.

"We're almost there," Sera shouts. "Keep moving."

I run toward it. The power is surging inside me, and I feel it calling—something within the facility, something dark and hungry. My grandmother's energy. My mother's. All the Receptors the Collective has captured.

I feel it all.

And I run faster.

The doors are open. The facility is waiting.

And I'm ready to burn it all down.

I run through the doors. The facility swallows me whole. And then I see them—rows and rows of glass chambers. Bodies inside. Receptors. Prisoners. Some alive. Some dead. And in the center of it all, a massive machine connected to the veil itself. Dr. Rosen is standing beside it. Smiling. "Welcome, Elara. We've been waiting for you."

I feel my power surge. Not with fear. With rage. "Let them go. Now."

He laughs. "Or what? You'll destroy everything? Go ahead. I'd love to see you try."

I raise my hand.

And everything goes to hell.

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Battle Within

---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Possession

---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not

---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. Not fear of wh

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Final Preparation

---The darkness is spreading.I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. Something that's been waiting for this moment for millennia. Kael is out there. Wounded but alive. And he's coming back. The clock is ticking.I feel a presence beside me. It's Julian. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. Three days to prepare. Three days to plan. Three days to figure out how to stop a man who's been poss

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Collective's Ghost

Three days until everything we've built, everyone we've saved, everything we've fought for—it all comes crashing down.I stand in the main chamber of the bunker, staring at the map on the wall. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep."The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous.""How do we stop it?" I ask."By cutting off the connection," he says. "If we can sever the link between Kael and the ancient threat, he'll lose his power. He'll just be a man. A broken, desperate man.""And how do we sever the l

We all made it.Damon appears beside me. His hand finds mine."We did it," he says. "We actually did it.""Don't sound so surprised.""I'm always surprised when we survive," he says. "It's a habit."I almost smile. Almost."How many did we lose?" I ask.He hesitates. "Seven. All of them Zara's people. She's taking it hard.""She's not the only one."I look around the chamber. At the faces of the survivors. At the hope and fear in their eyes. At the weight of everything we've been through."We need to keep moving," I say. "We can't stay here forever.""I know.
