---

The old train station is exactly what I expect.

Abandoned. Broken. The windows are shattered like broken teeth. Graffiti covers every surface—tags and symbols and words I don't understand. Rain drips through holes in the roof, pooling on the cracked floor.

It smells like mold and decay and something else.

Something metallic.

Like blood.

I step inside. My footsteps echo off the walls. The main hall is huge and empty and dark, and I feel like I'm walking into a trap.

"Hello?" I call out.

No answer.

I keep walking.

The train tracks are visible through a gap in the floor. Rusted. Abandoned. The whole place feels like a graveyard.

"Anyone here?"

A figure steps out of the shadows.

She's tall. Skinny. Dressed in all black. Her hair is short and dark and uneven—like she cut it herself. Her eyes are sharp. Intelligent. Watching me like she's already figured out everything I'm going to say.

"You came," she says. Her voice is low. Rough. Like she's been screaming.

"I don't know who you are," I say.

"No. You don't."

"Then tell me."

She steps closer. She's younger than I expected. Mid-twenties. But her eyes are old. Old and tired and full of something I recognize.

Sorrow.

"Because you wouldn't believe me," she says. "And I don't have time to convince you."

"Convince me of what?"

She reaches into her pocket. Pulls out a photograph. Old. Faded. The corners are bent like it's been folded and unfolded a thousand times.

She hands it to me.

I take it.

It's a picture of a woman. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. She's wearing a lab coat and smiling at the camera like she's genuinely happy.

My breath catches.

That woman looks exactly like me.

No—that's not right.

That woman is me.

Except she's not. The hair is different. The eyes are a different color. The smile isn't the same. But the face—the bone structure, the jawline, the way the light hits her cheekbones—

That's my face.

"You're wondering why she looks like you," the woman says. "She's your grandmother."

I blink. "I don't have a grandmother."

"Everyone has a grandmother. Even you."

"My mother never talked about her family. She said they were all dead."

The woman smiles. It's a sad smile. The kind of smile that knows something you don't.

"They're not dead. They're waiting for you."

"Waiting for me?"

"Elara—" She steps closer. Her hand rests on my arm. It's warm. "I know you think you're losing your mind. You woke up this morning with memories that aren't yours. With a scar that shouldn't exist. With a feeling like the world is about to end."

I freeze.

"How do you know that?"

"Because it's not the first time," she says. "And it won't be the last."

"The first time for what?"

She pulls out another photograph. Newer. Unfolded. Uncreased.

It shows a city. Completely destroyed. Smoke rising from the rubble. Bodies in the streets.

It looks exactly like the world I died in.

"I've been tracking you," she says. "Watching you. I knew you'd come back. I just didn't know when."

"Come back from what?"

She sighs. Looks at me with those old, tired eyes.

"The veil," she says. "It happens every few thousand years. A cosmic cycle. A wave of energy that washes over the Earth and changes everything. Last time it happened, civilizations rose and fell in a single night."

I blink. "Okay. You're crazy."

"Am I?"

"You're literally telling me the world is going to end because of a cosmic wave."

"I'm telling you the world has ended before," she says. "And it's going to end again. In three days."

In three days.

Those words hit me like a punch to the chest.

She's right. I don't know how, but she's right. Everything she's saying—it's what I felt when I woke up. It's what I saw in that pharmacy. It's what I died in.

She knows.

She actually knows.

"How?" I ask. My voice cracks. "How do you know that?"

"Because I'm like you."

I stare at her. "What does that mean?"

"Receptors," she says. "That's what they call us. People who can sense the veil. People who can channel it."

I look down at my left palm. The scar is glowing. Faintly. Warmly. Like something inside me is waking up.

"Receptors," I repeat.

She nods. "And you're the strongest one I've ever seen."

"You don't know me."

"I know you're going to save the world," she says. "Or destroy it. I haven't figured out which yet."

I laugh. I can't help it. It's such a ridiculous thing to say.

"Great. So I'm either a hero or a villain. That's not a lot of pressure."

She doesn't laugh. She looks at me with those old, tired eyes.

"There are others," she says. "People who know about the veil. People who've been preparing for this for generations."

"Like who?"

"Like your grandmother," she says. "And the people who killed her."

I stagger back. My hands are shaking. My heart is racing.

"They killed my grandmother?"

She nods. "The Collective. They're the ones who know. The ones who've been preparing. And they know you're back, Elara. They know you're alive again."

Her face twists.

"They're coming for you."

"When?"

She looks at me.

"Tonight."

Behind her, a door slams. Footsteps. Heavy. Fast. Men in black uniforms with guns in their hands.

She shoves me. Hard. Toward a gap in the wall.

"Run," she says. "Run and don't look back."

I run.

I hear gunshots behind me.

I

don't know if she's okay.

I don't know if she's alive.

But I know one thing: someone is trying to kill me before the world ends.

And I'm not dying again.

I keep running.

---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Possession

---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Ancient's Whisper

---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. Not fear of wh

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Final Preparation

---The darkness is spreading.I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. Something that's been waiting for this moment for millennia. Kael is out there. Wounded but alive. And he's coming back. The clock is ticking.I feel a presence beside me. It's Julian. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. Three days to prepare. Three days to plan. Three days to figure out how to stop a man who's been poss

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Collective's Ghost

---Three days. That's all we have.Three days until Kael arrives with his army and his ancient darkness and his fucking vendetta against me. Three days until everything we've built, everyone we've saved, everything we've fought for—it all comes crashing down.I stand in the main chamber of the bunker, staring at the map on the wall. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep."The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous.""How do we stop it?" I ask."By cutting off the connection," he says. "If we can sever the link between Kael and the ancient threat, he'll lose his power. He'll just be a man. A broken, desperate man.""And how do we sever the l

The bunker hums around us like a living thing.I stand in the main chamber, watching Zara's people settle in. They're exhausted, battered, broken. But they're alive. They made it. We all made it.Damon appears beside me. His hand finds mine."We did it," he says. "We actually did it.""Don't sound so surprised.""I'm always surprised when we survive," he says. "It's a habit."I almost smile. Almost."How many did we lose?" I ask.He hesitates. "Seven. All of them Zara's people. She's taking it hard.""She's not the only one."I look around the chamber. At the faces of the survivors. At the hope and fear in their eyes. At the weight of everything we've been through."We need to keep moving," I say. "We can't stay here forever.""I know. But we need to rest. Recover. Figure out our next move.""And what about Kael? He's still out there. He's still coming."Damon's jaw tightens. "I know.""Then we need to find him first.""We will. But first, we need to make sure everyone's safe."---Th
