---

I died watching my husband hand our survival supplies to another woman.

That's the first thing I remember when I open my eyes. Not the soft morning light filtering through the curtains. Not the sound of birds outside the window. Not the warmth of his arm draped across my stomach like I still belong to him.

No. I remember the way he looked back at me. Just once. Blank. Empty. Like I was a piece of furniture he'd outgrown. Like five years of marriage meant nothing. Like I was nothing.

He didn't even say goodbye.

He just walked away with Victoria Sterling and her bratty kid, carrying the bag I packed with my own hands, my own money, my own desperate hope that maybe—just maybe—he'd come back for me.

He never came back.

I died three days later in a looted pharmacy, bleeding out from a piece of glass I couldn't even see, alone and cold and so full of hatred that it choked me harder than the dust in my lungs.

And now I'm here.

In this bed. In this body. In this life that isn't supposed to exist anymore.

I turn my head slowly. There he is. Marcus Chen.Senior financial analyst. Sharp jaw. Perfect smile that hides a perfect monster.

The man who let me die.

The man who's about to find out what happens when you underestimate a woman who's already been to hell and back.

His arm is still on me. Heavy. Warm. Familiar in a way that makes my skin crawl.

I slide out of bed so slowly, so carefully, that I feel like a thief in my own life. My feet hit the cold floor. I'm wearing his old t-shirt. I look like a woman who gave up.

I'm not that woman anymore.

I walk to the bathroom on silent feet. Lock the door. Lean against the sink and stare at myself in the mirror.

My eyes are wrong.

They're not the soft, trusting eyes of a woman who believed in love. They're hard. Cold. Fucking deadly. They're the eyes of someone who's already died once and has nothing left to lose.

And there's a scar on my left palm.

It wasn't there before. It's the scar from the disaster—the glass that sliced me open, the infection that swelled my hand like a balloon, the mark that should belong to my other body.

But it's here.

On this hand.

In this life.

I press my thumb into it. It hurts badly. Good... That means I'm not dreaming.

I died but I'm back. And I have three days before everything goes to hell again.

Three days to do what I should have done the first time.

Survive.

And make him pay.

I splash water on my face. I'm not crying. I refuse to fucking cry. I've done enough crying in my life. I've cried for a husband who never loved me. I've cried for a marriage that never existed. I've cried for a future I built entirely on lies.

No more crying.

I hear the bed creak in the other room. He's waking up.

Good.

Let him wake up.

I walk out of the bathroom. He's sitting up now, rubbing his eyes like he's some kind of rom-com hero.

His hair is messy. His shirt is riding up. He's objectively gorgeous and I want to fucking vomit.

"Morning, babe," he says. Voice rough with sleep. "You're up early."

Babe.

He called me babe.

I almost laughed.

"You make coffee yet?" he asks, stretching. His arms go up. His shirt rides higher. He's showing off. He knows he looks good.

I don't care.

"Elara?"

I realize I've been staring at him. Not with love. But with something that makes his smile falter just a little.

"I'll make coffee," I say.

My voice sounds different. Flatter. Colder. Like I'm already dead and this is just my ghost going through the motions.

I walk to the kitchen. His kitchen. The one he always reminded me was his because he got it through his job, his connections, his fucking privilege.

I pour coffee grounds into the machine. My hands are steady. That's good. If my hands shake, he'll notice. And if he notices, he'll ask questions.

And if he asks questions, I might do something stupid.

Like stab him.

No. Stabbing him is too quick. Too clean. I want him to suffer. I want him to watch me walk away. I want him to know what it feels like to be abandoned.

The coffee finishes. I pour two cups. Three sugars for him. Nothing for me.

I bring them to the kitchen table.

He's scrolling through his phone. Emails. Stocks. Crypto. The things that matter to him.

He doesn't even look up.

"Thanks, babe," he says.

Babe.

I sit across from him.

"Hey," I say.

He grunts. Not even a word.

"I want a divorce."

His head snaps up. His eyes—those warm brown eyes that used to make my heart flutter—are wide with shock.

"What?"

"I said I want a divorce."

He laughs. Like I just told him the funniest joke in the world.

"Okay," he says, shaking his head. "Very funny. What's going on? Did you have a bad dream?"

"I had a bad life," I say. "And I'm done with it."

His smile falters. Just a little. Just enough for me to see the first crack in his perfect exterior.

"Elara, what the hell are you talking about?"

"I want a divorce," I repeat. "I'm filing today."

He puts his phone down. slowly and deliberately. Like he's handling a ticking bomb.

"Okay," he says. "You're clearly upset about something. Did I do something wrong?"

Did he do something wrong?

I almost laughed.

He betrayed me. He abandoned me. He left me to die in a collapsed city while he ran off with another woman and her child.

But sure. "Did I do something wrong?"

"You don't love me," I say. "You've never loved me. And I'm done pretending you do."

His face changes. Subtle. Most people wouldn't notice. But I've been studying this man for five years. I know every micro-expression, every shift in his posture, every little tell that says he's about to lie.

And he's about to lie.

"Of course I love you," he says. "Elara, what's this about? Is it work? Because I've been busy lately, but—"

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Don't fucking gaslight me," I say. "I'm not crazy. I'm not hormonal. I'm not having a 'bad dream.' I want a divorce. That's it. That's all."

He stares at me. Silence. He's calculating. Trying to figure out what angle I'm working, what I want, how he can leverage it.

He doesn't believe me.

He thinks this is some kind of power play.

Fine. Let him think that.

"I'll go to the courthouse today," I say. "You can sign the papers, or I can file without you. Either way, this marriage is over."

He leans back. Crosses his arms. Studies me like I'm a problem he's trying to solve.

"Who is it?" he asks.

"Who is what?"

"Who are you fucking?"

His ego. That's what this is about. He can't conceive of me leaving for my own reasons. I must have found someone better. Someone richer. Someone who makes him feel small.

My first instinct is rage. Pure, hot, blinding rage.

But then I realized something.

He's giving me an out.

If I let him believe I cheated, he'll sign the papers in a heartbeat. He won't fight me. He'll be too busy protecting his pride. He'll tell everyone I was a slut, that I broke his heart, that he was the victim all along.

But I'll be free.

"Does it matter?" I ask.

His jaw tightens. "Yeah. It fucking matters."

"Good," I say. "Let it matter."

I stand up. Walk to the bedroom. Pull out a suitcase—one of his old ones, black, big enough for all my things.

He follows me.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"I'm packing."

"You're not leaving."

"Watch me."

He grabs my arm. His grip is too tight. His fingers dig into my skin like he's trying to leave bruises.

In my first life, this didn't happen. In my first life, I was too busy panicking about the disaster to even think about packing. I grabbed my purse, my phone, and my keys. That was it. Everything else was lost.

But here. Now. He's showing me who he really is.

"You're not going anywhere," he says. Voice low and dangerous.

I look him in the eyes. Just like he looked at me when he walked away.

"Let go of my arm," I say. "Or I'll break your fucking nose."

He doesn't let go.

So I break his fucking nose.

I headbutt him. Right in the face. Hard as I can.

He screams.

Blood gushes down his face. He lets go of me and stumbles back, clutching his nose, looking at me like I've lost my mind.

Maybe I have.

But I'm also finally free.

"There's your divorce," I say. "You can use the nosebleed as evidence."

I zip up my suitcase. I walk to the door.

I hear him screaming my name. I hear him yelling about cops, about lawyers, about how I'm going to regret this.

But I'm already gone.

I'm already walking away.

Just like he did.

Only I'm not leaving anyone to die.

The rain hits me the second I step outside. Cold. Hard. Soaking through my clothes in seconds. I don't care. I keep walking.

I don't know where I'm going. I don't know who to call. I don't have a single person in this city who gives a shit about me.

But I know one thing.

The world ends in three days.

And I'm not dying again.

My phone buzzes.

Unknown number.

One message:

"Elara Va

nce. I know what you are. Meet me at the old train station. Come alone."

I stop walking. My heart slams against my ribs.

Who the fuck knows what I am?

I don't even know what I am.

But I'm going to find out.

I type back: "Give me 20 minutes."

And I start running.

---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y

  • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Possession

---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not

---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. ---The darkness is spreading.I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. Something that's been waiting for this moment for millennia. Kael is out there. Wounded but alive. And he's coming back. The clock is ticking.I feel a presence beside me. It's Julian. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. • The Phoenix Before Doomsday    The Collective's Ghost

Three days until everything we've built, everyone we've saved, everything we've fought for—it all comes crashing down.I stand in the main chamber of the bunker, staring at the map on the wall. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep."The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous.""How do we stop it?" I ask."By cutting off the connection," he says. "If we can sever the link between Kael and the ancient threat, he'll lose his power. He'll just be a man. A broken, desperate man.""And how do we sever the l
