Chapter 2

Author: Nicki Posh
As I reflected on everything, a dull ache pulsed in my chest.

I quickly pulled my hand away from Sebastian's grasp. He looked surprised.

I thought about Sebastian's grandfather, Wayne Chesson. Over the years, he hadn't allowed me back into the Chesson residence, but he'd never forced Sebastian to divorce me either.

I figured that I should at least see him before the divorce. So, I nodded and said, "Alright."

But on Wayne's birthday, Sebastian texted me, "Something came up. Just grab a cab to the house."

It was pouring, and cabs were impossible to find. I stood in the rain for an hour. By the time I arrived at the Chesson residence, the other guests were already there.

As soon as I stepped inside, Liam walked over with his signature sneer. He remarked, "You're even late to Mr. Chesson Senior's birthday party. No wonder the Chesson family's never accepted you."

He chuckled, full of malice. "Roxanne showed up early, holding hands with Sebastian, by the way. What a picture-perfect couple. Seriously, how can you even compare?"

So that was why we couldn't leave together. Sebastian had gone to pick up Roxanne.

However, I felt nothing. It was as if I had gone numb.

I ignored Liam and gracefully approached Wayne, wishing him, "Happy birthday."

Sebastian knocked the gift box right out of my hand in irritation. He snapped, "I already got him something."

He probably thought I had brought something cheap and embarrassing.

I calmly picked up the box, opened it, and took out a handwritten herbal recipe. "It's a wellness formula that's been passed down through my family."

Roxanne burst out laughing. "Why did you give that? Please, Mr. Chesson Senior wouldn't dare touch it."

But Wayne took it, scanned the page, and his eyes lit up. "This is excellent. How thoughtful of you."

Roxanne's face twisted into something ugly as she clutched her chest dramatically. Sebastian panicked, scooped her up in his arms, and carried her upstairs.

I could feel the guests' eyes on me as they mocked me, "I thought Sebastian was head over heels for his wife. But it doesn't seem like it now."

"Please. She's probably just clinging to him so he won't divorce her."

"Honestly, she's got the looks and the elegance. She's not at all the low-class woman people say she is."

Once, words like that would have hurt me. Now, I just picked up some pastries and quietly ate in the corner.

Midway through the party, Sebastian approached me. "Why did you bring a gift for Grandpa?"

I glanced at him and noticed the lipstick stain on his collar and the scratch marks on his neck.

Suddenly, I wasn't hungry anymore. I set the plate down. "You never told me you already prepared something."

Sebastian said nothing. He simply looked down and froze. Then, he grabbed my hand and asked, "Where's the ring? You haven't taken it off in ten years."

I pulled my hand away and glanced at the faint mark on my ring finger. "It must've fallen off."

In truth, I'd buried that ring—the one Sebastian gave me when he was 22, brimming with love—deep in the mountains.

As for his own wedding ring, he had lost it years ago and never bothered to replace it. So, he just stopped wearing any wedding ring at all.

His expression turned stormy. "Then wear the diamond ring I gave you three years ago."

I reminded him, "You gave that to Roxanne after she said she liked it. Did you forget?"

"I'll take you to buy a new one tomorrow," he said, grabbing my wrist with apparent frustration.

"Tessa, why do you have to make this so hard? I didn't know you were in the mountains then. And besides, you didn't die, did you?"

I almost laughed. Then I looked him straight in the eye. "Have I caused a single scene since I returned?"

It was the fact that I hadn't that unsettled him. He couldn't explain why it made him nervous.

Just then, the "pain" in Roxanne's chest seemed to have miraculously cured. She ran over and wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"Mr. Chesson," she purred. "I'm craving garlic butter shrimp."

Sebastian looked at me. He knew that it was my signature dish.

I used to prepare his lunch every day. I guessed those meals ended up in Roxanne's stomach. I wasn't surprised to learn that. I just sat there, numb.

But even my silence seemed to offend him. His tone sharpened, cold and commanding as he said, "Tessa, go make that dish for Rox."

After that day, Sebastian never appeared in front of me again. However, I would often see his image in the tabloids, depicting him as a reckless person.Later, Wayne came to the small town to find me. He begged me, hoping I would return to see Sebastian and talk some sense into him. If things continued like this, Sebastian would ruin himself. To gain my sympathy, he showed me many photos of Sebastian looking emaciated. There were also videos in which, after getting drunk, he repeatedly murmured my name."Tess, please come back. I was wrong. I'm a sinner. I've been atoning."Wayne also said that when Sebastian heard about me being with Daniel, he drove recklessly late at night, crashed, and spent three months in the hospital recovering. He cried and said, "It's my fault. I shouldn't have been prejudiced against you and kept you from the Chesson family. I understand now that you're his lifeline."My son and daughter-in-law passed away early. He's the only grandson I have left. I lo

Sebastian forcibly pinned my hands down and started tearing at my clothes. The physical disparity between men and women was stark at that moment.I screamed, "Let me go! Sebastian, are you insane? What you're doing is illegal!"He laughed maniacally. "No! I never agreed to the divorce, Tess. This is me fulfilling my duty as your husband."I thought that the man in front of me didn't even resemble the person I once knew.Tears rolled down my cheeks, and as my clothes were ripped away, despair washed over me like a tidal wave. But just then, the weight of his body on mine eased. Sebastian had been yanked off me by Daniel.Sebastian shouted in fury and shock, "Daniel, what are you doing here? Don't tell me you two—damn it! Daniel, she's my wife!"But Daniel didn't hesitate as he pinned Sebastian to the floor and punched him, again and again, right in the face. "You bastard! How dare you hurt her! I'm going to kill you!"At first, Sebastian could still talk, but by the end, his face

Sebastian reached out to pull me into an embrace, but I dodged him.I coldly said, "Sebastian, we're divorced. Leave. Don't ever come looking for me again."It was like he had snapped. He grabbed my shoulders and yelled in my face, "Tessa, how can you be this heartless? We've known each other for 12 years and have been married for ten! Are you just going to throw all that away like it meant nothing?"His grip tightened, hard enough to hurt me. I tried to push him off, but I couldn't."Sebastian, let me go. Do you even have the right to say that? Weren't you the one who gave up on us first?"His eyes were bloodshot. "If I didn't love you, then why would these past few months have been pure hell for me?"Tess, haven't you noticed that I've lost so much weight?"Of course I had.In just a few months, he looked like he'd aged a decade. His cheeks had sunken in, lines appeared around his eyes, and the tailored shirts that once fit perfectly now hung loosely on his frame."And what

Wayne scoffed. "Sebastian, do you actually believe that?"Sebastian ignored his sarcasm and pleaded, "Grandpa, please help me find her. I can't live without her. If I lose her, I'll die."Wayne shook his head. "I promised her I wouldn't help you. Give it up. In a couple of days, you'll meet the heiress from Celestial Group. If she likes you, marry her."Sebastian stood up, and his gaze turned dark, like a venomous snake ready to strike in the night."My wife will only ever be Tessa. Grandpa, if you won't help me, I'll find her on my own."What followed was a frenzy. Sebastian went all in, mobilizing every contact he had, searching for me like a madman. Before long, the entire city knew that Sebastian's ex-wife had vanished, and he had completely lost it.When Roxanne came to see him again, he grabbed her by the throat and said coldly, "This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, Tess would've never left me!"If his assistant hadn't walked in just then, Roxanne might not have

Three months ago, in Valoria, after rushing Roxanne to the hospital, Sebastian finally remembered that I'd been in the car too. When he hurried back to the crash site, all that was left was a raging sea of fire from the explosion. His face turned deathly pale. He charged toward the flames, but bystanders grabbed him and said, "Are you trying to die?"His eyes were bloodshot, full of desperation. "My wife's still in there! I have to save her!"People around him sighed with sympathy. "She's probably already gone, man. I'm sorry."He punched one of them straight in the face. "Shut the hell up! My wife is fine. She's not gone! Don't you dare curse her like that!"The guy cursed under his breath but didn't fight back.Sebastian tried to run into the flames again, but was pulled back by others. "Let go of me! My wife's in there waiting for me to save her!"Tears were pouring down his face, making him look completely deranged.People started trying to talk him down, reminding him to t

I asked, "Sebastian, if we had a child, would you be happy?"Sebastian froze before irritatedly saying, "You probably can't even get pregnant."I almost laughed. After all, it wasn't me who couldn't have kids. He seemed like he wanted to say more, but then Roxanne's voice called out for him. Without hesitation, he went to her.…The next day, he suggested that he and I go to the amusement park. He probably wanted to fix things.Back in college, we'd both worked part-time there, trying to make ends meet.I didn't want to raise suspicion, so I shipped my luggage ahead of time and agreed to go with him. But the moment I opened the passenger side door, I saw Roxanne sitting there. She smiled at me with pure malice. "Tessa, I told Mr. Chesson I wanted to go to the amusement park, and he agreed. Right, Mr. Chesson?"She raised her hand, laced tightly with Sebastian's, and waved it at me. I didn't say anything and just got in the back seat.Roxanne wouldn't stop talking during the

Hearing the sound of running water from the bathroom, Roxanne dropped her innocent act and said sarcastically, "Tessa, you're already 30. Why don't you get a divorce already?"Do you know what Mr. Chesson says about you? He says you smell old and that you nauseate him."On the other hand, he says that I have skin like porcelain and smell amazing. I'm only 20, after all."I'd heard things like this before.Back then, I had a high fever and was so out of it that I asked Sebastian to carry me to the hospital. Instead, he threw me on the floor and said, "Stop faking sick for attention. You're built like a damn ox. How could you be sick? You're not as young as Rox. Act your age."My grandpa never liked you anyway, so stop making things worse."I wasn't as young and supple as Roxanne."Roxanne, do you think being a mistress makes you superior?" I slipped the divorce papers into my coat and laughed coldly."Did you forget that when you were about to be married off in the mountains for

I only learned to cook three years ago.It was always Sebastian who cooked before he returned to the Chesson residence. He used to say that my hands were meant to heal people, and were too precious to be scarred by cooking oil. He said he loved the scent of herbs on me and didn't want me smelling like grease. And now, he wanted me to cook for Roxanne. My chest felt tight. It was like I couldn't breathe. I opened my mouth and sucked in a deep breath. As I looked at Roxanne and Sebastian, wrapped around each other, I smiled and said, "Okay."I still remembered how he carried me out of a burning building on his back 12 years ago. But the moment I lit the stove in the kitchen, whatever affection remained went up in flames, too.He leaned against the doorframe and said apologetically, "Sorry. Rox's has always had a poor appetite, but she really likes your cooking."My hands froze for a moment. My arm, which had just begun to recover, was starting to ache. I couldn't believe that he w
