Chapter 4

Penulis: Through Meteorites
After Alex posted the marriage certificate, the backlash online nearly drowned me.

My boss called me into her office and slid a resignation agreement across the desk.

"Mary, the company doesn't want to get dragged into this. You should resign."

I looked down at the paper. So that was it. Seven years of my life had collapsed, my parents didn't want me, and now I'd lost my job too.

On my way out of the building, someone at the entrance held up a phone to film me, their eyes full of contempt. I pulled my hat low and practically fled onto a bus headed for the countryside.

At least there was still one person in the world who would always believe in me.

When I saw my grandmother, Amanda Hunkins, waiting at the gate the way she used to when I was little, I couldn't hold back anymore. I ran straight into her arms.

Her voice shook as she patted my back gently.

"My darling Mary, how did you get so thin? Grandma's here. Don't cry."

That night, I finally slept.

But the next morning, I was jolted awake by shouting outside. When I ran out, Natalie was already standing at the gate.

Matt tilted his face up and called out sweetly, "Hello."

Grandma Amanda froze. "Whose child is this?"

Natalie crouched down and stroked Matt's head.

"Matt, tell the lady who your daddy is."

My face changed. I cut her off.

"Natalie, what are you doing here?"

Natalie looked up at me, a satisfaction in her eyes she couldn't hide.

"To see you, of course."

I clenched my fingers, my voice going cold.

"To laugh at me? Natalie, what did I ever do to wrong you? When your parents divorced and no one was looking after you, I was the one who brought you home to eat with my family. When you broke up with your boyfriend, I was the one who took you in. I treated you like my best friend. Why would you do this to me?"

Natalie arched an eyebrow and let out a cold laugh.

"Mary, do you think you're some kind of saint? You were good to me so that I'd be grateful to you for the rest of my life. That's what you really thought, isn't it?"

I froze. "I never thought that."

But Natalie looked like she'd just heard a joke.

"Of course you never had to think that way, because you had everything. Parents who adored you. A boyfriend who spoiled you. And me? I got to wear the clothes you didn't want anymore, live in the room you gave up, and take whatever scraps of kindness your parents felt like handing me when they pitied me."

Her eyes were red, but underneath, there was nothing but hatred.

"What I hated most was that clueless, charitable look you always had. Later, your parents ended up feeling sorrier for me than for you. And Alex married me instead. Mary, do you have any idea how satisfying that was?"

Grandma Amanda, trembling all over, planted herself firmly in front of me and shoved Natalie back out through the gate.

"Get out of here. Mary doesn't have a friend like you!"

Natalie sneered and held her phone up in front of Grandma Amanda.

"Here, look closely."

On the screen was the marriage certificate Alex had posted, along with the clip of my parents in an interview calling me obsessive and shameless.

"Alex and I have been married for four years. Mary's parents and friends all confirm it. And yet, she's still shamelessly clinging to my husband."

Grandma Amanda's breathing turned ragged.

"Mary isn't like that."

Natalie's eyes reddened, but her voice suddenly rose, each word landing like a blow.

"Don't you hate homewreckers more than anything? Well, guess what. Your favorite granddaughter has been someone's mistress for seven years."

The words landed.

Grandma Amanda's whole body went rigid.

When she was young, her husband had run off with another woman. Ever since, the thing she'd hated most in this world was a mistress. And now, the ugliest word she knew had just been pinned on me.

The next second, she collapsed.

Natalie's face went pale for an instant. She stepped back and ran off with her son.

The ambulance came fast. But Grandma Amanda didn't make it to the hospital.

Before she went, she gripped my hand, tears sliding from the corners of her eyes.

"Mary, Grandma believes you. I know you're not that kind of person."

Then her hand slipped from mine.

The last person in this world who believed in me was gone. Natalie had driven her to her death too.

I held her body as it grew colder and colder, crying until I could barely breathe.

I arranged Grandma Amanda's funeral alone and buried her under the tree I'd loved most as a child.

Right around then, Alex sent me a message.

[Mary, Natalie's in a terrible state right now. Post a video admitting you were the mistress, and I won't pursue anything you've done. We can still be together.]

I stared at those lines and let out a cold laugh.

I opened the livestream app.

The moment the camera came on, there were still tears on my face. I looked at the numbers pouring into the stream and spoke, "Hello, everyone. I'm Mary Healey. This is about Alex Timbers, Natalie Wilde, and my parents. I have some truths to tell you."

The day I left Curtis City, my parents and Alex all showed up at the airport. I hadn't told anyone my flight information. They must have had someone watching me the whole time.As I dragged my suitcase toward security, my mother suddenly rushed out and blocked my path. Her hair had gone gray in so many places. In just six months, she looked like she'd aged ten years."Mary, don't go. I am begging you. If you don't want to come home, I will move out instead. Punish us however you want. Just don't cut your dad and I out of your life."I looked at her, and there wasn't a single ripple of feeling in me. There'd been a time I'd wanted so badly to hear her say those words. When I had a high fever in the hospital. When I went through a miscarriage alone. When the whole internet tore me apart. When I held Grandma's body after she died and cried until I couldn't make a sound. I used to think that if my mother had just held me, even once, I might have found the strength to keep going.Bu

My mother came too. She showed up carrying an armful of things, her eyes red and swollen."Mary, I brought it back. I know you think it's dirty now. But I wanted to return it to you myself."I looked at the silver pendant. It had been polished until it gleamed. All I felt was revulsion."Throw it away."My mother's hand froze in midair."This is the one I had made for your child..."I cut her off."My child is gone. It's been around Natalie's son's neck. You all used it as proof of your happy little family reunion. I don't want it."Tears spilled from my mother's eyes instantly."Mary, I'm really, really sorry. Natalie fooled me back then. She kept saying you loved Alex too much, that you wouldn't survive knowing the truth. She said she wasn't trying to take anything, that she only wanted her child to grow up safe. I just had a moment of foolishness, and..."Listening to her, I almost wanted to laugh."So you all helped her hide it from me. Helped her raise her child. Helped

Alex came to Grandma Amanda's house for the first time seven days after the funeral. I was in the yard.Alex stood outside the yard gate, his voice hoarse."Mary."I didn't turn around. He walked in, bent his knees, and knelt right down in front of her memorial photo."Grandma, I'm sorry. I'm the one who did this to you."I looked at him coldly."Don't call her that. You don't deserve to."Alex's whole body went rigid. He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot. In just a few days, he seemed to have aged years. He used to show up in front of cameras always tall, clean-cut, full of confidence. Now he was unshaven, dark circles under his eyes, so disheveled he barely looked like the hero pilot the whole internet used to praise."Mary, I know it's too late for anything I say now. But I really didn't know Natalie would go find her. I didn't know Natalie was capable of something that cruel. I regret it, Mary. Can you please..."Listening to him say "I didn't know" over and over, I sud

After that livestream, public opinion flipped completely. Alex went from hero pilot to the man everyone wanted to see fall.Skyline Airways issued a statement almost immediately, suspending all of his flight duties pending a psychological evaluation and internal investigation. The sky he'd once been proudest of had shut its doors on him.Natalie fared even worse. The truth about her wrists came out fast, leaked by someone inside the hospital. The cut had been shallow. There'd never been any real danger to her life. Her whole "barely saved in time" story had only ever been meant to make Alex pity her and keep the public pressure aimed at me.Someone even dug up years of thinly veiled posts she'd made on a secret account.[Some people occupy a position that was never theirs to begin with. Sooner or later, they have to pay for it.][The one who's favored is the one who really wins.]Once those posts surfaced, everyone understood. Natalie hadn't been forced into silence all those yea

Alex was at the hospital when he saw the livestream. Natalie had just been resuscitated, her wrist wrapped in gauze. My mother sat at her bedside, spoon-feeding her soup."Don't cry, Natalie. Mary's just been spoiled rotten by us. Once this all blows over, she'll come around."My father stood by the window, his face dark."If she keeps this up, Alex should just sue her. The Healeys don't raise daughters this shameful."Alex sat off to the side, silent the whole time, until his phone buzzed with a livestream notification. He'd only meant to glance at it out of habit. But as he stared at the footage of Grandma Amanda collapsing on the screen, his face drained of color."Natalie. You went to see Mary's grandmother?"Natalie froze. Every eye in the hospital room turned to her.My mother's voice shook."Natalie. Why would you go see her grandmother?"Tears spilled from Natalie's eyes."I just wanted to explain myself. I never thought the shock would hit her that hard. I really did

I played the voice message my mother had sent me afterward. Her voice was gentle."Mary, stop crying. You'll have another child someday. I had a silver pendant made for you. Once you and Alex have a baby, you can put it on them."When the recording ended, I pulled up the livestream replay from the airport. Matt was in my father's arms, that same silver pendant hanging from his neck.I put the two images side by side on screen. One, from the day my mother placed the pendant in my palm. The other, of Matt wearing it, calling my parents grandma and grandpa in front of the cameras."My mother had this made by hand after I lost my first child. Now, it's hanging around Natalie's son's neck. I don't know when they took it. And I don't know if, every time they held that boy and called him their little treasure, they ever once thought about the fact that I'd had children too."No one in the stream was sending hate anymore. But I wasn't finished. Because the worst part wasn't any of this.
