Chapter 2

Author: Poisonous
It was then that the maid of honor, Yvonne Smith, hurried to cover Whitney with a bath towel. She then turned and shot me a disapproving look, saying, "I know your wedding is set for today, Daniel, but would it have been too much to exercise some control? How could Whitney be seen in public—"

Whitney, tightening the towel around her, shot me a furious glare and snapped, "Daniel had nothing to do with how I look! Steven was exposed to some aphrodisiacs last night. I was just being kind by helping him, but someone here is being completely petty about it!"

In that instant, a sudden tension fell over the room.

Yvonne's teasing grin instantly faltered. She still tried to smooth things over, though, saying, "You shouldn't kid around like that, Whitney. You know, we're absolutely delighted to see such affection between you two! You should get changed first."

"I'm not joking about this!" Whitney suddenly bellowed.

She then marched to the bedside, took Steven's hand, and declared in a loud, arrogant tone, "Steven is right here! I'm the one who saved him, and as for what we did last night—"

"That's enough, Whitney!" Yvonne immediately pinched Whitney's arms to stop her from speaking further.

"I haven't done anything wrong! You've always known how much I liked Steven since I was young, Yvonne! I'm also doing something noble by saving someone's life!" Whitney argued.

"That's enough!"

I felt a profound sense of weariness settling over me as I witnessed Whitney's complete lack of remorse. I immediately turned and walked away.

Whitney rushed toward me, cutting off my exit. "Have you had enough of your tantrum, Daniel? You can't just walk away now that the bridesmaids are here!"

It was then that a bunch of her bridesmaids started chiming in.

"You should calm down first, Mr. Lister. You're about to tie the knot, and you can't just throw away five years of love!"

"That's right! She wasn't willfully sleeping around with another man—she was saving someone's life! You really should try to be less exacting about the whole thing!"

"Exactly! I mean, since Steven and Whitney have known each other since childhood, you'll all become friends moving forward. You should be the bigger person!"

I let out a short, cynical laugh, saying, "I'll only be inviting contempt by standing here and letting everyone see me getting cuckolded!"

I was just about to say something when Steven's condition took a sudden turn for the worse, and the medical team rushed him off to the hospital.

Whitney's eyes were brimming with concern. She waited until Steven was gone, then turned and bellowed, "I hope you're satisfied now, Daniel. Your ridiculous accusations destroyed all my efforts from last night. You would be held responsible if Steven doesn't make it!"

I couldn't believe that she actually had the audacity to mention her efforts from the previous night. I looked at the resentment brimming in her gaze and felt my heart aching terribly. It turned out that my five years of sincere dedication were nothing compared to Steven's single appearance.

Whitney rushed out, not even bothering to slip on a pair of shoes, intending to follow the departing ambulance. She merely commanded me before leaving, "You'd better put the wedding on hold since Steven can't be left unattended."

She suddenly asked when the bridesmaids stood in her way, "What are you guys doing?"

"You're about to get married, Whitney. You shouldn't let an impulse destroy such an important occasion."

"That's right, Whitney! You see, we can just hire a caretaker to look after Steven. You should just stay put and focus on your upcoming wedding ceremony."

Whitney refused to heed any of their suggestions. She fought hard, trying to break free and get away.

I observed the unfolding spectacle with an icy gaze, then stated flatly, "You guys should just let her go since the wedding is off."

Upon hearing that, Whitney immediately stiffened, her expression one of utter disbelief. "You're threatening me, Daniel!"

I wasn't really threatening her. I was just emotionally drained from this whole thing. It was five years ago when Whitney claimed that she fell in love with me at first sight and began a relentless pursuit. I remained unmoved by her stubborn pursuit for three months, and it wasn't until a major storm struck that she defied the peril and traveled to my work location, solely to confirm my safety.

In that moment, she looked radiant, and despite being utterly drenched and disheveled, she simply said, "I'm glad that you're fine, Daniel."

I felt my heart hammering in my chest at that moment, and from then on, I became instantly and hopelessly trapped in the throes of love. I first helped the Sullivan family negotiate a billion-dollar contract when we became a couple and subsequently contributed funds and labor to enable their international expansion, thereby systematically eliminating every hurdle in their way.

Whitney continued, "Steven's entire life savings were wiped out by medical costs, forcing me to take three jobs every day just to keep him afloat! He's been nothing but demanding ever since he was paralyzed, and he even started abusing me physically! You have to help me, Daniel! I finally see the error of my ways and promise never to be a fool to offer such kindness again."I was baffled, finding it hard to believe that Whitney actually had the audacity to utter that. I sized her up, my eyes filled with scorn as I said, "You weren't offering him any kindness—you were practically throwing yourself at your so-called childhood sweetheart. I'm not interested in your pathetic story. You'd better get lost right now, or you won't like the consequences!" Whitney's gaze was hard and unyielding as she stared at me. "That can't be true! I know you still love me deeply, Daniel! You wouldn't have allowed me to be with Steven otherwise. You want me to be happy, but now my only chance at happin

"What kind? You're obviously a lovesick fool! How could the most popular guy in the whole college descend to this level…" Abigail trailed off.I couldn't make out the final, whispered remark as Abigail shot me an exasperated glare.Upon noticing my puzzled look, Abigail's cheeks flushed scarlet. She pushed me aside and rapidly bolted up the stairs, saying, "It's late already, so it's time to wash up and get ready for bed." Though the marital home had been hastily secured, and it offered none of the expected celebratory cheer, everything essential was in place. In a mutual, wordless understanding, Abigail and I chose to occupy separate bedrooms, which resulted in a night of peaceful, undisturbed sleep.I worked from home while recuperating from my injuries after the wedding, while Abigail committed to standard business hours at the office, where she brokered deals and focused on market expansion.Abigail and I finally found a moment of respite once the first collaboration betwe

George snapped, "What good is an inheritance to a useless daughter like you? You ought to know that the child I fathered elsewhere is guaranteed to be a boy, and he is the one who will be my sole legitimate heir. You'd better get down on your knees and apologize to the Lister family before your actions bring disaster down on your brother!"Whitney's eyes remained fixed on her parents for a considerable time before she finally relented and approached me. "I know it's all my fault, Daniel! Please find it in your heart to forgive me just this once!"I couldn't help but find her saccharine pleading utterly nauseating. She even went a step further, deliberately undoing two buttons on her shirt, and offered me a gaze that was a calculated blend of shyness and seduction."How utterly revolting!" I snapped before Abigail could even lash out, causing Whitney to stop dead in her tracks. It came as a shock to everyone that I would regard the overtures of the woman I used to pamper with such

I slapped Whitney hard across the face just as she was about to attack Abigail, sending her sprawling to the floor. I then loomed over her and said coldly, "Get her out of here immediately!"Whitney was roughly escorted out by the security guards, her eyes burning with fury. "I only gave away my virginity last night to save Steven! Do you really have to punish me so severely, Daniel? I'm warning you—if I leave this place, I won't come back, even if you beg me on your knees!"In an instant, the guests dissolved into pandemonium. Abigail stared at Whitney, completely stunned, and asked, "Is she truly sane? Does she not realize that this entire scene is being televised live?"I watched Whitney's retreating figure with a cold expression and said offhandedly, "Who knows?"Having exchanged a glance, Abigail and I took a deep breath and quickly plastered on our professional smiles again. In that instant, the officiant promptly stepped forward to smooth things over, and the ceremony ultim

In that instant, the remote slipped from her grasp and hit the floor as she gazed at the ongoing wedding broadcast in a state of stupor, her face contorted in utter dismay. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. How in the world could the bride be Abigail—that worthless wench who had her engagement broken off?She grabbed her phone in a frenzy and tried to call me, only to find my phone utterly unreachable. She then sped off in her car toward the site of the wedding, only to find that she was denied access, unable to pass through the front gates."Get out of my way! I'm the bride! You have no right to stop me!" Whitney shrieked in a fit of pique, raging at the security guards blocking the entrance."You ought to know that the Lister family's wedding ceremony is far too important for just any commoner to try and intrude upon and cause trouble, miss!"Whitney bellowed, "How dare you accuse me of crashing the ceremony? I'm the bride who should be getting married today! You'd better

I checked my navigation system and noticed that I was only ten minutes away from the hospital. "You can rest assured that I'm single from this moment forward. I'll see you at the wedding."I felt my spirits lifting considerably after I hung up the phone.I was just about to turn the corner when a car I recognized suddenly rear-ended me, the force of the crash forcing my car to flip over. I felt my leg throbbing in agony as the blood obscured my vision. I peered through the shattered car window and noticed Whitney walking over.Whitney glared at me with pure hatred. "You left me no choice, Daniel. I won't let anything happen to Steven!"She then disregarded my nearly lifeless state and swiftly reached into the wreck, pulling out my phone.I struggled to try and stop her, yet I lacked the strength even to pull myself out of the wreckage. "Stop!"Whitney continued fiddling with the phone, casting a brief, disgusted glance my way. "You want me to stop? I never thought you'd just turn
