Jimmie’s Pov

Pain surged through me like a flood, not the kind that tears flesh or cracks bone, no. This pain was crueller, deeper… crafted. It was the kind you feel in your soul, when the world no longer sees you as a person but a thing. A thing to cage. A thing to break.

I hit the back of the new cage with a force that rattled my skull. My temple cracked against the cold, rust-patched wall, and a sharp sting bloomed instantly. A warm trickle oozed down the side of my face, not much, just enough to remind me that I was still bleeding. Still alive.

Barely.

"Stay down, mutt."

The hunter spat the words like poison as he slammed the door behind me. I felt his disgust more than I heard it, the sneer in his voice curdled in my chest like sour milk.

I didn’t say anything. Couldn’t. My body shook with the aftermath of the electric surge the hunter woman had sent through me earlier. My muscles twitched involuntarily, and my limbs felt like wet sand. My hand, already bruised, trembled as I clu

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 55 THE COST OF BREATH

Devon’s POVThe air was thick with the iron scent of blood and scorched pine.Smoke hung low, crawling through the remnants of what used to be our sanctuary. Where there had once been laughter, training, pups chasing each other between trees, now lay silence… heavy and hollow. Only the sounds of shallow breaths, broken howls, and quiet sobs filled the battered Woodland courtyard.I stood among them, my pack shattered and bleeding, looking to me like I had answers. Like I could fix this.Their eyes didn't say it aloud, but I could feel it deep, in the marrow of my bones. You failed us.They wouldn’t say it. Not yet.But grief doesn’t lie. And blame doesn’t need a voice.Behind me, Franco’s breathing was a death rattle.“We’re losing him,” the pack medic whispered, his voice hoarse and scorched as he knelt beside Franco’s limp form.I turned. My jaw clenched. My heart thundered. “I know.”The medic’s hand hovered uncertainly, stained in ash and blood, hovering above Franco’s ruined head

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 54 The Fall Of Stillness

Devon’s POVSmoke. That was the first thing I noticed: thick, black, and bitter. It hit the back of my throat like tar as the chamber shook again, rock and dirt raining down from above. I threw my arm around Fara, shielding her as part of the ceiling cracked and fell beside us in chunks. Franco swore, already reaching for the emergency wall panel to override the gate.Nadia’s laughter cut through the chaos like a razor through silk. The alarms had already started screaming.“You see, Devon?” she spat, breathless with joy. “This is what it feels like when the walls fall. When your precious kingdom burns.”I turned on her, fangs bared. My wolf was done being caged. My claws tore through my hands like a knife cutting butter. I didn’t recognise the sound I made it was somewhere between a growl and a scream.“You brought them here?” I roared. “To our people? To the children, the elders? What the hell did you give them, Nadia?!"Her expression? Pure delight.“Everything they needed. The hea

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 53 The Devil In Chains

Devon’s POVThe blood had dried.I watched it, the claw marks I tore, down her face just seconds ago. Gone. As if I’d imagined them. The skin mended, smooth again—no sign of pain. No apology. Just that smug, mocking smile I used to know too well."Where is he, Nadia," I growled. My voice was low, but it cracked with heat. My eyes were burning gold, vision narrowing around her like a hunter’s scope. She didn’t say a word. She just stared. Smiling. Unbothered. A snake with a secret.Fara stepped beside me just as Franco and the rest of the unit caught up — the five wolves she had picked for this mission. Two limped, slowed by the sting of silver poisoning. Franco’s voice cut through the night, panting but trying to keep the humour alive.“Damn… you lot are fast.”He took one look at Nadia pinned to the ground by my claws, and his confusion flickered. “What’s she doing here?”Fara’s voice was cold. Flat with hate. “That’s what we’re just about to find out. But not here.” She turned to me

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 52 Regally Bonded

Devon’s POV“Have you ever tried to hold back a storm? That’s what it felt like. My bones were the thunder, my heart the lightning.”We waited a full day. Every torturous second felt like a deep stab to my already broken heart. They said we had to. Fara said it first, cold and calculated. She wasn’t wrong. A counterattack. A fallback plan. In case.Franco agreed.I didn’t.I didn’t care for plans or fallbacks. I wanted to rip through those goddamn hunter dens and bring Jimmie home. I wanted blood on my claws and his name echoing in my throat. But I waited. We all did.And now..Now, the eight of us stood on the cold shores of Astria, far from any hint of civilisation. We were ghosts moving through rock and woods, drawn to a place that should never have existed. A warehouse. No, not a warehouse, this was something ancient, industrial bones wrapped in rot and secrets. The kind of place that smelled of things forgotten and never meant to be found. Concrete and rust groaned beneath it lik

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 51 The Alpha’s Oath

Devon POV The council chamber was silent. Breathless, tense silence. Not the kind that screamed chaos, but the one that waited. Every eye was on me. Everywhere, holding still. Even the fire in the braziers seemed to flicker quieter. I felt it all pressing in on my skin, expectation and hope. Then Elder Throne stepped forward, his movements slow, deliberate, his weathered face carrying the weight of decades. He gave a tight bow, the old custom still sacred even now. “Alpha,” he said, voice low but clear, indicating the great seat at the head of the chamber. I hesitated for just a beat, but I walked toward the chair, each step solid, echoing across the stone floor. I took my seat. The Alpha seat. My seat. And they bowed. All of them. Even Elder Kael. My heart swelled at that. Fara stepped forward gracefully, taking her place at my side, the Beta’s chair, one heartbeat away from mine. Our eyes met briefly. There was pride in her. And trust. Then I turned to the far corne
