Eleanor Pov

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

I stood by the doorframe of the sitting room now, my palm pressed flat against the cool, polished wood as if it were the only thing keeping me upright. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. My entire world, the one I had so carefully manicured over the years, had just crumbled beneath my feet. And the dust was still settling.

Werewolves.

Devon.

It can’t be.

But it is. God help me, it is. And the worst part? Deep down… I already knew.

The signs had been there. The unnatural mood swings. The way his body would twitch in sleep, his mouth curled in a soft snarl. Sometimes, he’d make guttural noises low, barely audible, but enough to wake me up and send a chill down my spine. I used to tell myself it was stress. Bad dreams. Pressure from work. But that was a lie—a convenient one.

I’d chosen not to look too closely because looking meant knowing.

And knowing meant breaking.

Now here I was, shattered in places I hadn’t even known existed.

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 59 Tainted Lane

Devon POV The ride back to the residence felt like being dragged through thick fog laced with thorns. Every bump in the road rattled through my bones like echoes of the war I was still fighting inside and out.I sat in the passenger seat, still and unmoving, as if, if I had breathed too hard; the whole world might come crashing down. Franco was driving. Silent, focused. His knuckles were white on the wheel. I could hear the wind rushing past us through the closed windows, the way it always sounded when you’re drowning in your own thoughts. My chest… gods, my chest felt like it was being crushed in a vice. That familiar tightness. Not fear. Not entirely. Just weight. The kind that settles on your soul and never lets up. The kind you don’t cry through — because you can’t. Because even your grief has given up.Jimmie was still gone. And every fibre of my being was just trying to stay alive long enough… for him. To hold on to the bond we were only beginning to understand. To fight for wh

Later, at the Council Chamber. The chamber was still— Too still.I stood in the centre, the firelight dancing shadows along the stone walls, trying not to let my voice crack. But the weight of this night was a living thing pressing down on my shoulders. My chest felt too tight. My throat, dry as ash. I swallowed once, twice, but it didn’t help.“They knew,” I said finally, voice low but sharp. “The Hunters. They knew exactly where we were going to be.”Silence greeted me. Not denial. Not disbelief. Just that cold, thick tension you get when everyone knows the truth but is too damn scared to speak it.“I believe…” I met their eyes one by one. The Elders. The Generals. My people. My pack.“…there’s a mole among us.”The air changed.Spines straightened. Breaths caught. Suspicion sparked behind a dozen careful eyes. No one moved, and yet everything shifted.Elder Throne leaned forward, face unreadable.“A mole?” he asked. “How can you be sure?”My hands clenched. I could still feel the bl

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 57 The Unclaimed ZETA

Devon’s POVFranco’s scream tore through the infirmary like a blade through silence. It was sharp—wounded. A sound that didn’t belong to this world. My chest seized as I saw him, his body wracked with spasms, eyes glowing gold, clutching his head like it was splitting open from the inside out. Everyone froze—the mothers, the pups, the healers. Eyes locked on him, waiting, wondering if this was it. If he was going to transform... or combust.Franco staggered forward, groaning, and I knew that sound. That low, guttural pain. He was shifting. The venom had taken hold.“Franco,” I stepped forward slowly, trying to keep my voice steady. “You need to breathe. You need to calm your nerves—”“Don’t!” His eyes snapped to me, wild, betrayed, glowing, and I saw the faintest glint of a fang protruding past his lip. “Don’t come close to me, Devon!” he snarled. “You did this to me!”The words hit harder than claws ever could. I felt something in my chest collapse in on itself. But I still moved towa

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 56 THE DARKNESS BETWEEN HEARTBEATS

Jimmie’s PovPain surged through me like a flood, not the kind that tears flesh or cracks bone, no. This pain was crueller, deeper… crafted. It was the kind you feel in your soul, when the world no longer sees you as a person but a thing. A thing to cage. A thing to break.I hit the back of the new cage with a force that rattled my skull. My temple cracked against the cold, rust-patched wall, and a sharp sting bloomed instantly. A warm trickle oozed down the side of my face, not much, just enough to remind me that I was still bleeding. Still alive.Barely."Stay down, mutt."The hunter spat the words like poison as he slammed the door behind me. I felt his disgust more than I heard it, the sneer in his voice curdled in my chest like sour milk.I didn’t say anything. Couldn’t. My body shook with the aftermath of the electric surge the hunter woman had sent through me earlier. My muscles twitched involuntarily, and my limbs felt like wet sand. My hand, already bruised, trembled as I clu

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 55 THE COST OF BREATH

Devon’s POVThe air was thick with the iron scent of blood and scorched pine.Smoke hung low, crawling through the remnants of what used to be our sanctuary. Where there had once been laughter, training, pups chasing each other between trees, now lay silence… heavy and hollow. Only the sounds of shallow breaths, broken howls, and quiet sobs filled the battered Woodland courtyard.I stood among them, my pack shattered and bleeding, looking to me like I had answers. Like I could fix this.Their eyes didn't say it aloud, but I could feel it deep, in the marrow of my bones. You failed us.They wouldn’t say it. Not yet.But grief doesn’t lie. And blame doesn’t need a voice.Behind me, Franco’s breathing was a death rattle.“We’re losing him,” the pack medic whispered, his voice hoarse and scorched as he knelt beside Franco’s limp form.I turned. My jaw clenched. My heart thundered. “I know.”The medic’s hand hovered uncertainly, stained in ash and blood, hovering above Franco’s ruined head

  • The President's Mate   CHAPTER 54 The Fall Of Stillness

Devon’s POVSmoke. That was the first thing I noticed: thick, black, and bitter. It hit the back of my throat like tar as the chamber shook again, rock and dirt raining down from above. I threw my arm around Fara, shielding her as part of the ceiling cracked and fell beside us in chunks. Franco swore, already reaching for the emergency wall panel to override the gate.Nadia’s laughter cut through the chaos like a razor through silk. The alarms had already started screaming.“You see, Devon?” she spat, breathless with joy. “This is what it feels like when the walls fall. When your precious kingdom burns.”I turned on her, fangs bared. My wolf was done being caged. My claws tore through my hands like a knife cutting butter. I didn’t recognise the sound I made it was somewhere between a growl and a scream.“You brought them here?” I roared. “To our people? To the children, the elders? What the hell did you give them, Nadia?!"Her expression? Pure delight.“Everything they needed. The hea
