JACE POV

Finally, she let out a slow breath. “I didn’t want to believe them,” she admitted. “But everything was falling apart. You barely spoke to me. It was easier to believe you never cared than to believe I had been that easy to discard.”

My chest tightened. “Anna, I have never—”

“You let me leave, Jace!” she cut me off, her voice rising. “You let me walk away like I was nothing to you!”

I didn’t even realize I had moved until my hands were on her shoulders. “Because I was stupid and angry and hurt!” I rasped. “I thought you didn’t love me! And by the time I figured it out, you were gone.”

Her breath hitched, her eyes darting to my face. “It doesn’t change anything.”

“It changes everything.” I lowered my voice. “I love you, Anna. I loved you then, and I love you now.”

Tears welled in her eyes, but she quickly blinked them away, stepping back from my touch. “Even if I wanted to, Jace… I can’t go back with you.”

My stomach dropped. “Why not?”

“Because your family will never accept u

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 115

JACE POV.The Third Day, Pranzo di Ringraziamento(Thanksgiving lunch)The villa courtyard was awash in golden light, the late morning Tuscan sun kissing the vineyard walls and casting soft shadows beneath the canopy of olive trees. Laughter floated around us—cousins and relatives clinking glasses, old family friends toasting our new union. From the outside, everything looked perfect. But my eyes kept darting toward the gates.I was waiting for Vincent.“Bambini!” one of the older relatives called out cheerfully as Nathan waddled past, his chubby legs carrying him nowhere fast. Anna chuckled beside me, her fingers wrapped around a cold glass of limonata. She was smiling—tired, but beautiful. I reached for her hand, grounding myself in her warmth. Then I saw him.Vincent stepped into the courtyard wearing a sleek navy shirt tucked into pressed trousers. Sunglasses. Relaxed posture. The perfect guest. He blended in without effort, greeting the staff with a polite nod. No one would su

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 114

ANNA POV The sun was far too bright.I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing the lace hem of the soft cream dress Jace had picked out for today’s recovery brunch. My face looked calm. Almost radiant. The kind of serene glow brides were supposed to wear after a beautiful wedding. But underneath the makeup and silk, I was a splintered glass.Jace had left the room early to “handle something.” I knew what that meant. Vincent. I took a deep breath, ignoring the ache behind my ribs. Teresa peeked her head into the room. “Piccola, they’re ready. Shall I bring Nathan later?”I nodded. “Yes, please. After the food is served.”***The garden was alive with music and clinking glasses, sunlight dripping over the tablecloths like honey. The Valerians were seated at the long table, sipping Bellinis and pretending to own the earth.I felt my fingers curl into fists.Jace caught my eye from across the lawn. Just one look—and I remembered last night. His vow. His strength wrapped around mine.H

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 113

JACE POV.The villa was still buzzing with the soft sounds of music and clinking glasses, the golden Tuscan sunset pouring over the vineyard like warm honey. The wedding had ended beautifully. Anna had smiled, genuinely, even if her eyes had been clouded now and then with storms only he could see.I waited until the guests were distracted at the terrace for wine and dolci before slipping away into my study upstairs. I locked the door and took a steadying breath before dialing Vincent. The call picked up on the second ring.“Jace,” he said, brisk and straight to the point. “Heard congratulations are in order.”“Thanks,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “But this isn’t a social call.”His tone sharpened immediately. “Go on.”I closed the window slightly and lowered my voice. “It’s about Anna. Her past. The people she thinks are her parents? They’re not. She overheard them last night… talking about how they eliminated her real parents, stole their name, and raised her under the Vale

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 112

JACE POV.I sat there with her, Anna’s breath had finally slowed, but the tremor in her voice was still there, the anger simmering beneath the surface. She rested her head against my chest, her small body still shaking with the remnants of everything she’d learned and everything she now had to face.I felt her grip tighten on me as she spoke again, her voice steadying, but laced with something more determined than before.“I’ll go through with the wedding tomorrow,” she said quietly, her words like an anchor sinking into my chest. “I will. But I won’t let them leave until I expose them. I won’t let them get away with everything they've done.”Her words hit me like a force of nature, a reminder that Anna was no stranger to facing down the worst life could throw at her. Despite the heartbreak, despite the pain, she was still the same woman who had refused to bend, refused to break. I realized just how much strength it took for her to say those words.“They don’t get to walk out of her

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 111

JACE POV.I carried her up the steps onto the yacht, her face resting against my chest. She didn’t look up, just kept her eyes closed, her body too stiff against mine. My heart ached for her. I could feel the weight of her pain, and it made the whole world feel unbearably heavy.Once inside the cabin, I set her down on one of the plush sofas, the soft lighting from the lamps casting a calm glow around us. I sat beside her, but she still wouldn’t meet my eyes. She just kept staring at her hands, her fingers twitching slightly as if she couldn’t quite control them.I wanted to ask her what happened, to demand an explanation, but I held back. She wasn’t ready to talk yet. I could see that much. But I was here for her, and that was all that mattered right now.Instead, I reached out, gently pulling her into my arms again. She hesitated for a second, but then she melted into me, her body trembling slightly as I wrapped her in the warmth of my embrace.“Whatever it is,” I whispered into h

ANNA POV.I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. My hands were trembling violently as I fumbled for my phone, my mind a blurry mess of confusion and fear. Everything felt... wrong. The walls were closing in on me, and the room was suffocating. My hands were slick with sweat as I dialed Jace’s number. My heart hammered in my chest. It rang, once, twice, three times. I pressed the phone to my ear, the sound of his voice breaking through, soothing yet laced with concern.“Anna?” His voice was immediately soft, and warm. “Hey, what's wrong?”I couldn’t speak. The words got stuck in my throat, swallowed by the shaking. My body trembled so violently I could barely keep the phone in my hand. I tried to take a breath, but it felt like my chest was too tight, like I was drowning.“Anna, talk to me,” Jace’s voice came through more urgently. “What’s going on? Are you okay?”I couldn’t form the words. I just... I couldn’t. My breathing was shallow, jagged. The room seemed to spin, and everythin

ANNA POV.I should have turned away. I should’ve left before things got even worse. But there was something about their voices—something about the rawness in Rose’s tone that held me there. I couldn't move, couldn’t tear myself away from the crack in the door, the space where their words spilled out like poison.“I don’t care if Anna finds out,” Rose snapped, her voice cold, unrelenting. “Let her know. I don't give two fucks about it.”The room fell into a heavy silence, and then my father’s voice cut through it, sharp and angry.“You don’t care, Rose? You don’t care if she finds out the truth about her real parents?”Williams’ voice was low, dangerous. “You know damn well what we’ve done. And you know who we’ve had to eliminate to make sure she never found out.”I stiffened. What was he saying?“All these years, we’ve kept her in the dark, made sure she never knew who her real parents were,” my father continued, his voice laced with a bitter kind of pride. “We gave her our name, we

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 108

ANNA POVI wasn’t exactly looking for them. But when I stepped out into the courtyard with Nathan on my hip, I saw them—Rose and Vanya—tucked together under the orange tree like old college roommates catching up on inside jokes.Rose laughed at something Vanya said, a soft, feminine giggle I hadn’t heard from her in years, not even when we were teenagers. Vanya had her hand on Rose’s arm, leaning in close, whispering something behind a manicured hand. They looked… cozy. Familiar. Like two girls who had been bonding for months, not a pair who’d only just met last week.My stomach twisted.Rose caught my eye first. She offered a little wave. Vanya turned too, flashing that same polished, disarming smile she’d worn the day she congratulated me with all the grace of a viper in pearls.“Morning, Anna,” Rose called out sweetly, like we hadn’t spent the last years barely tolerating each other.I nodded, tight-lipped. “Didn’t realize you two were such good friends.”Vanya stood up slowly, b

  • The Price Of Us   Chapter 107

JACE POV The sitting room had never been this quiet. Not even during Luc—Mom’s—famous post-opera nights where only whispers were allowed and everyone sipped wine like it was holy water. Now, silence pressed like velvet over the room as the Valerians stepped in for the first time.Victoria Valerian walked in first, elegance wrapped tight around her like armor. She wore navy—stern, sharp—and carried herself like she expected everyone to adjust to her presence. Her husband, Williams, followed, his hands clasped neatly behind his back, eyes sweeping the frescoes and marble like he was appraising a deal. Rose was the last to enter, uninterested and unimpressed, her phone in one hand and her eyes flicking toward the ceiling.Across from them, Mom stood tall in her pristine cream suit, one hand lightly resting on Dad’s forearm. She was every bit the Lysander matriarch—elegant, proud, composed like a blade sheathed in silk. Dad wore his usual soft expression, but I could tell by the stif
