Chapter 4 Proof

Author: South Twig
I loosened my grip, and the shard fell with a crisp crack. I sauntered away while the bodyguard was still in shock. Darlene's curses pierced the air, but I ignored them and went right into my dorm to pack my stuff.

I got a text from the state that hit my phone at 5 p.m. sharp, "Applications for 2024's higher learning institutes will no longer be entertained."

Then, the quiet group chat blew up into life.

The class nerd asked, "Did you hand in my application, Carrie?"

Carrie replied right away, "Yep. Felham University, journalism, just like you wanted."

"Nice! Thanks, Carrie!"

The class athlete followed, "What about me?"

"Northern Academy of Athletes, your dream."

"You're an angel, Carrie!"

My deputy texted soon after, "What about me, Carrie?"

Carrie replied instantly as well, "Kinsley University, computer science. You know you love it."

"You're a saint!"

Carrie didn't hesitate to answer their questions. The chat was spammed with thank yous and emojis of gratitude. Everyone's mood was more buoyant with every passing moment.

Chris joined in the fun. "Thanks for everything, Carrie. And what about mine?"

Carrie texted a teasing emoji. "Harland University, finance. You have a business empire to take over."

Chris sent her a nice meme. "You know me so well."

Yves quickly followed, "And what about me?"

"Artemisia's Academy of Arts, oil painting too, your favorite."

Yves posted a smug emoji. "I knew I could count on you."

That was making Henry anxious. "And me, Carrie?"

"National University of Defense. You've always wanted to be a military officer!"

That moved Henry, and he kept spamming. "I'll kill anyone who tries to hurt you!"

Things were going fine, but then someone asked sarcastically, "So what'd you apply for our cold-blooded class president?"

That changed the group chat's tune, and malice flooded the screen immediately.

"Hah, farming academy in the northwest, of course. She's rearing pigs there!"

"I think the state's top scorer should be scooping dung in the mountains!" someone added.

"She deserves it for shrugging off the Grays after all they've done for her!"

The look in my eyes turned colder with every passing comment.

I texted right away, "You think you're clever?"

"Hey, class nerd, you tried to cheat in Grade 11's finals and nearly got it on your record. I dealt with it for you."

"And you, athlete, you fractured your bones during practice and took a month off school. I burned the midnight oil sorting out every single subject's notes for you."

The group fell silent for a short moment, only to be followed by mortification masked as fury.

"You're not the victim here, and what you did was barely any help to us! You're just ungrateful!"

"You disgust me! You should go to hell!"

Chris came in high and mighty. "Don't push your luck. Carrie only wanted to help. She's sending you to the bottom rung so you'll learn how to be grateful!"

Yves followed, "Ignore her, Carrie. So where'd you send her to?"

Everyone played along. "Yeah. I bet we'll have a good laugh. Tell us!"

Unlike her earlier replies, Carrie didn't text anything right away. Everyone wouldn't stop tagging her.

A cold laugh slipped out of my lips, so I decided to answer in her stead, "Stop. She doesn't know either. She can't even get into my application page."

That struck a nerve. "What? No way! You're bluffing!"

I didn't argue. I showed them the stamped admission letter. Sure enough, the group fell into stunned silence.

I had sent them the IP address logs I'd spent a good fortune buying in my previous life to the group, along with the chat history between Carrie and a shady academy's admissions office out there.

"I'll sabotage their applications."

"20 grand per person. 50 grand for high scorers. They'll never get into the academies they want. You'll be their last and only choice."

The proof was full and clear.

Henry's blade whispered through the air as he swung. I didn't move away. Instead, I held up the cylinder and clicked the switch.Highly concentrated bear spray jetted right into Henry's eyes, nose, and mouth. A scream that sounded almost inhuman escaped his lips, and his knife clanged against the ground. He clutched his face tightly and rolled like the wretched maggot he was on the ground. Tears drooled everywhere on the ground, fusing with his snot and saliva. It took him everything just to breathe. The sudden counterattack petrified Yves. I pulled out the high-wattage taser that was in my sleeve, causing blue arcs of electricity to crackle in the air. Then, I promptly slammed that taser right into Yves' lower back before he could recover. His whole body convulsed violently, and his eyes rolled into the back of his head. As Yves crumpled into the ground, the rancid stench of urine filled the air.Only Chris and I were left standing in this claustrophobic dorm. Chris was looking w

  • The Price of Blind Trust   Chapter 9 Confrontation

Once the detention center's steel doors swung shut, it was over for the Grays. Three days later, the Internet got the police's official statement.Carrie was suspected of data tampering and fraud that involved two million dollars, including the fee she charged per person sabotaged. Her cousin had been splitting the illegal money when the cops barged into the internet cafe to arrest him.Chris, Yves, and Henry were named as accomplices due to their assisting, watching the coast, and hiding the crime. The Department of Education made it official that they were disqualified from the SATs forever. They had criminal records now. After an emergency meeting held by the Department of Education, they decided to open up a portal for 24 hours that would allow the sabotaged students to set up a case file with the police and reapply for the college they wanted. The dust had settled. I was in my dorm, packing up the last of my belongings. After all, the students who had guaranteed spots in Harla

It was mayhem in the police station’s lobby. All the sabotaged students’ parents were filling the room up as if it were a sardine can. The air was thick with loud curses, cries of women, and demands of severe punishment.I was sitting on a long bench furthest away from the entrance, watching the police cars’ siren lights strobing through the glass window.A black Maybach screeched to a halt at the entrance a while later. Joshua Gray was in a crisp suit, and he came in quickly with a pair of lawyers behind him. Darlene was close behind them, her eyes red and puffy. Her face was caked in expensive makeup she didn’t get to remove in time. Her sight tore through the crowd and found me immediately. Darlene shoved the throng away and made a beeline for me. "Nancy!" She raised her hand. "I’ll kill you, you little bastard!"I grabbed a cup of water and splashed its boiling contents right at her face.Darlene’s hand went straight to her face as she screeched in agony. Her heels slipped,

Things had gotten out of anyone's hands. The class athlete barged into the dorm room like an enraged lion. He grabbed Chris by his collar, flung him away, and lunged at Carrie. "Give me back my future, you bitch!"Carrie screamed like a gazelle that was about to be devoured. Henry and Yves stood adamantly before her, but their defense was torn apart by furious parents and their children alike.Fists and cracking slaps rained on the loyal watchdogs."Fuck them up! They're in on it too!""My child repeated his year three times! You ruined their future!"Screams, curses, and the sounds of everything smashing apart melded into a cacophony. I grabbed my suitcase and backed out from a corner, my face cool. I stood by the entrance, watching this drama unfold. This was their reckoning. The apoplectic crowd would destroy them even without me lifting a finger. As I arrived at the end of the corridor, the air was beginning to play the sirens of police cars. Fully armed officers rushed into

Heavy tension solidified the air in my dorm into a tiny box. Henry was still covering his scalding face, gasping incessantly from the agony that was searing his head.Yves' eyes were tightly on my utility knife, so he didn't dare move a muscle.Carrie was still hiding behind her line of human shield, shaking from her tears. "Nancy, I know you hate me, but why did you fake those records? What did I ever do to you? You've ruined me!""That's the angle you're taking?" I snickered. "It'll only take the officers an IP and MAC address check to figure out you logged into 50 accounts. The Department of Education's servers can see everything. "Before you say anything else, I also know you had the money transferred through your distant cousin's illegal account."That killed Carrie's crying immediately. Her pupils narrowed as she fell onto Chris like jelly. It seemed that it finally hit her that I wasn't fooling around, as all her strength left her right then and there.Chris held her, but

Dead silence settled within the group. My eyes were on the screen as I gleefully tried to picture the pallor of my classmates' faces.A long moment later, texts came in like a flood."That's photoshopped! You've lost your mind, Nancy!""Carrie would never do this! You'd do anything just to make her look bad!"Chris was the first to defend Carrie. "Faking an admissions office's stamp is a crime. You're going to get sued."Yves piled on the insult, "Jealousy isn't a good look on you. The Carrie we know wouldn't do something like this! Don't try to turn us against her!"Henry went straight to cursing. "Fuck you for starting rumors about her! I'll kill you!"These idiots were still trying to shield the very person pushing everyone to the brink. I ignored the fools. "You can still check your application, even if you've logged out. It's right there."That was the spark that lit the fuse. Three minutes later, the class nerd sent a 10-second audio message, and his voice was shrill an
