Ashley shook her head, maintaining her own opinion. “Wanna bet? I'll treat you twice if I guess right.”
Jason laughed, “Shouldn't I be the one to treat you if you win?”
“Don't. Then I won't have a chance to return the favor.”
Jason let out a long sigh. He wondered why Ashley was risking something that she would obviously lose badly. “Are you sure? You won't regret taking twice the time to buy me a meal? Or are you betting like that because you know your chances of winning are almost zero?”
“Of course not,” Ashley smiled widely. “Do you think I'm playing a trick on you? I just feel confident that she won't take it for granted.”
Jason felt even more skeptical about the girl's confident statement. In his opinion, it was very unreasonable. What normal human being would knowingly pass up an opportunity to get money for free.
If he gave an amount that was very unlikely to be rejected by anyone, maybe that old woman would melt and accept it shamelessly.
“Alright. Then I'll give her an amount of money that she won't be able to refuse,” Jason took out his phone to send a message to his assistant to send a large sum of money to Mr. Kwak—though to him it was only a reasonable amount—so that the man could collect it on his way back to that house.
Ashley rounded her eyes as she accidentally read the message sent by Jason from the tail of her eye. “You don't need to push yourself like that. I think she wouldn't accept it easily, even if you give her a little.”
Jason pretended to sneer, “We'll see about that,” Jason's head then lifted in a boastful manner. This time his confidence had increased dramatically.
Meanwhile, Ashley laughed as she was slightly amused by the man's attitude.
After Mr. Kwak returned with two large plastics containing the various cooking ingredients and ready-to-eat meals he ordered, the three of them entered the house. Mr. Kwak put away and organized the ingredients that the old woman and her grandson could use for cooking the next day, while Ashley and Jason prepared the food on the folding dining table.
“Oh my... there's so much... I'm really troubling you guys. How should I repay you? I don't have anything to pay for it. This is—” The old woman, who had been helped by Jason to sit down, pointed at all the foods that filled the entire small table with a very worried face and then burst into tears.
The little boy, who saw his grandmother suddenly act like that, followed to cry loudly as he kept muttering, “Grandma don't cry, Grandma don't cry.”
Ashley quickly went over and hugged the old woman. Intending to calm her down.
“Grandma, you really don't need to think about it. These are all birthday presents for your grandson. So please don't feel like you have to reciprocate. Now, let's eat first. You must be feeling weak from being in the hospital all day.”
But the old woman still continued to shake her head with a furrowed forehead. “I'm really confused. I still feel bad for you. I feel so guilty for being so troublesome.”
“Grandma, as she said, it's a present. Your grandson's birthday present. So please accept it, so that we can feel happy too. Please?” Jason tried to convince the old woman. Then turning to the little boy with a gentle smile, “Eat it. You should eat this soup right away while it's still warm. Come on.”
Jason nodded in reassurance when the boy started to move but was still hesitant and glanced at him repeatedly. “Come on. The food will be happy if you finish it quickly. After finishing your meal, you can blow out your birthday cake and enjoy it,” Jason held up a sealed box with a birthday cake inside, ”Later, you can light the candles yourself, right?”
The boy nodded. He had already picked up the spoon and shifted the bowl filled with seaweed soup closer to him.
“Good boy. I'm sorry I can't help you light the candle. We have to go home soon.”
The woman looked at her grandson with mixed feelings. Then when she heard Jason say they had to go home, her eyes rounded, “Are you leaving? Please stay longer to eat with us.”
Jason replied, “I don't think so. It's already late,” Jason raised his hand circled by his watch, reflexively gesturing and double-checking that it really was late. “We have to go home.”
“Can't wait a little longer?” Ashley asked hesitantly. She didn't understand why Jason suddenly wanted to go home, but also felt awkward if she had to blatantly discourage him since she had to ride in his vehicle to get home.
Jason sighed as he smiled at Ashley. “Josh must be worried because you're not home yet. If I tell him now, it won't make any difference. Or do you want to try calling him first?”
“No,” Ashley quickly refused, ”No need. We'd better go home,” she then looked at the old woman to say goodbye, ”I'll take my leave, Grandma. Please enjoy the food well.”
The woman held Ashley's hand to prevent her from leaving, “Please, eat with us for a while. I can't give you anything. It is you who have given me so much.”
“I'll eat at home,” without Ashley realizing it, she glanced at Jason with some annoyance for making Josh an excuse for them to go home immediately, ”My husband is waiting for me at home.”
The woman's expression suddenly changed. There was a sense of surprise that she couldn't cover up. “Your husband is at home? I thought you two were a married couple,” the woman felt sorry for having misunderstood, ”Sorry, sorry. Alright, then. You can go home. Your husband must be very worried about you right now.”
“Grandmother, here,” Jason was seen handing over a thick brown envelope that Mr. Kwak had secretly given to him earlier, ”is a gift from me to you and your grandson. I hope you'll accept it.” He placed it rather forcefully into the old woman’s hand.
“What is this?” She looked surprised. Then when she opened it and saw a pile of money inside, she was even more surprised and handed it back to Jason, “why are you giving me that much money?! No, no! No!” She kept shaking her head and refusing.
As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h
Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal
ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc
Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t
That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavio
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril
“Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. I was going to
At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. She did everything as quickly as possible just to avoid looking like a real mess, while running after Josh. She immediately sa
