“Consider it as a replacement for your lost money. Because it might take a while to find the boy who stole it. You can use it first until your money is found.”
The old woman still shook her head. “I don't want to. Please don't make me owe you more,” she shook her head as she handed the envelope to Jason.
Ashley stepped forward to mediate between them. She took the envelope from the old woman’s hand and gave it to Jason. “Then, I'll make sure that the thief is caught soon, okay? And as for your cart, don't think about it. I'll bring it here tomorrow. You must stay at home, Grandma. The doctor said you need to rest for a few days.”
The old woman nodded. Her face still portrayed a collection of awkwardness and guilt for troubling so many people, although she also did not deny that she was overwhelmed by worry and confusion because all her savings had disappeared.
“We're saying goodbye, aren't we, Grandma?” Ashley then looked at her grandson who was quietly staring at her, “can you take us out?” she asked as gently as possible.
Ashley smiled as the little boy put down his spoon and stood up. She held out his hand and joined the boy as they walked out, with Jason and Mr. Kwak following behind.
After reaching near the fence, Ashley asked the little boy, “What's your name?”
“Minu.”
“Okay, Minu, today is your birthday. So, you deserve a present, right? Do you want a present?” Ashley baited him carefully.
But the little boy named Minu seemed to be too scared to even nod or say 'yes'. Whereas a child would normally scream with excitement when they knew they were going to get a present.
“You deserve it,” Ashley made a statement to strengthen Minu's confidence, ‘And I'll give you a present, okay?’ She then took out her wallet and gave four banknotes of fifty thousand won—all that was left in her wallet. “It's not much, so you don't have to be afraid to accept it. Just make sure you use it well for yourself and your grandmother, okay?”
Minu nodded and accepted it with a polite gesture.
Ashley then actually said goodbye and left.
“I didn't expect that woman to actually reject it, especially after seeing the amount of money in it,” Jason grumbled.
Ashley, who was sitting next to him, smiled with satisfaction. “That's because she's a good person. Otherwise, she would've been blabbering about asking for compensation and so on since we were still in the hospital earlier. But she didn't say anything. All she did was thank us and keep blaming herself.”
“But it still cost her. Her money was stolen. Then what will she do to survive under those conditions?”
“I think tomorrow I'll give her some money with a scenario.” Ashley takes a glance at Jason.
“What does that mean?” Jason frowned, not understanding what scenario Ashley was referring to, “She clearly refused earlier. Do you think one night can make her change her mind?”
Ashley's crisp laughter was heard, “It's not about ‘when’. I just need to tell her that the thief has been caught and tell her that the money I'm carrying is her lost money. Because it seems like a hassle to have to take care of this and that just to catch a boy whose identity is unknown and whose features I don't even remember. Simple, right? Case closed.”
“Wow.” Jason sighed, feeling amazed at the girl's way of thinking. “I can't believe you intended to lie to that old woman.”
“Lying for good, I guess it's okay. After all, no one is harmed.”
Jason nodded in agreement.
They drove for almost thirty minutes until they reached the basement of Ashley's apartment.
“Slow down,” after Mr. Kwak opened the door for Ashley, Jason burst in and helped her out of the car and walked slowly.
“I guess this is it. You don't have to take me upstairs.”
“Why?” Jason automatically asked, “I should at least help explain to your husband about how you got into this condition.”
“You don’t need to do that, really,” she quickly shook her head, ”I'll explain myself.”
Ashley is just worried that Josh isn't home right now. If Jason found out, she didn't know what other excuse she could come up with that would make sense. It was already late at night. There was no way she would say that Josh might be out buying something or taking care of something important. It made no sense, and could raise suspicion for Jason.
So she preferred to avoid the uncertainty.
“Are you sure you can walk alone well?”
Ashley nodded firmly, “Of course. I just need to get into the elevator and hang on for a while until I reach my floor.”
“Then I'll help you until you get into the elevator. How about it?” Jason was a little worried because there was no backrest that the girl could lean on to get to the inside of the apartment building.
Ashley felt that she had nothing to lose by accepting the offer, because she also admitted that her burden would definitely be lighter when she got a hand. After she said she was willing, Jason began to lead Ashley until the girl got into the elevator and leaned against one of its walls.
“Thank you,” Ashley smiled before the elevator doors closed.
When the elevator doors opened, Ashley was already feeling very tired and in pain holding her weight on just one healthy leg. So as much as possible she tried to walk a little faster to get down the corridor while leaning and holding on along the wall. Once in front of her house, she pressed the door code, entered, and leaned against the back of the door. Intending to take a breath and rest for a while, before walking again so that she could fully settle down in her bedroom.
Josh, who was originally sitting in the living room, after hearing the sound of the door opening, immediately moved to the corridor that was directly connected to the main door. From where he stood, a few meters away from Ashley, he could only see that the girl leaned against the door and did not immediately go inside—without being able to catch the presence of wounds which was the only reason why she stayed there for a long time.
Earlier, after Aunt Gong had cleaned up his lunch and done the rest of her work in the house, Josh started contemplating again about many things. About his relationship with Sharon, about his mother's mission, about Min Jinah's interference, about Ashley, and about himself personally. He tried hard to unravel one by one the tangled threads that tied all his problems together into one big problem that was impossible to get rid of. But at the very least, he had to find a way out that he could use to make it subside so that it wouldn't get bigger and end up strangling him to death. And as he sorts and reconnects everything—perhaps for the hundredth time—the only thing that can keep him alive is if he lets Sharon go. His mother's mission to save his father and sibling’s political future would be accomplished, he would make a huge profit for his company, Sharon would have no reason to threaten him, and Min Jinah could be quietly silenced once again. But that was something he couldn't possi
After Josh finished reading it and convinced himself to have understood the entire meaning of the sentences written there, he closed the folder with a very long exhale of relief. He felt like he had just succeeded in assembling a puzzle that he had never thought of before that might have a hidden meaning. Not only that, Josh finally found the way out that he had been looking for so hard.A sense of disbelief and a truly great pleasant surprise entered him like a miracle that he did not expect. There were several articles of agreement written and legally authorized in the document. It stated that the parties involved were Ashley and her father. An important point that Josh found quite eye-opening was a statement stating that Ashley was not allowed to sue Josh for divorce. If she did, then all the benefits she received and the shares she owned would be canceled. It was apparently related to a statement that Josh had also signed privately before marriage. Which actually made him wonder a
Ashley woke up just as the pain in her body returned to her.Last night, she managed to sleep after the medicine she took worked on her body-drastically reducing the pain and making her sleepy. But perhaps now the effect had faded and perhaps it was almost gone because Ashley felt the sensation that slashed and burned her skin again attacking her relentlessly. Her forehead was in a deep frown. And a low moan she couldn't help but let out of her mouth. The lighting in the room was still dim. And when she looked at the sofa by the window, Josh was still sleeping in a position that looked uncomfortable. The sofa was not long. So that man had to lie curved while hugging his own knees, exactly like the fetal position. She then reached out her hand to move the table clock to allow her to check what time it was. With all her might, Ashley tried to move even though her body was crumbling. It was a thousand times more excruciating than a few days ago when she slept sitting up.Her eyes squinte
After the drugs took effect and affected her body, Ashley slowly started to get sleepy again. As the pain in her whole body gradually subsided, she fell back into a deep dreamland.Meanwhile, Josh went to the living room with his cell phone with him.He plopped down on the long sofa and opened the delivery app. He sifted through the restaurants for a while before finally choosing a menu and placing his order. While waiting for it to arrive, he took the initiative to send a few messages to Sharon. This time without being burdened by the shadow of worry or fear, because he had already found half the solution to his relationship with Sharon. The two of them messaged each other, exchanging sweet words, expressing their longing, until the impromptu idea of meeting out of the Hana town that day. Then the doorbell rang. The delivery message that arrived made him stop texting and take care of the food first. He transferred the still-hot porridge into a bowl, filled some side dishes, and arran
”Well, um, yeah,“ Ashley glanced at Josh again, thinking of an excuse that sounded plausible as soon as possible, ”It was office business. Something urgent. That's why he said he'd only be gone for a while."“Alright,” came a short sigh from the sound of her mother's breathing, "And you, you better have a pretty good reason for refusing to meet me outside. I won't tolerate it if you get into mischief. Nor will I defend you if your father gets angry.""No, mom. It's not about something bad like what you think."“Okay.”As soon as Ashley hung up, Josh started asking questions. Because the girl's words that she said to her mother made his curiosity multiply into even more.Starting from what made Mrs. Ashley sound so eager to meet the girl. Why did she insist on meeting today. And why Ashley lied that he was going out for office business.“Your mom wants to see you? She's coming here?” His sentence came quickly—reflecting his curiosity that also wanted to be answered quickly.Ashley nodd
Ashley couldn't imagine having to face another problem. She was already too tired and sick of it all. There was no way she was inviting another problem to clog her head even more.So she endured it. Enduring the excruciating pain, as well as enduring the resentment in her heart for having to go through so many things that she never wanted to happen to her.Trying her best to move slowly and carefully, it took Ashley almost twenty minutes alone to take off all her clothes one by one-including the rest breaks she needed to ease the pain. Then calculatingly, she seated herself on the edge of the tub deck close to the handheld shower. She stretched out her healthy hand to unscrew the device, turned it on, and adjusted it so that the water coming out of it gushed gently. She began to wet her body except for the injured parts of her right hand and foot. Even so, she still could not prevent the water from splashing out altogether. Some of her wounds, which were still wet, stung even more fro
Josh felt that he was very powerful right now, as he had a lot of control over both Ashley and Sharon."Calm down. Sharon must be having fun right now. She's my business anyway, you don't need to think about us. Also, as I said earlier, you don't need to bother or think about finding a deal for that matter. And yes, I'm sure you wouldn't badmouth me to your mother."Josh finished his speech with great satisfaction. From now on, to him, Ashley's threats were just empty bluster with no power. Because in the end, the girl would be able to do nothing but stay in this marriage with him. Even if Ashley was desperate to destroy Josh's reputation to his family, in the end, the one who would get into trouble would be herself, not Josh. From the articles he read in the document hidden by Ashley yesterday, it was enough to show that the rumors circulating about the relationship between Ashley and her parents were not good, it was almost one hundred percent true.It made Josh guess what steps Ash
“Does it hurt?”“It hurts...” Ashley groaned with a grimace. Her eyes were closed tightly as she couldn't bear the onslaught of pain that felt like thousands of sharp needles digging into her skin.Josh couldn't bear to look at the girl. "Should I stop? What if this medicine doesn't need to be applied? I think drinking medicine is enough to treat it from the inside?" he asked hesitantly, not really understanding medical issues like this. He even knew the order in which the topical medicines were to be applied because he had read the written instructions on the package yesterday.Meanwhile, Ashley, whose medical knowledge was also not better than the man's, did not know what to answer. As soon as the stabbing pain faded a little, she even told Josh to continue administering the medicine. "Don't. They gave it to me because I have to use it. Just apply it, but not too much, and—maybe you can do it quickly so that the pain can happen all at once? So that I don't have to hold it in for too
Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t
That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavio
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril
“Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. I was going to
At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. She did everything as quickly as possible just to avoid looking like a real mess, while running after Josh. She immediately sa
After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him. He had to cover up his relationship with Sharon by tel
“Go with your husband, and follow us,” Ashley's mother prevented Ashley from getting in when the girl opened the car door next to her mother.Ashley automatically and unconsciously took a deep breath and let out her sigh softly, then replied, “Okay, Mom.”Even so, the woman could hear her heavy sigh and caught the expression of her daughter who seemed to strongly object to what she had just ordered."Wait. Why did you sigh like that just now? Are you tired of me? Don't you like listening to these words of your mother?" The woman looked at her with a serious, flat, expressionless look—which made the atmosphere between them suddenly become instantly suffocating.Ashley, who was still leaning against the car door, felt as if she was being strangled by her mother's words."That's not it, Mom. I'm going to Josh's car. I'm sorry," she ended with a bow and quickly closed the door without any further ado. There was nothing better for Ashley, really, whether it was being in the car with Josh o
Ashley felt like she was being bludgeoned by a blatantly sharp sword at that moment. How dare that man twist Ashley's words in front of her, just to save his own skin. Throwing the blame on Ashley and setting her up to be a sacrifice for her own mother. What a shameless, bad, evil man. From the bottom of her heart, this time Ashley wanted to spill all kinds of curses in this world. The man knew very well that Ashley's entire family lived in Seoul, but instead of being careful he was hanging around with his girlfriend in this city. As if there was no other safer place they could go. The two of them—or at least one of them—could have thought to find a place where it would be impossible to cross paths or meet anyone who knew them. Such a simple thing was impossible if they couldn't think of it.But what happens now? Dating in the most crowded cafe in the most crowded city in the country? Ashley couldn't help but say that this couple was really stupid.Even so, Ashley still couldn't do an
