Josh realized that if their conversation continued, it would only go around in circles without being resolved. Ashley didn’t seem to be in the mood to forgive him, and she certainly wasn’t about to agree to his request. Yet that was the core of the problem—where Ashley had found out he was in a relationship with another girl.
Maybe, it had crossed his mind that if Ashley knew, there would be a price to pay. Because she was going to live this marriage like a real marriage—as her mother always insisted.
But he hadn’t expected to get caught this quickly. And now, he might be paying a bigger price than he had ever anticipated.
Because once trust is broken, piecing it back together is harder than fixing shattered glass.
Josh finally broke the silence. “What if I apologize for everything? For everything that made you angry?”
Ashley lifted her head and looked at him.
“And what would I get in return for forgiving you?” she asked. “You’re only apologizing because you don’t want me exposing your relationship, aren’t you?”
Josh sighed. “I’m not the only one who would be in trouble if this got out.” His voice softened. He lowered his eyes, and his look became a little sad. “We both know the consequences. I’m sorry for dragging you into this mess, but I really need you to keep this secret. From everyone. Especially our families.” He hesitated. “I don’t know what I can offer you in return. What do you want?”
Ashley stayed silent. She couldn't think of any other words that she could use against Josh to make her position stronger and more favorable. Without having to apologize to the man, without having to be forever stuck keeping other people's secrets.
Also because in her opinion, in her own situation and the unexpected situation that suddenly happened today, divorce was the only best solution that had ever crossed her mind.
“Divorce,” She repeated firmly, certain of what she wanted.
Josh let out a slow, heavy breath. Frustration boiled inside him as she ignored his request to stop mentioning it. “Why do you want that so badly?”
“Isn’t it obvious? The real question is, why wouldn’t I?”
Just as he was about to respond, his phone lit up and rang. A notification of a call from Sharon appeared on his screen.
And that’s when he remembered—he had never finished typing his message to her earlier.
Her fingers hovered over the screen, debating whether to answer her girlfriend’s call while still in the middle of a heated argument with Ashley or not. As unpleasant as their exchange was, it felt like something needed a clear conclusion as soon as possible.
Ashley was watching him intently, and when Josh stole a glance at the girl, she quickly averted her eyes.
After that, his phone fell silent. Then it rang again not long after. The same name flashed across the screen—Sharon.
Josh pushed himself up from his chair. Even though hesitation flickered in his eyes, he couldn't stay indecisive and was lost in his own doubts.
"I need a moment," he murmured.
He couldn’t leave Sharon waiting too long, especially after missing her first call. Knowing her, the girl would be inflamed and upset with him again.
Ashley watched as Josh walk away and disappeared into the study room.
A curiosity passed through her. And without thinking, she got up, tiptoeing very carefully so her slippers made no sound against the floor as she walked. Following where Josh was, she stopped right in front of the closed door, pressing her ear against it, and eavesdropped on any words coming from inside.
“No… Hmm… Calm down… Yeah, I’m alone now…”
Josh’s voice was muffled, but she could still catch what the man was saying.
“Her? Still mad, I think… Haven’t seen her since we got home. She locked herself away and won’t talk… Is that a good thing? Well… What? Hm… Don’t worry… Want what?”
There was a soft chuckle after that. Ashley raised her eyebrow. Did he just seriously giggle?
Josh, who had been always speaking in such a flat, emotionless tone—could laugh like that too?
“Alright… Don’t cry… Of course I’m sad. It’s even sadder seeing you like this… Hm… Well… Hm? You’ll wait for me? What if your eyes get puffy? Well… No need to wait, okay? I’ll leave right now… Are you happy? Hm… Yes… Are you hungry? What do you want? Spicy chicken and beer? You can’t get drunk… Yes, I’ll bring it… What else? Or do you want to eat out? Somewhere nice? No? Hm… Okay, I love you.”
Upon hearing those words, Ashley immediately walked on tiptoe with wide steps and returned to the chair she had been sitting on. Josh might have hung up, or he might not have. But there was already something she didn't want to hear anymore, and she thought it was better to pretend to be seen sitting here than to be caught eavesdropping on the conversation.
And sure enough, moments later, the study door creaked open.
Josh was coming out and walked back into the living room. He grabbed his suit from the sofa before heading to the console table by the window.
He picked up his car keys, “I’m heading out. You get some rest.”
“Where to?”Ashley deliberately kept asking. Even though she could clearly guess where the man was going.
Josh sighed. “Are you stopping me?”
She felt attacked, “Who said anything about stopping you? I’m just asking where you’re going.”
“To Sharon’s place.”
Ashley let out a dry laugh.
She had no delusions about their relationship. Actually, she never even once thought of fantasizing about something impossible happening between the two of them—expected warmth or love like a real married couple. But being abandoned on her wedding night for another woman, one who was whining out of jealousy, was beyond bitter.
“It’s almost midnight,” she pointed out. “Can’t it wait until tomorrow?”
“I probably need to calm her down,” Josh said simply.
“But we’re not done talking.”
“Tomorrow,” he said, “Let's talk again tomorrow. I don't think either of us is calm enough to talk yet.”
“I think I’ve calmed down plenty,” she countered. “Maybe you haven’t.”
Josh exhaled through his nose, nodding.
He could no longer keep engaging with Ashley's words because he had to leave immediately.
The only thing that mattered now was getting to Sharon. He already made a promise to reach the girl’s place soon.
As for Ashley, he could be fairly certain that she would keep quiet. He knew she wouldn’t be reckless enough to take such a risk.
“Right. I'm going to calm down outside,” He finished his words and quickly left, not even waiting a moment for Ashley's response.
The abandoned Ashley sat stunned in her chair.A hollow breath escaped her lips. She felt her resentment surging again and was hard to contain. That man had harassed her, and now he was insulting her by leaving her just like that—on a day like this. Not that she expected him to stay to accompany her, no. But at the very least, he could have had a bit of common sense. A little logic. What if an acquaintance saw him wandering around outside? He had just apologized, and had just promised to be more careful. But the moment that girl appeared, he forgot everything and rushed to meet her. Completely wishy-washy and thoughtless. It was a wonder how he had survived this long with such a mindset. She had heard he was very intelligent. Even among his older brother and sister—both were famously skilled in politics, following in their father's footsteps—Josh was said to be even better. That’s why he was able to establish his own company. And it was not wrong though. As she remembered back when th
Her fingers mindlessly pressed buttons until a drama started playing. She simply followed the storyline, and got carried away. The actress on screen was in the middle of an angry outburst, trying to calm herself down with food—ordering a super spicy jjamppong. The actress devoured the spicy steaming noodle soup. Her face looks melting with satisfaction. She said spicy flavors helped relieve emotions. It triggered certain nerves, making the brain feel more relaxed and happy. The effect, supposedly, was as powerful as drinking or eating something sweet.‘At this hour, something soupy seemed much more appealing instead of ice cream,’ Ashley thought. Her eyes suddenly glanced at the clock on the wall. It showed past 2 AM."It's almost morning," she muttered. Her stomach was also hungry because she hadn't eaten dinner yet. Her last meal was a light snack at her wedding party this afternoon. She even had to swallow with difficulty due to being under a chaotic feeling."Hh... I really want t
Josh only smiled slightly. Somehow, his heart felt heavy at the thought of giving in to Sharon’s wishes. He didn’t have the energy, to be honest, with her. His body and mind were completely drained from dealing with problems he never expected. On top of that, he worried that if any trace of Ashley’s scent still lingered on his clothes, Sharon would definitely notice.A quiet sigh escaped his nose. His fingers, which had been gently caressing her cheek, now traced down to her full, red lips.“Do you want to do it?”Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to reject her outright. He had already hurt her enough by betraying her—by marrying another woman. Now he couldn't disappoint her more.Sharon grabbed Josh wrist and kissed his thumb. “I don’t know. I’m just not in the mood. I’d rather hit you than sleep with you.”Josh tilted his head spontaneously. Quite amazed that the girl wasn't excited. Usually, it was he who struggled to keep up with her.“How about you hit me after I shower?” he sm
Ashley gasped. When she opened her eyes, she found herself still in the living room. In a very uncomfortable position—sitting with her left side of her face resting on the table. The sunlight had already poured in and illuminated the entire room through the large glass window from one end of the wall to the other. It made her frown several times because of the glare. But the bright sunlight that had risen was nothing compared to the pain that shot through her when she raised her head.A fierce, dull ache filled her neck and shoulders, radiating upwards to tingle all the nerves in her head and downward as if gripping her shoulders and back. Even after managing to sit upright, her head was still tilted to the right—it was extremely difficult and stiff to move it back to its normal position. Groans of pain escaped her lips, echoed repeatedly there, as she struggled until finally managed to make her head face forward.Even after succeeding, the groans of pain continued to slip from her m
"Huh... Um, girl..." Bella was heard exhaling lazily, "You need to remember that Mike is a grown man. There's no need to worry about him that much either.""Grown men can also meet bad people and get into trouble, right?" Ashley replied, not convinced.Bella paused for a moment and then said, "Yes, he is. But don't you see his rock-like muscles?""Why have big muscles if you can't fight? Don't you remember last year he got beat up by a high school kid?"Bella winced, then chuckled. "Ouch... If he hears it from you, his heart must be hurting."They burst out laughing together. After the laughter faded, Ashley sat down on the couch and leaned back. "The important thing is that you confirm his whereabouts and condition first."Bella's voice was not heard for a moment, "I don't think it's necessary. Ash, I'm sure he's fine—though, yeah, his words are weird."Ashley raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "How do you know he's fine when you yourself think he's weird? He's also back to NZ tonight wit
"Yes, right?""Yes.""Yes, that's also a reasonable reason, although I didn't think of it that way yesterday. But what I experienced last night was really confusing. And again, as far as I know, ghosts are not picky about places," Bella began to speak in a low tone and elongated speech. As if deliberately creating a tense atmosphere. "They can be anywhere they like. Not only in dark or dirty spaces. In fact, it is said that ghosts nowadays like to inhabit clean and luxurious places."Ashley frowned, "Nonsense. Who said that?"But Bella didn't change her expression. She resumed her speech and lowered her voice even more, "I've seen it on supernatural programs—that kind of thing. And you know what makes the most sense?" Bella narrowed her eyes, hung her words, then paused for a moment. Her eyes continued to stare at her best friend unblinkingly, with a face that was made completely serious and seemed to hold a mystery waiting to be spewed out.Meanwhile, Ashley automatically responded w
Ashley rephrased her question, "After all those long stories—you’re telling me it wasn’t a ghost that bothered you? Then what? Who?" her tone firm but tinged with disbelief and one eyebrow rose. Not that she was disappointed because her best friend wasn't being haunted by ghosts, which meant there weren't any dangerous things lurking or to worry about. Because obviously no one in their right mind would want to experience horror—whether it was real or not. But what Ashley truly felt was frustration. After being so immersed in Bella’s story and feeling the chills crawl up her spine, it turned out that the whole story was just nonsense. She was even sure that Bella herself had no idea what or who had disturbed her throughout the night. There was no certainty whether it was connected to the strange woman who had entered Mike’s room earlier."Actually... I don't know," Bella replied nonchalantly. While picking at the assortment of dishes she had ordered as if completely unaware of how tens
Ashley called the waiter to ask for the bill after Bella had finished her meal. Both of their faces were still glowing from the lively conversation they'd shared."Wait," Bella squealed, quickly taking out her wallet as she noticed Ashley slipping her card into the bill holder."No, no. Keep it. I'll take it. You're my guest here," Ashley said.Bella's lips curled into a gentle smile as she tilted her head, "Thank you," replying with a cute, playful tone and facial expression.Ashley couldn't help but laugh."This is the least I can do. I feel bad for not spending more time with you while you were here."She let out a sigh, "I should have just gone out with you and Mike instead of handling all the wedding stuff that—" she sighed again as she realized she shouldn't say so many things that could cause prejudice.Bella gave her a reassuring grin. "Hey, don't say that. You did us a favor by sending a tour guide. It was nice to walk around on our own like real tourists on vacation."Ashley
That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavio
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril
“Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. I was going to
At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. She did everything as quickly as possible just to avoid looking like a real mess, while running after Josh. She immediately sa
After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him. He had to cover up his relationship with Sharon by tel
“Go with your husband, and follow us,” Ashley's mother prevented Ashley from getting in when the girl opened the car door next to her mother.Ashley automatically and unconsciously took a deep breath and let out her sigh softly, then replied, “Okay, Mom.”Even so, the woman could hear her heavy sigh and caught the expression of her daughter who seemed to strongly object to what she had just ordered."Wait. Why did you sigh like that just now? Are you tired of me? Don't you like listening to these words of your mother?" The woman looked at her with a serious, flat, expressionless look—which made the atmosphere between them suddenly become instantly suffocating.Ashley, who was still leaning against the car door, felt as if she was being strangled by her mother's words."That's not it, Mom. I'm going to Josh's car. I'm sorry," she ended with a bow and quickly closed the door without any further ado. There was nothing better for Ashley, really, whether it was being in the car with Josh o
Ashley felt like she was being bludgeoned by a blatantly sharp sword at that moment. How dare that man twist Ashley's words in front of her, just to save his own skin. Throwing the blame on Ashley and setting her up to be a sacrifice for her own mother. What a shameless, bad, evil man. From the bottom of her heart, this time Ashley wanted to spill all kinds of curses in this world. The man knew very well that Ashley's entire family lived in Seoul, but instead of being careful he was hanging around with his girlfriend in this city. As if there was no other safer place they could go. The two of them—or at least one of them—could have thought to find a place where it would be impossible to cross paths or meet anyone who knew them. Such a simple thing was impossible if they couldn't think of it.But what happens now? Dating in the most crowded cafe in the most crowded city in the country? Ashley couldn't help but say that this couple was really stupid.Even so, Ashley still couldn't do an
Ashley's breath caught as she suddenly found herself in a very complicated situation like this.“Who is that girl with your husband, Miss?” Mrs. Go narrowed her eyes. Intending to be able to see more clearly as well as make sure that her vision was not wrong. “Do you know her?”Mrs. Go successively asked those curious questions just as Josh was feeding his girlfriend with a very wide drawn smile on his face. Then as the two of them laughed happily and jokingly at each other, Mrs. Go began to shake her head and snort in frustration.“I don't understand—the reason she can't come is because of this?”Ashley looked at Mrs. Go with mounting panic. She was completely confused and didn't know what to answer this time. The couple's intimacy was currently being witnessed firsthand by Mrs. Go—her mother's confidante and the only person closest to her besides Bella. Seeing the current situation, Ashley is not sure if Josh can survive even if she defends him by giving the best reason. The interac
