He looked up. His eyes glanced at the girl who was staring at him intently.
“Ah—Yes?” Josh stopped typing, leaving the sentence he hadn't finished. “Go ahead. I’m listening.”
Ashley scoffed. “Are you sure? I don’t think so,” Ashley's tone sounded mocking, “You probably don’t even remember what we were talking about.”
At the same time Josh also noticed Ashley deliberately glancing at the cell phone that was in her hand. So he put his phone down.
“Oh really?” her tone is still the same.
Josh sighed, rubbing his temple. “I’m listening, Ashley. You were explaining why you suddenly want a divorce when you've never thought about it before.”
“Yes. Huh—no, no,” Ashley hurriedly corrected herself. “Who said I just thought of it now? Of course, I’ve thought about it. Who in their right mind would want to be stuck forever in a fake, business marriage like this?”
Josh raised an eyebrow. He never thought Ashley would describe their marriage in such a variety of terms.
It made him want to confront her. But before he addressed the type of marriage that existed in Ashley's perspective, it felt like he had to get one thing straight. On the topic of divorce which he honestly never expected to hear so soon.
“You never mentioned it before,” he said. “So I just assumed you’d never thought about it. But I guess I was wrong. You just haven't said it yet. Is that right?”
“Yes! That’s right!” Ashley immediately confirmed his opinion with a passionate and spontaneously raised voice.
Josh leaned back, nodding slightly.
“Alright.”
Ashley blinked. “Alright?”
Josh nodded. “I see your point. But can we not talk about this so soon? We just got married this afternoon. It’s too early to mention divorce.”
“You say that as if the mere word would bring bad luck. That only applies to people in a real marriage. As for us—no.”
“But you said this marriage was real.”
“When?” Ashley squinted. “I never said that, did I?”
Josh smirked. “When you caught me and Sharon. And you got mad.”
Ashley replayed all of today’s incidents in her head. Had she really said that? It didn’t make sense. Why would she say something that contradicts reality? Then—ah.
She remembered.
Her expression turned more serious. “I only said the wedding was official. That doesn’t mean it’s ‘real’. Besides, it was your girlfriend who snapped at me in a rude manner.”
“But you provoked her first. You barged in, calling her another woman, mistress, and everything.”
“What?” Ashley stared at him in disbelief.
“If only you hadn't come and shown up, maybe things would have been easier for the three of us.”
Josh's words just now really left her speechless. Resentment was still overwhelming her. But hearing something like that, it was enough to hurt his heart.
“You’re blaming me for catching you?” Her voice was sharp. “Did you not see how your girlfriend attacked me like a rabid animal?”
Josh's forehead furrowed and his expression hardened at the insult. He didn’t like hearing Ashley call Sharon by inappropriate names, even if, technically, it was true that she attacked Ashley. He wasn’t sure anymore where it all started or who was most at fault to blame.
But with full awareness, he forced himself to stay calm. Though he could feel his anger slowly built inside him. He reminded himself of her mother's orders, of how he should behave towards Ashley. Losing his temper again would only make things worse.
His hand holding the cell phone spontaneously gripped tighter, grounding himself. Trying to hold back all the emotional turmoil that he should not explode again.
It was enough that he lost control a moment ago when in the room. He couldn't just act like that anymore. He had to be careful. Or it would make Ashley think of him as an enemy even more. If she became too wary of him, it would complicate their relationship and make it difficult for Josh to do what his mother wanted.
“Please don’t call her that. You don't know her," he said in a low growl, holding back his anger. "You shouldn't talk about her like that. Can you at least try to understand her position?"
“Wait, you’re asking me to what?”
“If you’re mad, be mad at me. Blame me.” He exhaled. “And I’m sorry about your injury. I’ll book you an appointment with a doctor tomorrow, just to make sure it doesn’t leave a scar.”
Ashley scoffed. She couldn’t bear to see Josh constantly defending that girl. Frustrated, she snorted and looked away.
“How annoying. Because of your relationship, I’m now forced to help you hide it. Do you think that’s fair? If it gets exposed and becomes a spreading rumor, my family's company shares could be affected as well,” Ashley paused to take a breath, “I refuse to carry that burden for something I didn’t even do. Why should I suffer the consequences of your actions?”
Josh sighed.
“Ash,” he said carefully, he felt the need to set the record straight, “you don’t have to worry. None of this will fall on you. I promise I’ll be more careful. No one will find out about me and Sharon. But for this to work, I need a small favor from you—keep this between us. By not telling anyone.”
Ashley snorted again while grinning. The longer this never-ending conversation dragged on, the more exhausted she felt. Honestly, she didn’t even know why they were still talking. This conversation didn't even need to happen in the first place. She didn't know what important points could be gained from all that they had talked about earlier.
“By the way,” she muttered, “have you apologized for not being honest with me earlier?”
Josh tilted his head. “I don’t know. I feel like I’ve apologized plenty.” He leaned forward slightly. “But you haven’t. You haven't given me an apology. You also haven't decided if you're willing to help hide Sharon, for the sake of your family's reputation. For the sake of your company.”
Ashley narrowed her eyes. “Are you mocking me? Is that sarcasm?” She felt uncomfortable with Josh's last sentence.
Josh shrugged. “Didn’t you say it yourself? If this matter gets out, your company’s stock will drop. The reputations of many people will be ruined.”
Josh looked at Ashley. While Ashley looked away.
Silence somehow settled between them, thick and heavy. They both cast their eyes into the air, lost for words and lost in their own thoughts.
“Are you really going to the orphanage?” Ashley was sitting on the sofa in their room when Josh came out of the bathroom.Josh nodded lightly, “Yes.” Then stepped over to the closet and started picking out his suit.Ashley woke up moments ago to the noise of water in her bathroom. While still not fully awake from her sleep, she thought she heard it wrong and left it alone. But the sound of running water continued and finally woke her up completely. All she knew was that there was no one in the apartment. Josh didn't even come home and only dropped her off at the basement. And even though Josh had said he would pick her up to go to the orphanage, her preconceived notion was that he probably wouldn't keep his word—like he always had in the past. But, even if he did, it was still early in the morning and there was no way he would be there already. That strangeness of course made Ashley quite scared. The sleepiness that still lingered and her consciousness that wasn't fully awake influen
Josh has been upfront about the reasons that made him agree to this marriage. But Ashley certainly couldn't reciprocate his openness by telling him the reasons why she was also forced to agree to this marriage. Because her biological mother's existence was a big secret—it is her family's past sins that no one should know about, not even Josh. That's why Ashley remained silent and didn't mention her reason at all.Josh chose to tell her and his girlfriend’s story. So she would let him tell it without making this situation provoke her to take turns telling her own version of her life story—which to be honest was also very complicated and full of irony.“I may sound very selfish to you, but, can you do me a favor not to blame us too much? I really can't lose Sharon.” Josh's face paled. “I'm afraid of my family hurting her. I'm also really scared that she's trying to hurt herself again.”Ashley looked at Josh with compassion. Before, she just thought that Josh was just a jerk who was too
“What exactly have you done—” Ashley felt her throat constrict as she spoke. She knew Josh's intention in bringing up his girlfriend's life story in their conversation was simply to show that that girl was fragile and needed Josh's presence. To let her know how deep and strong their relationship was, that Josh would never be able to leave his girlfriend for any reason.Of course, Ashley was very understanding and could deduce everything easily. However, there was an important point that felt very odd that clearly disturbed her heart.Josh's remarks about her being the cause of his girlfriend attempting suicide, both recently and in the past. That girl had done it before too! She had tried to end her life more than once?! How much pain did she have to go through to try to do such a horrible thing multiple times?“You mean... She tried to kill herself… more than once? And all because of you?”Ashley was completely confused and had a hard time stringing her speculations together.Josh ha
Josh swallowed before answering Ashley's question. The memory of his careless action, which had to be a fatal mistake, came back to him very clearly.“Because of me.”Ashley frowned. She didn't fully understand what Josh was saying. But the one sentence statement spoken by the man that the reason his girlfriend attempted suicide was because of him, honestly made Ashley's heart a little relieved. The trembling and fear that hit her head seemed to subside instantly. At least she knew that she was not the cause of the horrible incident. Because after all, the intersection of destiny that the three of them are currently living is quite complicated and very emotionally draining. If Josh’s girlfriend was too depressed and lost control, it would be very possible if her marriage and Josh became the direct cause for that girl to do so.Josh sighed. “I did her wrong.” He certainly couldn't have told Ashley that after he came home from the hospital to accompany Ashley's mother and returned to Sh
“Can you not ignore me?”After spending a few moments to take a breath and let it out mindfully, Josh spoke again. His voice sounded clearly pleading. There was no longer any anger implied in his tone. His facial expression was also no longer filled with anger like before. Instead, his eyebrows were arched downwards, showing regret and pleading.Like an impossibility, Josh had managed to erase the emotion etched on his face and suppress all the explosions that were still left inside him. He was still sober enough to stop all his behavior that could potentially escalate the situation between him and Ashley. Although in reality, the situation between the two of them, it seemed like it was already very difficult to save.Ashley sighed lightly. She was indeed very surprised by Josh's anger that was poured out on her just moments ago. Because she was too shocked, she couldn't even react to it except to be stunned into silence.Josh successfully made her mind and logic instantly stop and n
After blowing his heart and mind, Josh stood still and stunned. His consciousness seemed to drift suddenly. Like someone who just woke up from being possessed. His gaze towards Ashley became unfocused. The muscles of his eyes trembled from the outburst of tension as well as a reflection of regret that immediately hit him very hard.In front of him, Ashley was looking at him with a very shocked expression.Josh's body stiffened. Not merely because he was afraid of adding new wounds to the girl or because of his yelling and anger. But because he was confused about what else to do to make up for it. He had come home with the intention of clearing up any misunderstandings with Ashley's parents, as well as repairing—though perhaps only slightly—his complicated relationship with Ashley. But now he was successfully acting the opposite. Instead of being a kind and calm person, Josh has revealed a side of himself that Ashley shouldn't ever know about.Ashley's unorganized groceries, that wer
