The phone vibrated even before dawn. I already knew news would come; there was no way not to. I did not expect it to come so quickly.

I answered without even looking at the number. The voice on the other side was anxious, nearly exploding with excitement: "He reacted. He cut one of the boys. Everyone is commenting."

A satisfied silence took hold of me. I supported the elbow in the arm of the chair and closed my eyes, tasting each word as if it were a sip of aged whiskey.

"Did you react?"

"Yes, sir. His hand, they said, looks like a claw. The guy’s got an open arm. They’re saying it was almost a bug attack."

Smile alone, letting out a low laugh. "That’s exactly what we need them to say."

Hung up without saying goodbye. I stayed a few seconds staring at the darkness of the room, just listening to the distant sound of the city waking up. Lancelot, the great man trying to hide under the thin skin of civility, had finally let the wolf breathe in front of witnesses. It was only a matter of

The world loves monsters. They give good headlines, attract glances, and sell.I spent the whole morning reviewing the newspaper clippings. Some already ran in groups of messages, circulating like a fever. "Blood Monster Attacks Local Cafeteria." The blurred photo showed half of Lancelot’s face in transition, eyes glowing, teeth exposed. He looked like all that he had always tried to deny.Smiled alone. The work was working.I didn’t need to forge anything. It was enough to push the right pieces. I called an old press contact, someone who owed me favors from the time I sponsored campaigns. I whispered in his ear that there were witnesses, that the city was not safe, and that trade was at risk. The reporters ran after the blood like dogs sniffing fresh meat. The trade association was even easier. It was enough to feed the fear. "If he loses control in the cafeteria, who will pay for the processes? You." Money speaks louder than loyalty. The papers for interdiction were ready before noo

  • The Price of a Second Chance   130 – Ghosts Of The Past

I woke up before the sun. Not that I had really slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the face of someone I had already hurt. I heard it; I listened to my own breath tearing, but I heard mostly the screams. Not yesterday’s screams. The old echoes. Those of my childhood. The sound of my father losing control, and I swore that I would never be like him.Only that now the whole city saw me exactly like this. The headlines were on all the screens of the cafe when I arrived earlier to open. One of the neighbors had glued the newspaper into the glass as if it were a trophy. "Blood Monster Attacks in Local Cafeteria." The photo was blurry, but you could recognize it. My body half transformed, eyes lit, mouth too open. It seemed a caricature of who I am.The tables filled up fast that morning. Curious customers, some I had never seen before. They entered just to order a small coffee and watched me as if I were an animal trapped in a glass cage. Every movement of mine was followed. The cup

  • The Price of a Second Chance   128 – Attack At Work

Closing the cafe by myself had become routine. Naomi wanted to stay, but I insisted she go and rest. I needed silence. At least, that’s what I told myself. The truth is, I didn’t want her around when I lost control again. The lights went out one by one, until only the reflection of the moon in the glass remained. The wood smelled of old coffee and disinfectant. It was a smell that should be familiar, but that night it seemed strange, sour, as if even the walls were judging me. That’s when I heard.Steps. Fast, muffled, outside. My body reacted before my mind. Nails clanged under the skin; breathing was short. I knew the sound of the approaching hunt, but this time, I was the prey. The first shrapnel came from the front window. The glass broke into a thousand pieces, the noise cutting the silence. Two hooded men entered simultaneously, followed by a third who threw something to the ground. The smell of gasoline spread so fast that it almost suffocated me."This is where the monster hid

I couldn’t take it.The poster was still on the counter, crumpled by my hands. It was only ink, only paper, but it seemed written on my skin. Naomi had gone home after insisting on staying a little longer. I sent her away because I knew that if she continued, I would lose the little control I had left.I did not go home. My feet chose the way by themselves. At every turn, the wolf hit harder on my chest, as if it could no longer fit me. I felt the muscles throbbing, the skin tingling, and the bones begging to break. The more I tried to suffocate, the more it seemed inevitable. In the end, there was only one place I could go: the forest.Crossing the city was a martyrdom. When I reached the edge of the city, the air changed. The smell of damp earth, leaves, and resin from the trees. The wolf inside me roared in approval. I knew I was lost. "Only once," I murmured to myself. "Just this time."But it was a lie, and I knew.I ran to the clearing that I had always known. The same place whe

  • The Price of a Second Chance   126 – Visit

I didn’t sleep that night. Even after we left the chamber, even with Naomi by my side, sleep did not come. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt again the crack of the bones, the heat of the skin tearing, and the wolf pushing against the bars. And more than that, I felt pleasure in it, and this pleasure was what terrified me the most. When the sun rose, clarity seemed a punishment. I opened the cafeteria early, but there was no energy in the body. Naomi insisted on staying, despite the dark circles. Maybe to watch. Perhaps because she really believed I needed her here. Anyway, I did not argue. The first customer came in, bought coffee without even looking at me, and left quickly. The second did not go beyond the door: he only peered inside and left. The third, a teenager, came in laughing low and filmed me with his phone while ordering an espresso. "It’s to prove to others that you haven’t eaten anyone yet," he said mockingly. I felt my nails tremble under the skin. Naomi put her hand o
