Chapter 4

作者: Summer
The clearer I saw Dante's true colors, the more I realized how blind I had been during those five long years.

Around us, the other office employees began whispering and pointing at me. Seeing that Dante did absolutely nothing to shut them down, their voices grew bolder and louder.

"Mr. Moretti hid his mafia background just so Elena wouldn't feel insecure. He even ordered all of us to keep his identity a secret. That shows how deeply he cared about her."

"She’s been living in his apartment, and she still has the nerve to throw a fit at him?"

"A nobody trying to gold-dig her way into a mafia family... she needs to look in a mirror. Without Mr. Moretti, she’s absolutely nothing."

The more the crowd gossiped, the more smug Dante's expression became. Nadia kept fueling the fire, piling fabricated accusations onto my head.

"Elena, didn't you fake a car accident just to exploit his kindness and scam him for cash? You love playing the victim even when you're hunting for money."

Her words were like cold water hitting boiling oil. The office erupted. Everyone stared at me with pure disgust, hurling vicious insults one after another.

I looked at Dante. He maintained a perfectly detached, indifferent facade, as if Nadia was merely giving voice to the deep grievances he had suffered.

My lips curled into a grim smile. Before I could speak, Dante reached out and grabbed me, putting on a grand display of playing the peacemaker.

"Alright, alright, let’s drop it. What’s done is done, and I’m not hurting for a few bucks anyway. I didn't lend you the money because I saw right through your lies. I did it to break your bad habits so my family could finally accept you."

The moment Dante spoke, the entire office grew righteously indignant, completely convinced I was an ungrateful monster.

"Exactly! Mr. Moretti is the heir to a powerful mafia clan. If you want cash, just ask! Faking an accident to extort money... that’s completely subhuman."

"A parasite like her deserves to be dumped. She should be blacklisted from the entire city."

I looked at the colleagues who used to be on great terms with me, now eagerly stepping up to trample me down. Then I thought about Dante’s twisted manipulations. Suddenly, trying to defend myself felt entirely pointless. Even if I threw the historical pay stubs directly into his face right now, he and Nadia would just spin some other delusional narrative to keep humiliating me.

Silently, I slipped the pay stubs back into my pocket. I raised my eyes and gave Dante a cold smile.

"We’ve been together for five years, Dante. Why don't you sit down and calculate every single dollar you claim to have spent on me?"

I looked him dead in the eye. "If you can't prove a single penny was actually spent on my behalf, then you better return the tens of thousands of dollars you stole from my account. Otherwise, you and your entire corporate front can expect a massive lawsuit from my lawyers."

A relationship he claimed had to remain entirely untainted by money had, in reality, been completely corrupted by financial theft from day one. This powerful mafia prince, whom everyone viewed as an extravagant spender, had actually been living off the funds I was desperately scraping together.

Dante fell into a tense, frantic silence, a flash of pure panic darting through his eyes. He couldn't recall a single instance where he had actually spent money on me. For a man who insisted on splitting the bill for a pack of convenience store condoms, there was no record to pull.

He opened his mouth to salvage the situation, but I was done listening.

As I turned to walk away, Nadia suddenly lunged forward and shoved me hard from behind. Losing my balance, I crashed heavily onto the floor.

"Elena, stop trying to distort the facts! How could Dante ever owe a parasite like you any money?" she screamed, glaring down at me. "You dare slander his name? Aren't you afraid we'll have you thrown in a cage for extortion?"

"Get on your knees and apologize to Dante right now!"

Nadia genuinely believed she still held leverage over me. But the current me no longer had a single vulnerability left in this world.

Right at that moment, my direct manager happened to pass by. Seeing Dante surrounded by the crowd, she squeezed through the onlookers, holding a physical file in her hands.

"Mr. Moretti, Elena checked out of the hospital early without proper rest after her miscarriage surgery because she couldn't afford to stay. The hospital just called to warn us that she skipped her follow-up exam, and her physical condition is in critical danger."

The manager sighed and shook her head as she looked at Dante. "Also, regarding Elena’s emergency application to advance $1,000 from her salary last week, you ordered me to deny it. It's a real tragedy. She was missing exactly that amount to get the emergency surgery in time to save her baby."

Julian let out a low, calm laugh, looking Dante up and down before eyeing the ring box. "A custom archival diamond? I remember you from the premium auction last month, Mr. Moretti. You and I were in a bidding war for the rare emerald raw stone used for Elena's brooch. With your family's massive wealth, you could have easily outbid me. But the moment the price went up, you folded instantly. Was it because you didn't care enough, or did you think she just wasn't worth the money?"Julian’s words shocked me. He had gone to a high-end auction just to get the emerald for my brooch?I turned my head to look at Julian, my voice a mix of surprise and confusion. "Julian, are you crazy? Spending that kind of fortune on a gift for me?"Julian looked down at me, his hand gently squeezing mine. "You are worth every single cent, Elena."At that moment, Dante’s eyes landed on my dress, staring at the brilliant green fire of the emerald brooch. That was the exact stone he had initially thought about bu

The next evening, I stood in front of my closet, looking at the elegant dresses Julian had sent over the past few weeks. I couldn't help but smile. He never cared about fashion trends or forcing me into a certain mold; he only cared about whether I felt comfortable, confident, and happy wearing them. After some thought, I chose a simple, elegant dark green silk dress. I carefully pinned the vintage platinum emerald brooch he gave me yesterday near my collarbone. The vibrant green of the stone caught the light beautifully, perfectly matching the fabric.Julian had offered to pick me up, but I gently turned him down. I wanted to arrive at the glass-house pavilion alone to give him a proper surprise and show him, in my own way, how much I appreciated his unwavering support over these past few months. What I didn't expect was running into Dante Moretti right outside the private entrance of the estate. The moment I saw his unmistakable silhouette standing under the dim courtyard lights, my

Within fifteen minutes, a steaming plate of pasta was placed gently in front of me. When I was halfway through the meal, Julian leaned back against the porch railing, a quiet smile playing on his lips."Full?"Whenever I neared my limit, my eating speed would naturally slow down. Because I deeply respected the care he put into cooking, I always tried to clear the plate, even if it meant taking slow, tiny bites."If you're full, don't force yourself," Julian said softly, reaching over to gently take the fork from my hand. "Overeating will only make you uncomfortable after your surgery."I bit my lip, breaking into a genuine laugh. "Julian, do you have some kind of telepathic link to my brain? How do you always know exactly what I'm thinking?""It’s not magic, Elena. Your heart is so beautifully honest that everything you feel is written right there on your face. It’s impossible not to notice."Beautifully honest? It was the first time in my entire life anyone had ever used those words t

That afternoon, I finally made time to visit the local clinic for my long-overdue post-surgery checkup. Ever since I arrived in this valley town, I had been working myself to the bone, entirely ignoring the doctor's previous warnings about my critical physical condition. As I sat in the waiting room, a familiar figure stepped through the clinic doors. It was Julian. He was here to drop off an agricultural water safety report for the county health inspector, but the moment his eyes landed on me sitting in the row of plastic chairs, his face filled with immediate concern. He walked straight over, bypassing his errand entirely, and sat down beside me. He didn't pry or ask invasive questions; he simply stayed by my side, quietly accompanying me through the entire examination. When the doctor gently scolded me for being severely malnourished and neglecting my recovery after the miscarriage, Julian listened with absolute seriousness, nodding along to every dietary restriction and lifestyle r

For the next three days, Dante deployed every tracking asset in his syndicate to hunt me down. I, of course, wasn't sitting idle either.Back during my university years, I had formed a close bond with a brilliant senior who had gone on to establish a highly successful law firm in Manhattan. I dug through my old contacts, found her number, and sent a tentative message. There was no red exclamation mark. Thank God, she hadn't deleted me.Leveraging our past connection, we quickly locked down a meeting. I laid out every detail of my situation to her, providing the explicit statements my manager had blurted out. I wanted every single dollar that had been illegally withheld from me.It was my blood, sweat, and tears. I might have been completely blinded by love in the past, but right now, my only goal was to sever every single tie to that man. I wanted what was rightfully mine. I didn't want a single dime of Dante's mafia inheritance, and I was going to ensure no one could ever brand me a p

For the next three days, Dante unleashed the full force of his mafia syndicate’s tracking assets, turning the city upside down to hunt me down. He placed his family’s extensive intelligence network on absolute high alert, desperate to locate the woman who had dared to vanish from his gilded cage. I knew exactly how he operated, which was precisely why I refused to sit idle and wait to be caught.Instead of hiding in fear, I dug through my old personal contacts until I found the number of my childhood best friend. She had climbed the ranks to become a top-tier corporate lawyer, completely removed from the corrupt underworld Dante commanded. With a steady hand, I typed out a direct message and sent it through WhatsApp.I watched the screen breathlessly until the two gray checkmarks rapidly turned blue. She hadn't deleted me, nor had she forgotten our bond.Leveraging our lifelong connection, we locked down a face-to-face meeting at a secluded diner within a few hours. I didn't hold bac
