Chapter 136

Author: Cotton
"Mark, I wasn't being selfish–"

Mia could no longer handle Mark's vicious words. She started crying.

As tears spilled from her eyes, she looked up at Mark and stammered, "I couldn't find Savory Kitchen, so I ordered soup from another place on the app. I really didn't mean to lie. I just wanted Mom to love me more."

Mark wanted to speak further, but Laura stopped him. "Forget it. Maybe she really didn't mean it."

"Mom, you have to believe I didn't do it on purpose. I only lied because Jessie came back, and I felt insecure–"

While crying, Mia looked at Laura and tried to act pitiful.

For the first time, Mark realized just how infuriating her fake sobs and pitiful act really were.

His anger boiled over as he pointed at her and threatened, "Go ahead, lie again if you dare! You claim you couldn't find Savory Kitchen on the delivery app? Funny, because I just searched for it. Five years as a top-rated shop. How the hell did you miss it?"

"Enough! Do you have to press her this hard?"

Freddy didn't text Jack back right away after hanging up.He just sat there in the dark with his head lowered. He stared at the photo of Mia on his phone screen.-Early the next morning, Jack drove Jessie back to campus. She yawned and reached for the door handle to get out when he suddenly caught her wrist.Jessie turned to him. "Is there something you want to tell me?""I told Freddy about Mia's current situation. You don't need to worry about her making a move for now. We'll just sit back and watch how this plays out."Jessie raised an eyebrow. "That's not a bad idea, but Freddy looks pretty useless. Can he even handle Mia?""He doesn't have to beat her. As long as he puts pressure on her, that's enough. I'll take my time digging. If I can find proof, she won't be able to get away this time." Jack wouldn't let Mia slip through his fingers again."Alright. Just be careful." Of course, she wasn't talking about Mia hurting him.Jack had offended too many people while taking

Jack drove over and picked Jessie up. He was about to ask whether she wanted to head to campus or back home when he saw Lucy knocking on the window.Jessie rolled it down. "You two should get a taxi. I'm going home tonight.""Shirley's pretty upset about her birthday. Aren't you going back to the dorm to cheer her up?" Lucy asked with a smile."She'll have to deal with it herself," Jessie said and rolled the window back up.Jack smirked. "You're heartless.""Haven't you already figured that out?" Jessie shot back.Jack realized then that she had a dry sense of humor, and when she decided to strike, her words always hit their mark. They fell silent for a while.Jessie kept scrolling on her phone. Her fingers moved quickly across the screen without stopping.Jack glanced over at her and said, "I looked into the Langleys during the party. They used to be close to the Judds. Marie's cousin had been engaged to the real Janice since they were kids. They grew up together. After the J

Lucy was certain there was bad blood between Jessie and Janice.Shirley sniffled. She looked a little guilty."She didn't actually get my boyfriend's phone number," Jessie said at that moment. After all, it was Shirley's birthday. It felt wrong to continue lying to her.Shirley looked at Jessie before shifting her gaze to Jack.Jack leaned back in his chair and cleared his throat with a glass of juice in hand. "I forgot my number and gave you my friend's."Jessie glanced at him.Jack continued, "I've known my wife since we were kids. No other woman could ever steal my heart.""Since you were kids?" Lucy immediately perked up and handed him another glass of juice. "Come on, tell us! I'm bored anyway. I'd love to hear about you and Jessie. It sounds sweet."Jack looked at Jessie and began talking. "I met her when I was really young. She's been my biggest support ever since. She used to be so cheerful and optimistic. She's like a ray of sunshine."Jessie felt uncomfortable and n

Rachel didn't answer. She just stared at Janice. No one knew what she was thinking. After not getting a reply, Lucy turned to Rachel and followed her line of sight before nudging her elbow. "I'm talking to you."Rachel gave her a cold look. "Janice and I are pretty close. If you talk trash about her in front of me, what do you expect me to say?"Lucy froze.Rachel's personality was a bit like Jessie's, but she wasn't as attractive.Out of the four of them, she was also always the quiet one.Now she looked at Lucy differently. She seemed aloof and barely hid her contempt."Do you know Janice?" Lucy asked.Shirley overheard them and immediately moved closer. "Did you know Janice was coming tonight?" She asked angrily.Rachel put her wine glass down. "Yeah. So?"Shirley was too furious to speak.Jessie watched Shirley's expression turn furious. She then looked at Rachel and softly said to Jack, "I didn't expect her to hide such an important fact."By then Jack had already pull

"A welcoming party for her on my birthday? Are you out of your mind?" Shirley snapped. Her mother cut her off. "Shirley, this was your father's decision. Use your head and don't cause any trouble tonight. Be polite to Janice. And one more thing, the girl you mentioned, Jessie Stewart, was never poor. Jack Gerome isn't someone you should mess with either. If you don't know how the Judd family went down, go find out."The call ended abruptly.Lucy, who had been eavesdropping behind her, pulled Rachel away the moment she saw Shirley go quiet. As they headed toward the banquet hall, they spotted Jessie and Jack walking in.Jessie had her hand resting on Jack's arm as they entered the venue. Just as she was about to speak, her gaze met Janice's across the crowd.Janice stood among a group of guys from their class. When she saw Jessie, she smiled and raised her glass in greeting. She was smiling, but there was a strong sense of provocation."Looks like she's been waiting here," Jack

If it weren't for Jack, Shirley wouldn't even bother being nice to Jessie.Who did Jessie think she was?"Well, since she turned you down, let's see what she wears tomorrow," Lucy said with a smirk. "We're all waiting for the show. Who knows? If she shows up looking cheap, her boyfriend might feel embarrassed and end up liking you instead."Shirley was quite pleased to hear that. Leaning back in her chair, she chuckled. "Actually, the day we went to that art exhibition, I got her boyfriend's contact number. I've been sending him money every day, and he hasn't turned me down once.""He doesn't look poor," Rachel couldn't resist saying."Oh, of course not. Handsome guys like him never have to worry about money. There are plenty of rich girls lining up to spoil him like our dear Shirley here," Lucy teased. On Wednesday afternoon, after class ended, Jessie was getting ready to head home to get changed when Shirley asked again, "Are you sure you don't want to wear what I picked out fo
