Chapter 2

Author: Islet 717
Ryan curled his lips beside her, his eyes full of challenge.

"Exactly, Evan. Vanessa sponsored me since I was little. Between us, there's no difference between men and women. Don't overthink it.

"Even if we slept together, it was only because Vanessa is kindhearted. She was teaching me how to be a man. It has absolutely nothing to do with your filthy guesses. We're innocent. Pure, even."

The fury shot straight to my skull.

Innocent.

What a beautiful word.

Ryan Mercer had been the poor student sponsored by the Sloane family. Since childhood, he had followed Vanessa around.

In the past, they often behaved ambiguously too.

But whenever I brought it up, Vanessa would get irritated.

"Can you stop imagining things? Look at him. How old is Ryan?

"In my eyes, he's just a child. If you keep being suspicious like this, we're breaking up."

Because of that sentence, I never dared question her again.

I had secretly loved Vanessa for seven years before I finally won her over. I truly liked her.

Whenever I saw them being close, I comforted myself by thinking I must have misunderstood.

After all, there really was a ten-year age gap between them.

Only today did I learn that age did not matter at all.

Those two had been sleeping together for a long time.

"Don't be mad, Evan.

"I've grown up beside Vanessa. Every experience I've had with being a man came from her.

"We've been used to it for years. We didn't think there was anything strange about it."

As he spoke, he deliberately paused, took off his watch, and pressed it into my hand with a considerate expression.

"This watch was a birthday gift from Vanessa. I'll give it to you as an apology. Don't be angry with her."

"Why would you give that to him?"

Vanessa snatched the watch back and looked at me with unconcealed disgust.

"You didn't do anything wrong. I spent $30 million at auction to get this for you. Why should he have it? Does he deserve it?"

My mind exploded.

Thirty million?

My memory flashed back to a month ago.

That night, I had been drinking with clients and passed out drunk.

When I woke up, Vanessa was crying beside me. There was a streak of bright red on the sheets.

During all our years together, she had always shyly said she wanted to wait until our wedding night. I respected her and had never crossed that line.

At that moment, I had been struck by panic and guilt.

She cried and accused me of ruining her, then raised the bridal gift to $30 million on the spot.

Filled with guilt, I gave her every cent without a second thought, just begging her not to be angry.

Only now did I understand.

It had all been fake.

She took the bridal gift I gave her and used it to buy Ryan a birthday present.

And that bloodstained sheet...

I looked up and stared hard at Vanessa, nearly swallowed by rage.

She and Ryan had been involved for ages. How could she possibly have had a first time left?

Everything had been a setup to scam me.

Ryan glanced at me smugly. Then he suddenly buried his face in Vanessa's shoulder, his voice choking.

"I'm sorry, Vanessa. I've made things difficult for you again.

"I didn't think Evan would mind my existence so much. If I'm making you two unhappy, then from now on... from now on, I'll stay far away from you."

He lifted his wet eyes and looked at Vanessa like some fragile, wounded thing.

"What nonsense are you talking about? I won't let you leave."

Vanessa instantly hugged him tighter. When she turned back to me, her gaze was as cold as ice.

"Evan, look what you've driven Ryan to!

"I order you to apologize to him right now. Immediately.

"Otherwise, we're breaking up."

"Ridiculous!"Vanessa shouted without thinking. "Evan Russell, why are you pretending at a time like this?"The chairman is standing right here. If you lie and claim you're his son, you'll be exposed immediately."I know you care about saving face, but this is not the time to be stubborn. Hurry up and tell the chairman you forged all those records. That's best for all of us."Otherwise, if I'm driven out of the company, don't think you'll still get to live well with me."I frowned, my tone filled with disgust."Who's pretending?"Besides, all the money we've spent in this relationship has been mine. How exactly would I be living well with you?"After saying that, I was too tired to look at her again.Under everyone's stunned gaze, I walked straight to my father's side and spoke calmly."Dad.""Mm."Hearing that simple exchange, Ryan and Vanessa's faces turned ashen.Vanessa's pupils contracted. She stared at me in disbelief."You... what did you just..."What does that m

As soon as my father spoke, Vanessa's face turned deathly pale.A wave of whispers broke out around us."What is going on with the chairman today? Doesn't he usually stay out of things like this?""Exactly. He has so many companies. Why would he care who the top performer is at one small branch?""Once he sees the records, Ms. Sloane and Assistant Mercer are finished."Hearing the murmurs, Vanessa began trembling. She rushed forward, her voice frantic."Chairman Russell, why would you need to look at that?"Evan is just a useless nobody. Please don't waste your energy on him."Ryan immediately crowded forward too, smiling obsequiously."That's right, Chairman Russell. It's the annual gala. Why don't you hear our work report instead of bothering with this mess?"Seeing the two of them panic and try to block him, my father's face turned iron blue. His tone became even firmer."What I do is not for you to interfere with."Bring me the performance records. I want to see person

Listening to her indifferent voice, my heart cooled completely. A mocking smile tugged at my lips."He's the top performer? And you want to fire me?"Fine, Vanessa. Then answer me. Whose name is on those contracts?"The company records all have my name on them. The clients only recognize me. Are you sure you want to keep lying?""Evan!"Vanessa shouted coldly. Then, as if remembering the chairman was present, she tried to steady her tone."I know you're upset because you're about to be fired, but you can't talk nonsense."Don't worry. The company is humane. You'll receive whatever benefits and compensation you're owed. Stop making a scene."As she spoke, she slowly walked toward me and lowered her voice so only the two of us could hear."Evan, enough. I'm just asking you to let Ryan have the performance credit. It's not a big deal."The chairman is too high up to bother checking the performance records for some nobody like you. Stop dreaming."Be obedient. I won't hold today

The moment everyone saw who had entered, the room erupted."Holy hell, the chairman is here?""Did he come because it's the annual gala? Is he here to praise us?""Maybe. Our branch had the best performance this year. Looks like Ms. Sloane might be promoted again."Hearing their whispers, Vanessa's face lit with secret delight. She barely suppressed her excitement and hurried forward with a fawning smile."Chairman Russell, why didn't you tell us you were coming?"I happen to have work to report. This year, under my leadership, the company took first place in performance again."Of course, that's only what I should be doing. I'll stay humble and lead the company to even better results next year."As she spoke, her eyes kept darting toward the chairman, waiting to be praised. But my father did not even look at her.His eyes were fixed on my injuries, his face terrifyingly dark."Since when does Russell Group allow employees to be beaten?"Only then did Vanessa notice me aga

As soon as Ryan finished speaking, the employees looked at one another. As vice president, I had never treated any of them badly.I fought for bigger project bonuses for them, took the blame whenever something went wrong, and even privately lent money when their families had emergencies.Naturally, no one was willing to step forward right away. The tightness in my chest eased slightly. But the next second-"I'll do it!"A fawning voice broke the silence. My assistant, Leo, bent low and squeezed out of the crowd, his face piled with flattery."Assistant Mercer... no, Mr. Mercer. Why dirty your hands with this kind of rough work? Leave it to me. I guarantee I'll make this ungrateful thing kneel and apologize to you and Ms. Sloane."My fists tightened until my knuckles turned white. Nausea rolled through me.Leo was my assistant and my apprentice. He had followed me since graduation. I taught him how to write proposals by hand and brought him along to meet clients.I never im
