Sage

Failure didn’t sit well with me. It scratched at the inside of my ribs, left an ache in my jaw from clenching too hard, too long. I stared at the results posted online, my name sitting beside a score so low it looked like a typo. It wasn’t.

Trust me.

And for once, I didn’t have an excuse. No one had drugged me or dragged me into a river this time. No wild memory loss or near-death bullshit. Just… me. Me, sitting in an exam hall, my head empty and my pen motionless.

I closed the tab before I could get angrier.

I didn’t want to burden Kaiden or the professor. They were always doing something, always trying to keep me safe, whole, unshattered. I could do this one thing on my own. I wasn’t helpless.

So I took the advice the professor gave me in the first place, find a tutor.

I asked around after class. Quietly. No desperation in my voice. Just an easy, aloof, hey do you know anyone who— and eventually, someone mentioned a guy named Malik. Smart, quiet. Kept to himself but brilliant

  • The Professor Wants Me and So Does My Bestfriend   Fuck the doubts away

Sage We went into the house together and the doubts plagued me still, only they were so little now.Kaiden noticed, “Sage, are you sure you are okay?”I nodded, trying to convince myself that Malik’s words didn't shake me. I don't have a plan yet and I don't want to keep working closely with the professor but I didn't want to be dependent on him.I knew he wouldn't mind, he could solve my issues with a snap of his fingers but this is something I wanted to figure out for myself. But what if I was running out of time?I heard the professor’s sigh as it snapped me out of my thoughts, I looked up to see him sitting on the sofa,“Come here,”My feet moved before my brain could catch up, I went to him. He pulled me on his lap as his hands brushed my hair,“I don't think I have ever told you guys how wealthy I am. I am so wealthy that I could take care of both of you.”Kaiden chuckled but my gaze was fixed on the professor’s face.“I don't want you to be hard on yourself, Sage. I didn't li

  • The Professor Wants Me and So Does My Bestfriend   Seed of doubts

SageTutoring has been going well.Malik’s voice had a way of slinking into my ears like gentle and pleasant silk, but with something under it I couldn’t quite name. He leaned forward from the chair he’d dragged beside his bed, his brown eyes focused as I scribbled down a formula he’d walked me through twice already.“You’re sharp,” he said, tapping the paper lightly. “You don’t even need me here.”I gave a small smile, keeping my focus on the notebook in front of me. “That’s not true. You explained that last part way better than the professor ever did.”He chuckled. “Well, I aim to please. I am not the best for nothing…”I didn’t think much of it at the time. Malik was always teasing me, always wearing that smile like it was stitched into his face. He’d been tutoring me for three weeks now, ever since Professor decided I needed someone extra after falling behind during everything that happened with Michael and... Kaiden. It was a good idea and considering I failed that course, I had

  • The Professor Wants Me and So Does My Bestfriend   The lines we draw

KaidenIt had been a long-ass day.The kind that leaves your body sore, your throat dry, and your brain somewhere on autopilot. From the gym, I got ready for a shoot with Adrian’s help.Despite our argument that morning. He stepped up and continued his duties as my manager. It's safe to say that our differences had been chucked out the window. As soon as I walked out of the set and stepped into the cool evening air, there was only one thing I wanted. To see him.The professor’s company ’t far. Just a ten-minute walk from the studio we were using this week, close enough to justify the detour, but not close enough that I could pretend it was by accident. I shoved my hands into my coat pockets and headed toward him. When I stepped through the building's glass doors and into the lobby, I already felt lighter. Stupid, maybe, but that was the truth. There was something grounding about him. Even in the chaos of my life, he was stillness.I made it up to his office and knocked.“Come in,” hi

  • The Professor Wants Me and So Does My Bestfriend   Coffee with a friend

KaidenThe message from the professor came in just as I was tying the laces on my boots.Professor:Spoke with a lawyer. Things are in motion. We’ll be okay.I stared at those words a little longer than I probably should have. Not because I didn’t believe him, but because… damn, it felt good. He knew I was getting antsy and instead of sitting on his ass, he did something about it.He moved fast when he wanted to. Most people talked big and folded under pressure, but not him. River handled shit.It was part of the reasons why I viewed him as a dependable person. I could depend on him and lay all my burdens on him because I knew he would fix it.I grinned to myself as I tucked the phone into my jacket pocket. Knowing he was already taking steps gave me more peace than I expected. Sage might still spiral, sure. But now, we had armor. And I liked armor. The city was already awake when I hit the street. I lit a cigarette, walking past the alley where I once got jumped, how poetic. Smoke cu

  • The Professor Wants Me and So Does My Bestfriend   The weight of what we are

ProfessorI had barely locked my car when I saw the glint of Malik’s car pulling away. Sage stood by the door, tense, shoulders square like he was steeling himself. For what, I wasn’t sure yet.But I could feel it, something had changed in him. There was a heaviness there, stretched across his face like a thin sheet of doubt.“Who dropped you off?” I asked, voice quieter than intended, but firm. I needed to know. I hated the pit that opened in my stomach at the sight of someone else driving him home.He didn’t answer. Not right away. He looked at me instead, eyes searching mine as though waiting for something. Then his lips parted, slow, uncertain.“Is our relationship in danger?”The question stunned me into silence. I blinked.“Sage,” I said softly, “why would you think that?”He rubbed the back of his neck, gaze dropping to the floor. “The guy who dropped me off—he’s a student. Malik. He’s going to tutor me.”I nodded slowly. “Alright.”“He asked me if being with you isn’t against
