Chapter 2

Author: Paper Relic
My voice was ruined ten years ago.

That was supposed to be the most fulfilling year of my life. My family was whole, and my career was thriving. Industry interviews poured in nonstop.

Aileen had even planned a unique underwater proposal for me back then.

Beside the brilliant coral reefs, she gently slid a butterflyfish ring—a symbol of eternal loyalty—onto my finger.

On dozens of submersibles surrounding us, the same message flashed across the lights. "Hendrick, I will love you faithfully until the day I die."

Sadly, that grand proposal didn't quite end on a sweet note.

Mateo was still just a salt worker back then when he happened to fall into the water.

After he was pulled out, I brought him to the changing room to dry off.

Back then, Mateo was dark, frail, and always carried a trace of self-doubt whenever he met anyone.

I felt bad for him and began to care for him like a real brother, helping him out wherever I could.

I gave him a job and invited him into my academic research and my personal life.

He hungrily absorbed everything I taught him.

He even copied my mannerisms and way of doing things down to a T.

Even Aileen would sometimes look momentarily dazed when she saw him, before her brows drew together in annoyance.

"I don't need you doing pointless things for me like picking me up from work or delivering hangover remedies. Besides, you shouldn't copy Hendrick in everything. You aren't him, understand?"

Mateo stood awkwardly behind me, offering an embarrassed reply that he only wanted to repay my kindness.

Back then, I truly valued him.

Yet his way of repaying me was to turn my celebration party into the occasion for Dad to acknowledge him as his son.

How laughable.

The person I trusted as a close friend turned out to be Dad's illegitimate son.

Overnight, I lost the father I relied on and trusted.

Mom was so overcome with rage that she suffered a heart attack and became bedridden.

I couldn't accept it. I was the one who had invited the enemy into our home and brought about Mom's downfall.

Wracked with guilt and self-blame, I knelt by Mom's hospital bed night after night until my legs went numb.

During those dark days, Aileen was the one who stood firmly by my side.

She had told me it wasn't my fault, promised she would never betray me, and assured me she would always be my rock.

I had believed her completely, leaning on her support to pull myself together again.

Yet when I returned from a three-month deep-sea research mission, I found her and Mateo tangled in passion in the very bed we shared.

At that moment, I lost my mind.

Before I even realized what I was doing, I'd grabbed Mateo by the collar, slammed him to the ground, and screamed at him.

Mateo fell to his knees in front of me, his face flushed with shame. "Hendrick, I'm sorry. Don't blame Aileen. She just missed you so much that she mistook me for you after drinking too much."

But the mix of fresh and fading hickeys and scratch marks across his skin proved this was no one-night mistake.

Those marks cut into my heart like a blade.

Blind with rage, I hurled everything within reach at Mateo.

But Aileen stepped in front of him and looked at me with a conflicted gaze. "Hendrick, during the three months you were gone, I got a phone call from the future. The caller said I would fall in love with Mateo. I tried ignoring the prophecy, but I failed."

I asked her why.

Aileen merely let out a sigh, looking as though a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

"Just think of it as me wanting someone who cares about me, someone I can trust and count on to be there when I need him. Hendrick, I was too lonely. Mateo is different. He's like you, but he loves me more."

I froze on the spot, stunned beyond belief.

I couldn't accept that the woman who once encouraged me to pursue my work and dreams had become someone who complained that I was too ambitious and didn't give her enough attention.

I let out a bitter laugh.

I couldn't bear to admit that after losing my family, I was losing my love, too.

Besides, Aileen was three months pregnant with our baby.

My voice rasped as I spoke. "If you want him, what about our baby?"

After settling everything, Aileen took Hailey's ashes and went to the tiny shack where I had lived for ten years.A bed made from two wooden planks and an uneven table were pretty much all the shack contained.I didn't know if she thought back to the year we got married like I did.Aileen had decorated our entire home according to my preferences back then. She used to say that whenever I grew tired of drifting at sea, home would always be my permanent safe harbor.Yet now, as her fingers brushed across the rough, uneven walls, her eyes turned red bit by bit.She collapsed onto the bed, her fingers digging deep into her hair.Suddenly, a yellowed notebook slipped out from beneath the rag pillow.Looking at the notebook, I froze for a second.Aileen had already picked it up and was flipping through its pages one by one."I dreamed of Hailey again today. She told me it doesn't hurt anymore and asked me not to cry."The wind and waves at sea were too rough today to head out. I n

The breathing on the other end hitched, and the line quickly went dead.As I witnessed this, a wave of absurdity washed over me.To think that back then, Aileen had given up on Hailey and me all because of a prophecy so riddled with holes.Aileen was absolutely livid. She finally understood that the so-called prophetic phone call was nothing more than a giant lie.If the person on the line truly came from the future, they would have known I was already dead. Why bother warning Aileen not to bring me back? The only explanation was that the person wanted to use the same trick to force Aileen into abandoning me all over again.Aileen stormed back to the ward where Mateo was staying."Aileen, you're back?" Mateo rushed forward, trying to link arms with her.But Aileen abruptly stepped away, her gaze icy as she looked at him.Mateo felt a sudden wave of panic beneath her cold stare. "Why are you looking at me like that…""Did you have someone make that phone call back then?" Aile

Aileen stood frozen. After a long silence, a dry laugh escaped her lips. "How is that possible? Hendrick can't be dead. According to the phone call's prophecy, he was supposed to haunt Mateo and me like an inescapable curse."Her certainty vanished into thin air the moment she set eyes on my body.Sean stared at her with a cold, detached gaze. "I shouldn't have brought you here to disturb his peace again, but I won't stand by and let you slander him even in death."Aileen's eyes locked onto the arm peeking out from under the white sheet. On it was a scar I had gotten years ago while shielding her from scalding soup.Back then, she had kissed that scar countless times. There was no way she could ever mistake it.Her body suddenly swayed, and her face drained of color in an instant.I watched in silence as she staggered forward and grasped my already cold hand."Hendrick?" she called out softly, her smile waning. "Get up already. I'm here to take you home."Those few simple wor

Aileen rushed over to the location Phoebe mentioned. The moment she saw the small wooden plaque with "In Loving Memory of Hailey Watson, Beloved Daughter of Hendrick Watson" carved into it by fingernails, she felt as if she had been hit by a bolt of lightning out of the blue. After a long pause, she gritted her teeth and spoke in a raspy voice. "That's impossible. Back then, I explicitly told the hospital to take good care of Hendrick and Hailey! Besides, I gave Hendrick a large sum of money. How could Hailey have died?"Mateo looked at the tombstone.A quick flash of delight crossed his eyes before he put on a hypocritical act and spoke up. "Aileen, it's fine if Hendrick hates us, but Hailey was innocent. Did he really just let her die from illness without doing anything, all just to make us feel guilty?"At his words, Aileen clenched her fists tight. The next second, she abruptly straightened up. "I don't believe he would do that to Hailey. I'm going to ask him myself."As she

Silence fell for a brief moment before the phone suddenly slipped from Aileen's hand and clattered to the floor.Only then did she snap back to reality. Her gaze burned into me. "Hendrick, this is utterly absurd! Fine if you want to throw a fit, but how dare you make a joke out of Hailey! Do you have a single shred of parental responsibility left in you?"The next instant, as if a thought had crossed her mind, she let out a cold sneer. "Did you really think I wouldn't be able to find Hailey just because you hid her away? If you don't get up right now, I swear I will never let her recognize you as her father ever again."Aileen assumed that the moment I heard about Hailey, I would struggle to my feet. She thought I would drop my dignity, tug on the hem of her skirt, and beg her, just like I did ten years ago when she was shipping us off to that isolated island.Or perhaps she expected me to sneer at her with the same sharp defiance Hendrick had always shown back then.Yet right n

Aileen couldn't understand my sign language. She did, however, notice the direction I was pointing. Her expression softened slightly, and she offered a rare, gentle explanation. "Don't worry. I won't send you back there again. Once we pick up Hailey, we'll go home, and everything will be alright."Truth be told, I couldn't really hear what she was saying. I only saw her shake her head.I remembered reading somewhere that as a person neared the end of their life, their senses would gradually fade away. With the loud ringing currently filling my ears, I realized I no longer had the strength to go out to sea again.Yet, I still hadn't saved up enough money to retrieve Hailey's remains. After a moment's thought, I pulled an object from my pocket with trembling hands. "Can I trade this for money?" I signed. This time, she seemed to understand what I meant.A flash of utter bewilderment crossed Aileen's eyes, quickly followed by a darkening expression. "Stop messing around. You used
