INICIAR SESIÓNEvery single soul reacts instantly to the unhinged move Shawn just pulled. First, there’s the commentator, disbelief thickens his voice: “Oh, crap... turns out Crawford really chose to do something completely stupid. He’s going straight for Parker! Someone cover my goddamn eyes, because I don't think I can stomach watching this catastrophe unfold live on national television!” Then comes the deafening gasp that dances through the bleachers as the entire stadium holds its breath. And then there's Jade and me. My hands fly straight to my face, clamping over my mouth to smother a horrified shriek. Jade launches to her feet. "Shawn, you absolute fucking slime-bag, no! Don't you dare!" Unfortunately, Shawn is completely past the point of no return. It all unfolds in horrifying slow motion. Just as Trey cleanly dodges a pair of lunging GreyField players or whatever it is they are called in football, Shawn crashes into him with missile-like force, blindsiding VSU’s quarterback and vici
"Now, as tragic and heartbreaking as Skylar's attack is, there is also a beautiful silver lining to this whole messed-up situation–and it's the exact reason why I said there's been a juicy change. The twist is that tonight, Trey will still be competing in the challenge. But he'll be doing it entirely solo." My jaw drops open so fast it makes my bruised ribs twinge. "That's right,” Ryder continues. "He's riding solo without Skylar. His reasoning? He wants to win tonight’s challenge–being a cheerleading competition–for his girl. See, they practiced this routine together. Skylar put in back-breaking hours learning every single step of this choreography. And even though she can't be out here on the field tonight, Trey refuses to let all her hard work go down the drain. He's performing her routine by himself. No matter if he crashes and burns, he refuses to let her efforts go to waste. Romantic, isn't it?" A collective, stunned hush sweeps over the stadium. The silence is so heavy you c
I don't know what I expected when Ryder called out the contending couples and the stadium spotlights swung toward the dark mouth of the tunnel. Okay, who am I kidding? I most definitely did know what I expected. I expected four people to come strutting out onto that field: Shawn and Cherry... and Trey and Natalia. But that isn't what happens at all. Instead, only two people sprint out onto the illuminated turf with their hands raised high toward the night sky. Shawn and Cherry. They look flawlessly coordinated in matching pink-and-gold athletic attire emblazoned with the Apex logo. Shawn is wearing a tailored compression top and joggers that hug his frame, while Cherry is rocking a skimpy two-piece cheerleader set–if you can even call it a set, considering the metallic bottoms give off serious panty vibes. Even Ryder looks caught off guard by the solo entrance. "Well... I guess we’re introducing them one couple at a time! Why didn't anyone tell me about the script change? Anyway
Come to think of it, this clinic room is absurdly fancy. No real surprise there, considering VSU is practically a luxury resort disguised as an institution of higher education. Right now, however, I couldn't care less about the room's interior design. My eyes are entirely glued to the screen. Jade taps away at the remote, trying to mirror the campus sports broadcast onto the screen. After what feels like an eternity of loading screens and buffering circles, she triumphantly announces, "And... finished!" She backs away from the console and walks over to the bed, carefully settling down on the edge of the mattress beside my legs. I don't even acknowledge her. All my focus hooks onto the live broadcast. The stadium on the screen is practically bathed in tension. The camera pans across the turf, zooming in on the opposing team–dressed head-to-toe in green and white–facing off against our VSU Tigers in their dark blue and white uniforms. The atmosphere on the field is so thick you co
Out of the two options Jade had graciously laid out on the table, it wasn't exactly a difficult puzzle to decide which one I wanted. At the speed I blurted out, "Number two! Let's go with option two!", even I was slightly startled by my own aggressive eagerness. Jade, however, just threw her head back and laughed, looking as though she had totally anticipated my choice all along. She agreed immediately, though she promised to still fill me in later on everything that had happened while I was unconscious. Then she ran off to fetch the doctor. Moments later, she reappeared with a medical professional whose name sounded something like Cassandra or Samantha–honestly, my fried, concussed brain was in no condition to store registry data. My mind wasn't in that white room at all. My mind was entirely at the VSU stadium, picturing Trey and wondering how on earth he was expected to navigate the first official Apex challenge completely solo. Without me. Wait. Didn't I literally just call
What is that thing that’s currently crushing my chest? Guilt. So much of it. I can't control the burning sting in my eyes as the memories of those final moments under the storm wash over me. When I passed out after that second bone-shattering blow... I didn't fight it. I actually embraced the dark. I wanted to die. I lied to myself, thinking I was ridding the world of a useless failure, when the honest-to-God truth was that I just wanted to escape the suffocating weight of my miserable life–completely abandoning Aunt Danny and Mom in the process. How flipping selfish of me. I’m fully, painfully aware of what a coward I was being. If I hadn't miraculously regained consciousness, heard Justin yell Trey's name through the storm, and realized in that split second how selfish I was for wanting death, I never would have summoned the strength to call out for Trey. And if I hadn't called out to him... Gosh, I can’t even bring myself to think about it. The bitter taste of self-hatred
