Baby Jian-Born In Sewing

I thought Stella was a tyrant at 6 months old. At 5 years old, she was a CEO tyrant. And I was 8 months pregnant with a boy who kicked like he wanted to sew his way out of my belly.

It was Monday, 2 PM, Lane-Knight Academy, third floor sewing room. I was supposed to be on bed rest. Doctor said bed rest because my feet were swollen like bread. Alexander said bed rest because he read on G****e that 8-month pregnant CEOs should not sit at sewing machines for 8 hours. Mom said bed rest because she said Lane women always have fast birth and I should stay near sewing machines, not office.

But I had a $200M company. $200M does not do bed rest. So I was in sewing room, sitting on floor, surrounded by fabric rolls, trying to fix the gold star patch Stella sewed on Alexander's butt-tux. The tux that ripped when he fell on runway 5 years ago. He still wears it every year for vow renewal. He says it's couture now. I say it's excuse to not buy new tux.

Stella and Hope were with me. Stella, 5 years old, Chief Star Officer, business cards, fired a supplier last month because his sparkle was fake. Hope, 4 years old, Chloe's daughter, quiet, draws stars all day, calls me Aunt Sophia-CEO.

They made me a bed from 20 fabric rolls, Grandpa's old coats, and pillows. "Mommy must stay and tell story of 30 letters!" Stella ordered, holding her business card.

Hope put small hand on my belly. "Baby Jian says he wants to stay too. He told me." Baby Jian kicked hard when Hope touched. Strong kick. Like he understood.

Alexander was on a $1B call in next room, whispering because he was trying to be on call and hold Stella's hand at same time. He wore grey sweater — Stella's favorite — even though it was 30 degrees and he was sweating. He wears grey sweater whenever Stella demands, which is every day.

At exactly 2:13 PM, while I was telling Stella and Hope story of how Grandpa Jian and Grandmother Margaret fell in love in 1975 and wrote 30 letters, my water broke.

Not like movies with screaming. Just pop. Warm. On Grandpa's old coat that was part of fabric bed. On the coat that still smelled like cigarettes and stars after 50 years.

Stella shouted, helpful: "Mommy wet herself!"

Hope, serious, said: "No, baby is coming. Like in book."

Alexander dropped his phone. I heard his board on other side: "Mr. Knight? Mr. Knight? $1B deal?" and Alexander said, "My wife's water broke, deal tomorrow," and hung up. He hung up $1B deal for water. That's my husband.

Mom came with cane — she doesn't need cane anymore, cancer clear 5 years, but likes it for style — and looked at floor and said one sentence: "Not hospital. Too late. 30 minutes. Lane women fast."

30 minutes. Hospital 40 minutes away. No time.

"Call Dr. Patel! Call Maya! Call Mr. Wu!" Alexander shouted, picking me up. I was 160 pounds now, not 100 pounds when we married. He picked me up like I was still 100 pounds.

Chloe ran from sewing floor, thread still on shirt, 28 years old now, head of sewing floor, employee of year twice, 5 years no stealing. She held my hand. "CEO Lane, breathe, breathe like you taught me when I was pregnant with Hope."

They carried me to third floor sewing room — the oldest room, with 10 sewing machines, all Grandpa's, all with red thread turned pink by sun. The room where I was born? No, Mom was born near sewing machine. I was born in hospital because Dad David wanted hospital. But Mom said this baby will be born near sewing machines, like true Lane.

We laid clean sheets — real Starlight silk, $500 a sheet, I told Mom not to use it, she said "Baby deserves silk, not plastic" — on floor between two sewing machines.

Dr. Patel arrived in 15 minutes, running, tie flying, nurse bag, sweating. "Mrs. Knight! Again? Last time garden, now sewing room? Next time where, runway? I am too old to run!"

Mr. Wu, 75-year-old tailor who worked with Grandpa since 1978, also came, with his own stool. "I delivered Stella's mother, I will deliver this baby too," he said in Chinese. He was there when I was born? No, but he liked to say that.

Stella and Hope refused to leave. They sat at my feet, holding my ankles, because Mom said Lane women see birth early to be strong. I wanted to say no, but I was pushing and couldn't talk.

At 2:47 PM, after 34 minutes of pushing, swearing in English, Chinese, Italian — I learned Italian swearing from Vogue editor — baby Jian came.

Quiet first. No cry. Just eyes open, looking at sewing machines.

Then Mr. Wu pressed pedal of Grandpa's first sewing machine — the one that hid $50M diamond, the one that started everything — click-clack, click-clack.

Baby heard click-clack and cried. Loud. Strong. Lane cry. Knight cry.

"It's a boy! 7.2 pounds!" Dr. Patel shouted, lifting him, bloody, beautiful, angry face like Alexander when board says no.

Alexander cried first. Before me. Billionaire CEO who never cries in board meetings, cried like baby, holding my sweaty face, kissing forehead, whispering "Jian Margaret Knight, Jian Margaret Knight, you are here."

I took baby, put on chest. He stopped crying immediately when he heard heartbeat. Same as Stella. Same as Hope when she was baby and I held her once when Chloe was sick and Chloe let me.

Stella climbed onto sewing table — unsafe, but no one stopped Chief Star Officer — and announced loudly: "I am big sister now! Chief Big Sister Officer! And I will teach him how to fire fake sparkle suppliers!"

Hope touched baby's tiny foot with one finger, gentle, and whispered, "He has small feet like my dolls. I will make him small shoes. With stars."

Chloe cried in corner, happy tears, holding Mom who cried too, whispering "Jian, see? Second grandson, see? Two grandsons from you?"

Grandmother Knight arrived at 3:15 PM, 20 minutes late because wheelchair lift broke, but she came with pearls and new will already written in her bag. She looked at baby Jian, touched his head with thin hand, and said, "He has Jian's nose. Stubborn nose. Good nose for smelling fake velvet."

Baby Jian sneezed. Everyone laughed, cried, laughed again. Stella said "He likes my perfume!" which was actually fabric glue.

That night, we didn't go to hospital. Dr. Patel said baby healthy, lungs loud, Lane lungs. We stayed in sewing room, baby in drawer-crib — same drawer-crib Stella slept in, same drawer that was once Grandpa's fabric drawer from 1975. Three babies, same drawer.

Alexander did dishes at 11 PM — Clause 5 — while holding baby Jian in sling on chest, same sling he used for Stella and Hope, now with milk stains from three babies.

I sat on floor, midnight milk in hand — still needed after birth — and opened GoodNovel app on phone. 25k words showed. I needed 5k more.

I wrote Chapter 26 author note: Baby born in sewing room, not hospital, because Lane babies born where stars cut.

Posted this long version. Word count jumped from 25,000 to 27,500. Good.

Two daughters asleep on coats, Mom asleep on chair, Chloe asleep holding Hope, Grandmother asleep in wheelchair, Alexander asleep sitting up with baby on chest, sewing machines quiet but still warm.

I whispered to baby Jian: "Welcome to 30k family. We are almost there. Two more chapters and Mommy gets bonus for your milk."

He kicked in sleep. Approved.

Stella was 5 years and 3 months old when she started real school. Not Lane-Knight Academy — real school, with uniforms that were not Starlight, with teachers who did not know she was Chief Star Officer. We bought her a backpack that was bigger than her. She insisted on packing it herself: one sewing kit, one star sticker sheet, one business card that said STELLA KNIGHT — CHIEF STAR OFFICER, and one photo of Baby Jian in his drawer-crib."For when I miss him," she said seriously.Hope, 4, did not start school yet. She stayed at the Academy with Chloe and Mom, drawing stars. But she cried when Stella left."Who will stamp APPROVED now?" Hope asked, holding Stella's hand at the gate."I will stamp from school. I will come back at 3 PM and stamp," Stella promised, like a CEO promising a client.Alexander drove her. He wanted to walk her in, but Stella said, "Daddy, CEOs walk themselves in."So he parked outside, in grey sweater — because Stella demanded grey sweater for first day — and wa

Three days after Baby Jian was born in sewing room, I got an email that made me forget I was supposed to be on bed rest.Subject: *Dior — $200M Collaboration — URGENT — Reply in 24 hours*From: Paris. Dior CEO. Not assistant. CEO himself. He wrote:> Sophia,> We saw Stella's fall video, Chloe's redemption arc, and Baby Jian's birth in sewing room. Our team loves your story. We want Starlight to co-design Dior x Starlight — 100 looks, real tailors, not factories. $200M order. Must start tomorrow. Can you do it with newborn?> — Bernard$200M. • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    The Second Vow Renewal

Five years later.Lane Garden was different now.No longer just garden. Now it was Lane-Knight Academy — first floor is free fashion school for girls who can't afford design school, second floor is Stella and Hope's playroom, third floor is still sewing machines that go click-clack day and night. The garden still had red thread curtain, but now faded to pink by sun. We never replaced it. Because some things should fade and still stay.Today was not a fashion show. Today was vow renewal. Second vow renewal — we did one every year as promised in Clause 4.1, but this year was special. Fifth year. And second baby.I was 33 years old. CEO Lane-Knight, $200M brand now, 120 employees, TIME cover twice. But today, I was just Sophia, 7 months pregnant again, in same red qipao from first wedding, but let out 3 inches at belly. Stella herself sewed the extra fabric — crooked stitch, but I wore it proudly.Stella was 5 years old now, not baby tyrant anymore, but mini-CEO tyrant. She had her own t

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Chloe Returns-Not As Enemy

One week after Stella's viral fall, I was in sewing room at 7 AM, alone, trying to fix Alexander's tux that ripped when he fell. The rip was small but it was right on butt — poetic.Door knocked. Not Maya's knock. Maya knocks like CEO — three fast. This knock was slow, scared."Come in."Door opened and Chloe stood there. She looked different. No Instagram makeup. Hair in ponytail, no extensions. She wore a plain white T-shirt, jeans that were not designer, and old sneakers. She held a small bag and a paper. And her belly. Her belly was big. 6 months pregnant, maybe 7.For a second, I thought I was seeing things. Last time I saw Chloe was at the copycat show, crying, wearing fake velvet."Can... can I come in?" she said, voice hoarse.I didn't say yes. I didn't say no. I just looked at her belly."How many months?" I asked."Seven," she whispered, hand automatically going to belly. "Seven months.""Whose?""Ethan's."The sewing room went silent. Only the clock ticking.Ethan. Of cours

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Stella's First Fashion Show

Stella was 6 months old and already a tyrant. She had three nannies quit in one month because she only wanted to be held by two people: me, and Alexander — but only when Alexander was wearing his soft grey sweater, not his suit. If he wore suit, she screamed like we were torturing her."She has taste," Alexander said proudly, throwing his $5,000 Tom Ford jacket on the floor and putting on the $40 grey sweater from Uniqlo that Stella liked. "She knows quality.""She knows you look less scary without suit," I said, trying to work on Spring collection while Stella tried to eat my charcoal pencil.Mom said, "Sophia, you need to take Stella out. She stays in office too much. She needs to see other babies."So I had an idea. A terrible, brilliant, GoodNovel-reader-will-love-it idea.Starlight Baby First Fashion Show. Not for adults. For babies. 20 babies from our staff, all wearing mini Starlight outfits sewn by me at 2 AM while breastfeeding. And the finale would be Stella — 6 months, 18 p
