Chapter 6

Penulis: Nameless
I was annoyed that the question in my mind didn't even have to be asked and flung the watch on the floor.

At this point, it was exactly what I wanted to do. "What am I to you, when you can't stop talking about Carl? Do you even have a brain, doing everything he says? If you find him that much better and 'different', then go out with him!"

Naomi frowned, her eyes flashing angrily. "Don't be so unreasonable! There's nothing between us—he's like a brother to me! And he's been kind enough to save our relationship, spending his precious time picking a gift for you!

"Forget not being grateful—you have to insult him?! When did you become like this?! It's like I don't know you anymore!"

I laughed. "I never changed. But you did, so I had to adapt. Also, should I be grateful? For what, driving us apart? If you even had a heart, you would remember that I hate green!"

Naomi was ready to argue but was cut short when her phone rang—it was a special ringtone instead of the default one, which she answered without hesitation.

Suddenly, her tone was very tender as she asked, "What's wrong, Carl… What! Alright, just calm down. I'm coming!"

As she hung up, she quickly explained, "Carl got a little feverish after having a drink—I need to go back and take care of him. Inform my parents on my behalf…"

She then paused and added coolly, "Also, I hope you will properly think about your behavior. The next time you come to Avon, I will bring you along to meet Carl and apologize."

I laughed and shot back, "So Carl had time to call you but not call an ambulance? It's a fever, not paralysis. Also, it takes another three hours to get back to Avon—you think you'd reach him faster than an ambulance?"

Naomi frowned at me with disgust like never before. "When did you become so repulsive?! Carl is a genius! That means he won't let just anyone see him being vulnerable, and it's all the more reason I should take care of him as his friend! Can't you be more understanding?!"

I laughed again, feeling tears in my eyes as never could I have expected to hear Naomi call me repulsive.

We had known each other for twenty years and had been together for six.

Somehow, none of that was worth mentioning compared to a person she had met barely a year ago.

I fought back my years as I picked up the box and shoved it into her hands. "Goodbye, Naomi."

I didn't want to see her ever again.

I listened quietly to Carl's hysterics and to Naomi coolly shifting the blame back on Carl, almost seeing echoes of how she lectured me back then.Shaking my head, I turned and headed to my bedroom.Flustered, Naomi caught me, completely forgetting that Carl was on the other end.Her gaze was nervous as she watched me as she virtually begged, "I-I've been meaning to ask… Can things go back to the way they were?"I lifted a brow, snatching her phone to hang up on Carl before I spoke to her again. "No, they can't. You know me, Naomi, and how much of a stickler I am with integrity. When you let Carl insult me without arguing at all back in Franconia, you know full well it was really over."-After spending the New Year at home, I returned to Avon early. That night had merely been a brief distraction that I never paid attention to, though I was informed over a month later that Naomi had broken up with Carl.On top of that, the reason was that Carl had been caught cheating during a

However, I didn't expect Naomi to be home too—and alone at that. The national team should usually be busy around the New Year for various events, so Naomi hadn't been back home for the New Year for years. She had changed a lot from how I remembered her—there was maturity, as if the pride of being a young prodigy had worn off.Once again, I nodded at her in greeting before leaving to help with preparing our families' celebrations. At dinner, she was left cold-shouldered as everyone else made merry, but there was no reason for me to make her feel included when her parents weren't doing that.I was heading straight for my room after that, but she intercepted me.Instead of immediately telling me what she wanted, she simply looked at me in silence with an emotion I couldn't quite gauge. It got so quiet that I could hear Wanda exclaiming 'Royal Flush' in delight downstairs, and Naomi finally asked, "How have you been, Andrew?"I nodded. "Pretty good. What about you?"Naomi pursed h

If anything, Steve and Alice were treating me like their own son, even getting standoffish against their actual daughter, Naomi.Squeezing Alice's hand in turn to convey my gratitude, I watched as Naomi pursed her lips awkwardly and quietly coaxed Carl back to his seat. When both of them tried their best to initiate conversations over food, my parents were simply silent, while Steve and Alice were as sarcastic as could be, finding issue in almost everything. As they kept playing up their roles as evil in-laws, Carl ultimately left, glowering. I had no idea how Carl or Naomi felt, but my parents and the Wilsons were in a fine mood, dragging me along to their poker table after filling their stomachs.I was almost unsurprised to see them whip out their usual deck of cards, but I eventually got bored staying with them and left for a stroll. Before long, I spotted Carl and Naomi fighting by the curb and regretted everything. And before I could turn to leave, Carl noticed me and rus

Steve pulled me aside too, rambling on and on to me and my father, his voice choking with tears.I tried to comfort Alice, while thinking to myself that Naomi was simply ridiculous, making me, the victim, comfort her own mother. However, Alice and Steve soon recovered and suggested a trip together.Since I hadn't unpacked, I simply brought everything along with me, leaving behind all the drama back home to enjoy the pleasures of our vacation. However, things really didn't go as planned—we had just covered much of the Osean continent and arrived in Franconia when we bumped into Naomi.Naturally, Carl the prodigy was with her.I only glanced at them once before turning away. After greeting her parents and mine, Naomi looked at me, hesitant to speak and appearing a little guilty.I simply nodded at her in greeting—it would always have been difficult to stay away completely from her when our parents were so close. And it was fine with me, since she could go about her business whil

I actually felt frustrated the last time I heard Naomi and Carl talk like that, but now, I simply found it amusing. What even was that? Bipolar drama?Hanging up right then, I sent Naomi a text instead. [I've made up my mind. Let's break up.]She seemed to be worried enough to call me repeatedly right after, so I simply turned my phone off.-Early next morning, my roommate nudged me while I was still asleep. "Wake up, man. Your girl… I mean, your ex is here."I peeked downstairs to see that Naomi really was standing there—heaven knew how she made the time to rush over.Sighing, I freshened up before going downstairs.I could personally tell her since she had traveled all this way. However, I had just arrived downstairs when Carl appeared out of nowhere, dragging Naomi toward the gates as he cried, "Let's just go back! He doesn't love you anymore—you don't have to waste your time here cheapening yourself! You'll break my heart!"I was disgusted and wasn't interested in bein

Steve and Alice were at my house when I returned, and they were surprised to see me alone. "Where's Naomi?"Pursing my lips, I played it cool as I told them, "The team just called. Something urgent came up."There was this sinister part of me that wanted to rat Naomi out.But I didn't do it—if her parents despised Carl even before they met him, he certainly wouldn't have a shot at winning their approval. Moreover, her business was none of mine from now on.Still, Alice was smiling wryly as she took my hand. "I apologize on behalf of my daughter, but don't worry—Steve and I are on your side. If she really screws you over, we will deal with her properly! "If you're really feeling insecure, why don't you kids get married after your graduation? I will make sure Naomi comes home and works at Steve's company instead of playing her silly games. She isn't young, and playing chess isn't the best of career choices."I smiled, shaking my head. "We're still young, and marriage isn't in the
