Chapter 3

作者: Rosemary
I floated to the window and watched the medical vehicle drive away with its lights flashing. No one knew I was already gone.

My phone lit up in my room. A message from my mentor. "Nova, you did not come to training today. Are you sick? Take care of yourself."

Sunlight came through the high window and fell on my worktable. A half-finished design was still spread out there. I had planned to pick up new materials today. I did not need them anymore.

My spirit followed my family to the medical center.

In the treatment room, Iris was given a sedative and finally calmed down. The healer checked her eyes. "Just a stress spike. No real frenzy. She should be fine after a night of rest."

"Thank the Moon." My mother fell into a chair and covered her face. My father put his hand on her shoulder and patted it twice. "It is okay. Iris will be fine."

I stood in front of them and wanted to scream. "Look at me! I am dead! Your older daughter is dead!"

But my voice could not reach the living world.

A nurse came in. "Do you want to register her for observation?"

"Yes." My father stood up right away. "What do we need to do?"

The nurse wrote on her pad. "Patient name is Iris Vance?"

"Yes."

"And the other one?" The nurse looked up. "The medics said there was another young person hurt at the scene."

My mother and father looked at each other. "Oh, you mean Nova?" My mother waved her hand. Her voice was not quite sure. "She is fine. She just bumped herself. She is resting at home."

The nurse nodded and did not ask again.

Iris turned on the bed and made a soft sound. My mother leaned in right away. "What is it? Does something hurt?"

"Nova…" Iris's voice was weak and small. "Nova wants to hurt me."

"Do not be scared. Mama is here." My mother stroked her hair, her voice soft as water. "Nova just knocked over the shelf by accident. She did not mean it."

"No!" Iris's voice got sharp and her claws started to darken again. "She meant it! She hates me! She always says I am dead weight and one day I will destroy this whole family!"

Her breathing got fast. The numbers on the monitor jumped up. The healer rushed in again.

I drifted into the corner and watched.

All my life, every time Iris cried out and pointed at me, my parents never really looked at me to check. They were always too busy calming her down.

“You know how she gets. Just let her have this one.”

“She is not herself when she is like this. You understand, right?”

“You are the older one. You are steady. You can take it.”

Even now, with me dead on the floor, their attention was still on her. It had always been on her.

My father's phone rang. He walked into the hallway to answer it. "Hello? Yes, this is Vance. What?"

His voice changed suddenly, like something had cracked open inside him.

"No… that is not possible." His voice was shaking. "Are you sure it is our house?"

The investigator on the other end spoke in a calm, even voice. "The initial report shows a young female. Cause of death appears to be internal bleeding from a ruptured organ. Estimated time of death is over three hours ago. Based on the scene and family information, we believe the deceased is your older daughter, Nova Vance."

Her words peeled away the last layer of skin. My father looked at the daughter he no longer recognized. His lips moved several times before he could speak. "Iris... how did you become like this?""Nova gave up so much for you. Why did you do this to her?"Iris laughed coldly. "Gave up? She chose that herself. She hated me. She hated that I took your attention away from her.""She hated me, so why should I not hate her?""I did not kill her. She lost her balance and hit the table. What does that have to do with me?"My mother's hand slipped off my father's shoulder. She looked at Iris like she was seeing her face for the first time. She opened her mouth, closed it, and turned away.Iris was sent to the frenzy isolation facility. There, she found that no one believed her anymore. She tried to tell the guards that the other residents were hurting her. No one listened. She damaged the training equipment and tried to blame someone else. No one believed her. She even tried biting herself at

More people who had known me began to speak. The comments on Iris's posts no longer leaned so heavily in her favor. She was starting to panic. But what truly broke everything open was an unexpected find.In an old storage shed at the edge of the territory, someone clearing out discarded forging equipment found a memory card. It contained footage from a long time ago, recorded in Iris's own room. She must have forgotten to turn it off, or thought she had deleted it.The footage showed her alone. She smashed a cup, used a shard to cut her own hand, then ran out crying to find our parents. She sat on her bed and practiced her crying face in the mirror, trying three different expressions before she found the one that looked most convincing. She poured her suppressant down the sink and told our parents Nova had done it. She scratched marks into the wall and screamed, claiming Nova had set her off on purpose. Every piece of "evidence" had been made by her own hands. When the footage was conf

"Maybe she did love me, deep down. She just hated me so much she could not control it."My parents were quiet for a long time. My father let out a slow breath. My mother pulled Iris a little closer. Only someone who had truly been hurt, they thought, could feel so torn. Love and hate. Fear and longing. They believed it.I watched my sister's performance and felt a coldness that went through my bones. The real problem was never her frenzy sickness. It was the story she had built around it, the story she had kept going until everyone believed it. She had soaked up all the attention, all the sympathy, all the "you have been through so much." I was just the stepping stone she used to get it.Word spread fast. At the training grounds, people said, "So that is what was really going on. The older sister was provoking the sick one the whole time.""She seemed so quiet. Turns out she was cruel.""I used to feel bad for her. Now it looks like she was the one doing the damage.""The younger siste

"This is the medicine my sister gave me," Iris said, her voice soft and fragile. "She said it would help me feel better. But I had someone check it. It has sedatives in it."The Guard took the bottle. His expression darkened. My father was brought into another room. "Mr. Vance, your daughter has made some claims about your older daughter. I need to verify them with you."My father glanced at Iris. She threw herself into his arms, her voice shaking. "Dad, I am so scared. Sister she...""What?" My father held her tight, his brow furrowed. "What are you saying?""Dad, sister has been tormenting me." Iris buried her face in his chest, her shoulders heaving. "She did not learn forging because she liked it. She learned it to hurt me.""She knew the sound of metal would trigger my episodes. She would practice right next to me, over and over, as loud as she could.""She wanted to watch me break. She hated me. She wanted me to lose control completely and get locked away."My father's face went

"We need to talk about your other daughter." The Guard shifted topics. "According to training records, Iris does have frenzy sickness, but the frequency and severity of her episodes are within manageable limits. Why was your household so on edge?""Impossible!" My father cut him off. "Iris's condition is severe! The healer said she could lose control at any moment! We have to watch her around the clock!"The Guard slid a document across the table. "This is the latest evaluation for your younger daughter. In fact, her symptoms have been stable for quite some time under medication. Your older daughter, on the other hand..."My father took the document blankly. When he saw the words "Condition stable. Recommend gradual reduction of supervision," his pupils contracted. "This report is from last month," the Guard said flatly. "You never saw it?"My father's lips trembled. "Iris's primary healer always told us her condition was still dangerous...""Which healer?""The one at the central medi

"Today I was locked in the storage room again. They said I was worthless baggage. I did not fight back. I was afraid Iris would hear the noise...""My father sighed at me again today. He said I should not practice grinding near Iris. I really did not mean to... Sometimes I wish I was sick like Iris. Then they would hold me too."The last entry was from yesterday. Only one sentence. "So tired. If I disappear one day, will anyone even notice?"My father's knees hit the floor. The notebook slipped from his hands. His back bent like a hollow shell. My mother crawled over and picked it up. She read one page and broke down crying."What have we done..." My father's voice was shattered. The Guard watched in silence. He nodded to his colleague. "Mr. Vance, you are being detained on suspicion of negligent homicide."In the interview room, my father sat motionless. "Based on the scene and the healer's report, your daughter died from internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma." The Guard push
