Chapter 3

مؤلف: Lynn Green
My fingers went still, and a chill ran through me.

After I failed to respond, Mark seemed to realize something was wrong.

He texted, "Never mind. It's too much of a hassle to go looking this late. I'm heading home."

I wiped at the corner of my eye and forced myself to calm down.

Then I slowly typed back, "Okay. I'll wait for you. We can finish this when you get back."

Half an hour later, I heard a key turn in the lock. Mark walked in with Rachel right behind him.

As he took off his shoes, he said matter-of-factly, "It's too late to get food anywhere, and Rachel hasn't eaten because she was working. I brought her over so I could make her some pasta."

I didn't buy it, but he seemed to think that was explanation enough. He headed straight into the kitchen.

Rachel and I were alone in the living room.

She broke the silence. "I never would've guessed Mr. Foster was so thoughtful outside of work. He's always so decisive and businesslike at the office, but he even cooks."

I wasn't in the mood to make conversation, so I just nodded. That was all the encouragement she needed.

"Mr. Foster has always looked out for me. Once, I entered the wrong figures for a project, and everyone wanted me held accountable. He took responsibility for the whole thing and helped me revise the proposal from start to finish.

"Another time, I missed a flight on a business trip, and he rearranged the work schedule and rebooked my travel for me."

I had already heard about both incidents, but hearing her recount them made every word sting. I kept my expression neutral and let her talk.

Rachel looked surprised that I hadn't reacted. Clearly, she wasn't done trying to get a rise out of me. When she spoke again, she made no effort to hide it.

"One night, Mr. Foster and I stayed late to finish an urgent project. We were the only ones left on the entire floor. It was freezing, and he was worried I'd get cold, so he gave me his blanket and spent the rest of the night freezing instead."

My heart sank.

"I remember thinking that if Mr. Foster were my boyfriend, I'd marry him on the spot."

Just then, Mark came out of the kitchen carrying two bowls of pasta and caught the end of her comment. He stopped short, his face tightening.

"That's enough, Rachel," he said sharply.

Even he knew she had crossed a line. He looked at me as if he wanted to explain, but I turned away and changed the subject before he could.

"Let's eat," I said evenly.

Mark watched me for a moment. I gave nothing away. Though he looked like he wanted to say something, he held back.

He eventually composed himself and spoke quietly. "You barely ate dinner, so you must be hungry. I made some for you too. Eat before it gets cold."

He set both bowls of pasta on the table. Mine had exactly as many meatballs as Rachel's.

As the meal went on, Mark and Rachel chatted easily about work. They moved from office problems to project updates and upcoming plans, none of which Mark had ever shared with me.

As Rachel talked, it was obvious that he admired her and valued what she had to say. He had never looked at me that way.

I sat beside them in silence, rolling a meatball back and forth through the sauce with my fork. I never took a bite.

When their conversation about work finally ended, the living room fell silent. Mark turned to me at last and offered an explanation for what Rachel had said.

"The heat went out that night, and Rachel was on her period and wasn't feeling well. I'm her supervisor, so of course I made sure she was okay."

He paused before adding, "Don't get the wrong idea."

"I didn't."

He frowned again. That clearly wasn't the answer he wanted.

After a moment, he said, "It's late. I'll take Rachel home first. It's not safe for her to get home by herself at this hour. Whatever you wanted to talk about can wait until I get back."

So now he was worried about safety.

I had worked late more nights than I could count and had asked him to pick me up before. But he had always insisted I go home alone, all because he was afraid someone might see us together.

I simply nodded. "Okay."

Over the past two years, Mark had continued to visit me occasionally. He usually kept his distance. Sometimes, he came over to talk for a few minutes, but he was always calm and never brought up getting back together.I nodded without much reaction. "Thank you."Mark regarded me seriously. "I regained control of the company and became a shareholder. We also sued Rachel for leaking trade secrets and harming the company."She's been blacklisted throughout the industry, so she won't be making a comeback."He went on to tell me how his life had changed, but all I said was, "I see." I felt nothing. None of it mattered to me anymore.Mark looked disappointed for a moment, but quickly regained his composure. "Erin, it's been two years. I know you've moved on, but I haven't. Could we get back together?"It was the first time in two years that he had asked. Before I could answer, a voice spoke up nearby. "Sorry, Mr. Foster, but I'm already trying to win Erin over. You'll have to get in

I went on. "But after I left, I realized I didn't need you to be happy. I can pursue my own dreams, live life on my own terms, and finally feel calm and free. It feels good."I looked at Mark, finally at peace. "I've moved on, and I'm not going back. Those ten years feel like a dream now, and I've finally woken up. It's time for us to go our separate ways and live our own lives."The last of his hope gave way to despair as he took in how calm I was. He finally understood that he had truly lost me.He wanted to explain himself and beg me to take him back. But when he met my calm gaze, the words wouldn't come. For the next month, Mark stayed in the city.He rented a place near campus and followed me everywhere. He waited outside my classroom, sat nearby while I studied at the library, and kept his distance whenever I had dinner with my classmates. He never bothered me. He just stayed close enough to watch as I settled into my new life and grew more confident and at ease.Eventuall

I looked up and saw Mark. He sat across from me, his gaze fixed on my face, his expression full of conflicting emotions. We had only been apart for a few days, and I looked much as I always had. My expression was still gentle, but he could tell that something had changed. It was the way I looked at him. The hurt was gone, along with my need for his reassurance. All he saw now was calm detachment. That detachment unnerved him more than any accusation could have."What are you doing here?" I asked, as if he no longer mattered to me.Mark felt a sharp ache in his chest, and his throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but suddenly had no idea where to begin. After a few seconds, he finally managed to speak. "Erin, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong. I really do. I've been selfish all these years. I cared more about my reputation and my career than I did about your feelings."I hurt you again and again, and it was all my fault."He looked at me, his expression pleading. "Pleas

Mark fumbled for his phone, pulled up my number, and called again. His pulse quickened as he waited for me to answer. He didn't care how cold or distant I sounded. He just needed to hear my voice. But an automated voice answered instead, "The number you have dialed is busy. Please try again later."He hesitated, thinking it might be a bad connection, then tried again. He got the same message. After more than a dozen attempts, the truth became impossible to deny.I had blocked him. Before boarding my flight, I had made sure he had no way to contact me.Mark slumped back against the couch, devastated. He sat in silence for a long time before pulling a velvet ring box from his pocket. He opened it. Inside was a simple but elegant diamond ring. The stone wasn't large, but it caught the light. As he looked down at it, there was no hiding the pain and regret in his eyes.He had been holding on to the ring for a long time. His plan had always been to propose when I became director and

In the past, Mark would have quietly moved out of Rachel's reach without embarrassing her in front of everyone. This time, her touch made his skin crawl. He pulled away before she could take his arm and gave her a cold look."Ms. Lynch, that's inappropriate. Whatever help I gave you was strictly work-related and nothing more. Don't mistake it for something it wasn't, and don't touch me like that again."The office filled with startled whispers.Rachel's smile vanished. She stared at him, stunned that he would shut her down so harshly in front of everyone.Mark didn't look at her again. He only wanted to find me. He turned and hurried out of the office. He sped home, gripping the steering wheel, his heart pounding. He tried to convince himself Emma was wrong. I was probably at home, angry with him.But the moment he opened the front door, he knew. The house was cold and empty. Every sign that I had ever lived there was gone.My shoes were missing from the entryway closet. My sid
