Chapter 3 Argument

Author: The Handsome Guy
The door swung shut, and I picked up the stained pregnancy report and tossed it into the bin. When he stepped on it, my heart shuddered. The last sliver of hope I had for him disappeared.

He did not come back that night. Instead, he texted, "It's too late, so I won't disturb you. I'll be back at the Riverson Residence tomorrow."

Three years ago, he had once taken a flight that lasted more than ten hours just to come back and wish me a happy birthday. Now, he had forgotten to come home. He had forgotten it was my birthday, and his excuse was that it was too late.

I turned the phone off and massaged my heaving chest. Tears drenched my pillow.

…

The next day, I handed in my resignation letter at the firm.

The owner was surprised. "If you leave, Ms. Shaw becomes the firm's partner. Are you sure? And does Mr. Riverson know?"

"Of course." I only joined the firm because I loved Yves. The position did not matter.

Now that the love was gone, I could throw everything else away too.

…

At eleven o'clock, I arrived at the Riverson Residence. Yves was at the entrance, but not because he was waiting for me.

He stopped me from going in. "Samantha wants to see what it feels like to have dinner with a family, so don't go in."

I was stunned. "But I'm your wife."

"And her best friend. Her cat just died, and she's depressed. She only got better after coming here. Put yourself in her shoes."

I did that plenty enough. My house was filled with traces of her. She had her bedroom, her favorite bedding, and the flower Yves gave her lived on our balcony. I pretended not to be bothered, even when she gave him razors, aftershave, and even underwear behind my back.

I pretended not to know, but that did not mean I had to tolerate this forever. I had tolerated enough.

Yves went away, but the door was still open. I noticed the presents I picked sitting beside the main table, but now Samantha was the one giving them away like she picked them herself.

My mother-in-law's laughter came from the antechamber. "I wish Yves married Samantha. She's likable, unlike Melinda. She spends all her time working like our family needs it."

Samantha smiled. "Guess I'm just not lucky enough."

"And Melinda's not either. Three years and not even a child to show for it."

Yves did not defend me. He stayed quiet and peeled the seafood for Samantha. From where I stood, I could see the side of his face—tender and filled with a smile.

Samantha had a sweet smile on her face too. That was the smile she had every time she would win a case in court.

This time, what she won was my family. My man.

…

When I got home, her apology text came. "I had no idea he would stop you from coming in, Melinda. It's okay. I yelled at him. He swore he'd never do anything that stupid again. Don't fight on my account."

I stared at the apology.

My stomach was empty, yet it churned with disgust. I was reminded of my senior introducing a VIP client to me last year, but Yves made that client Samantha's when it was time to file it.

I argued with him, and after that, a crying Samantha came to apologize. "All I did was bring it up casually. I didn't think he'd remember it. I just yelled at him and told him to stop meddling, but he wouldn't listen."

That apology was more disgusting than anything in life.

It was twelve when he came home.

He smelled like flowers and was holding a paper bag. He noticed me on the couch and frowned. "You're still up."

I looked at him. "I was waiting for you."

He changed his shoes and walked past me, then he handed me the paper bag. "I bought some snacks while I was taking Samantha home. She didn't finish it, so here you go."

I raised my eyebrow. "You're giving me her leftovers?"

His frown twisted his forehead. "Is it that time of the month again? You're being awfully sarcastic."

Even now he still thought I was in the wrong. "Because you haven't sorted out your priorities. I'm your wife, but you stopped me from going in while bringing my 'best friend' to the main table."

I was holding a glass, and my hand shivered with rage.

"It's just a seat, and she's not a stranger. Look at you. Jealous, narrow-minded, and petty. You don't look anything like a lawyer. If this is what you're really like, I should've married Samantha instead!"

His eyes dimmed, and hurt flickered across his face."I'm a past chapter, but Samantha is standing behind you. I don't want any unnecessary misunderstandings to arise."Yves smiled as if relieved. Then he grabbed my hand and took me to a quiet spot. He looked at me, his eyes speaking of something urgent."I can explain. We're innocent. I made it clear to her the day you left. I know she kept provoking you behind my back. I didn't make her a partner, and I didn't give her the clients you worked hard to get. The bedroom's changed into a nursery. I even tossed that razor into the bin."See? He knew I was bothered by all of that, but he never cared. He only did everything after I was gone, as if this could repair things. He thought saying sorry could turn back time and repair our marriage. The more he said, the quieter his voice went, and a pained look crept onto his face. His eyes went red. "I wanted to come after you the very next day, but they told me to give you time, so I waited.

Two years went by. I secured another total victory for an international merger case. All the reporters were standing outside the courthouse."Ms. Samson, we heard the opposing lawyer is your former best friend. How does it feel to face your former best friend in court?"I stood before the cameras and put on a professional smile. "I'm sorry, but I won't be answering any questions unrelated to the case." I looked at my assistant. My assistant took over immediately. "If you want to know more about the case, come with me."The crowd gradually dispersed, leaving only me and Yves standing face to face. He was dressed in a suit.Behind him stood Samantha, her eyes filled with resentment and jealousy."You must be proud after winning the case. Now Oceaton knows your name. Happy now?"Her face was twisted. I thought time really was the key to seeing people's true colors.Without pure passion, no one could steadfastly keep learning law, not when fame and fortune tempted them."I am happ

I turned to look at the man I had known since I was twenty-two. It was hard not to fall in love with him. He was handsome, came from a good family, and had a gentle smile, especially when he wore glasses.During our blind date, he told me he was dating with marriage in mind. He was open about all the wealth he had, yet he never once brought up a prenuptial agreement. After we got married, his mother tried to make me quit my job, but he supported my career. He said, "She's only married to me, not turned into my appendage. She has her own preferences and dreams. I support her."He made me his wife, gave me status, and provided me with a good life, but three years after the wedding, he started lying to me.I was taken back to that night. He did not just step on the pregnancy report, but also our marriage. He had split us into two different worlds. I endured the pain and took a few deep breaths. Then I met his regret-filled gaze.Weakly, I said, "Fine…" Then I turned to my side and

The air itself felt thinner. The sun was shining brightly outside, bright enough for me to see the shock and confusion on his face. Yves' eyes went wide, as if someone was choking him. He could not even make a sound. It was just like the day of the plane incident. I was in the neighboring seat, and I saw him flinging my hand away just to reach for the royal blue razor in his suitcase. Then he held on to it tightly.Even when it was life or death, he did not hold my hand or look at me. His hand was wrapped around the razor Samantha gave him.The first thing he did after we landed was call her.A long while later, he found the strength to speak. "Why?" Then, he crumpled to the ground. For that moment, he was not the heir to the Riversons or the shareholder of Melphon Law Firm. He was just a pitiful man who just found out he could have been a father, only for that to be robbed from him.I looked at his abject disappointment and smiled. "You tried to kill me for Samantha, and yo

Yves thought it was a joke. "What do you mean abortion?"The nurse hated cheating jerks like him, so she slammed the surgery report into his arms. "See for yourself!"He took a look and froze. His eyes widened as his gaze locked onto the word 'abortion.' For a moment, he was petrified. Then, he looked at the nurse with confusion."Are you sure? My wife isn't pregnant. She can't have an abortion.""You've never come with her during her checkups. Of course you don't know she was pregnant. She found out a week ago, and she was two months pregnant. You call yourself her husband when you know nothing? And you took her blood for another woman! The richer they are, the worse a man gets."The nurse stormed away, leaving the pale Yves behind.…"Mrs. Riverson? Mrs. Riverson?" A gentle voice woke me. I opened my eyes and saw nothing but blinding white. I narrowed my eyes, feeling uncomfortable. Hoarsely, I asked, "Is the surgery over?"The doctor nodded. He had a mask on. Gently, he said

Dead silence fell over the living room. Only his heavy breathing remained. "Reflect on yourself!" he roared. A moment later, the sound of his car engine revving came from downstairs. I held my stomach and leaned on the wall as I slid down to the ground. I stayed there a long, long time.…I woke up early in the morning and went to the OBGYN department.Soon after, I was lying in the operating theater. As the anaesthesia slowly flowed into my body, a voice echoed in my mind."There are two rooms facing south, Melinda. One is ours, and the other's the nursery. Riveropolis is cold and humid. I want you to wake up warmed up by the sun. I've come up with a dozen names for the baby. See what you like."We just got married, and I had no plans of having a baby. He had already bought all the baby stuff and filled the nursery with them. After I lectured him, he said he would respect my wishes and wait until I grew tired of focusing on my career before we had a child.Eventually, that nu
