Chapter 2

Author: Teresa
“Don’t worry.”

But that night, Francis kicked the door of my ward down.

Melanie was standing behind him. She wore an odd smile.

Francis looked gloomy as he dragged me out of the hospital bed.

“Scarlett, I kindly came to the hospital to see you tonight. But you made someone prick me using the syringe used by an AIDS patient. How could you do that to me?!”

Disbelief filled me. My entire body was bandaged. I wondered why he would mistake Melanie for me.

Before I had time to ponder it, Francis had already dragged me out of bed. He gloomily fished out a syringe used by an AIDS patient and tried to stab me with it. But he failed to do so when he saw my teary eyes.

Hope rose in me. Maybe, he still trusted me.

However, he lazily waved. “Throw her into a pool of alcohol. She needs to learn her lesson.”

My body was filled with stab wounds from the needles. Hence, the pool was soon dyed red by my blood.

Melanie looked at me smugly while holding a bottle of sulfuric acid.

“Do you think Frank will blame me if I pour sulfuric acid into the pool, Scarlett?”

I gnashed my teeth. “What have you done?”

Melanie looked at me naively. “What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”

Talia Smith, my mother, pounced on me to block the sulfuric acid before it splashed on my face.

Talia fell to the floor because of the pain, but she still braced herself and caressed my face. “I’m here. You don’t have to be scared…”

She fainted in the next moment.

David Smith, my father, and Frank hurriedly drove Talia to the emergency room. Melanie threw me a disgusted look.

“It’s not over yet! Just you wait!”

I ignored my pain and hurried to the emergency room.

Excruciating pain gripped me when I heard Talia’s piteous cries from inside.

Talia weakly searched for me. “Where’s Lottie?”

I was about to rush over, but Melanie fiercely dragged me to the side.

She was wearing a mask and a hospital gown similar to mine. She lowered her head and rushed into Talia’s embrace.

David and Talia hugged her and comforted her.

“It’s fine, Lottie. It’s not your fault…”

But their voices grew softer, and a dazed look came over them.

Melanie turned around and smiled at me.

“Mom, Scarlett is over the line! How could she try to splash sulfuric acid at me?”

David and Talia seemed to have just snapped back to reality. They firmly hugged Melanie.

“Don’t be scared, Mel! We’ll disown her right away! You’re our only daughter. We won’t forgive anyone who hurts you!”

I stood at the door. I was at a complete loss when Francis abruptly kicked me to the floor.

He gripped my hair and dragged me to Talia’s bed. He said fiercely, “Get down on your knees!”

I looked at my parents, but they averted their gazes.

Melanie whispered, “Frank, Scarlett pressed my head into the pool of alcohol just now. My head hurts so badly…”

David slapped me hard before scowling at me.

“You’re my biological daughter, Scarlett! Why are you this wicked?! Get lost! From now on, you are cut off from my family!”

I wanted to deny it, but Melanie suddenly spoke up.

“But everything she’s wearing belongs to the Smith family. If we want to cut her off, shouldn’t she…”

I looked at Talia. I was trembling, but she was caressing Melanie’s head, trying to comfort her.

“You have to bear the consequences after doing something wrong, Scarlett.”

An extreme pain overcame me. I bit my lip and took off my coat. “Is this okay?”

Melanie snorted. “Scarlett, you have to take everything off.”

My parents and brother kept silent. I shakily unbuttoned my shirt and put it on the floor. When I was about to take off my innerwear, Frank shouted, “Forget it. I don’t want people saying that we’re harsh! Get lost!”

I turned to walk out of the ward. But when I exited the hospital, a group of reporters rushed toward me with excitement.

“Miss Scarlett, I heard that the Smith family has disowned you. May I know if it’s because they found out that you’d harmed Miss Melanie?”

“Miss Scarlett, do you regret what you’ve done?”

The camera lights were on me, and I had no way out.

At that time, someone draped a jacket over me.

“Get in the car. Leave the rest to me. Nothing is what you think it is.”

Francis held my hand to give me some comfort. “It’s fine. I’ll be with you.”In the end, a blue light appeared out of thin air in the glass tube. Then, Melanie collapsed. An officer clad in a jacket smiled at my father and nodded. “It’s over now. This power doesn’t belong to our world, and we’ve extracted it. We’ll perform some research on it afterward. Thank you for reporting this.”I heaved a sigh of relief and felt relaxed. David could finally look at me. He cried. “Lottie… It must have been very hard on you…”Sunlight shone in from the glass window. At that moment, I felt fine and secure for the first time after my rebirth. The staff members took Melanie away and examined her body. They found that a lot of her internal organs were decaying. It might be a direct consequence of using the system.I had forgiven my family. Things had gone back to normal between us. I still felt that my life was full of love and happiness. But I still had no idea how to face Henry. I once lo

“Lottie, I’m sorry for making you suffer so much…”“It’s okay, Frank. It’s fine as long as you guys aren’t still being fooled and we’re not separated. How should we tackle Melanie’s system?” I looked at him with worry.“I’m terrified that you guys might be careless and get fooled again. Then, will we end up like we did in our previous lives?” Francis patted my back to comfort me. “It’ll be fine. Dad has contacted the people specially in charge of this kind of thing. You don’t have to worry.”“Okay.” I was finally feeling relieved in Francis’s arms. Exhaustion overwhelmed me at that moment. It had felt like I was a lonely boat in a large ocean, constantly drifting. I could not let down my guard because of the waves. Finally, I found land and reached the shore. I had to get some rest.Hence, I dozed off into a sound sleep. When I woke up, I saw Talia. She had dozed off beside my bed. Her back was bandaged tightly, but I could still smell some rotten flesh. It was the result of

Francis leaned against the doorframe. He was still wearing the clothes he had worn the day before and smelled like disinfectant. It was clear that he had come right after leaving the hospital. He stood at the door to watch over me.He was sleeping soundly, but he firmly blocked the door as if he were afraid that something might barge into the room to hurt me.Yes, they loved me. After pondering over that question for the entirety of the previous night, I finally had my answer. Certainly, I was hurt, but I was loved, too. If my memories were tampered with and if I was betrayed, I wondered if I could be rational. I wondered if I could still trust myself. No one could do that. I opened the door, and Francis immediately opened his eyes vigilantly. He quickly leaped off the floor and turned around. The alertness and fierceness in his eyes disappeared the moment he saw me. All that was left was guilt and tenderness.“Lottie, how are you feeling now? I was wrong. How could I have lost

Francis could only let me go after coming up with the excuse of needing to safeguard the family’s reputation. They even asked Henry to pick me up. Once I was out of Melanie’s sight, he would immediately drive me to a safe place. But unexpectedly, Melanie was very wicked. She was not satisfied with only making me take off my clothes. She even asked some reporters to wait at the entrance to ruin my reputation. Luckily, Henry came in time and saved me in the end. I was sipping hot chocolate in Jordan Villa. The steam from the drink made my eyes warm.At the same time, I was listening to Henry talking about their plan. He also exposed his worry and regret.“Lottie, I’m sorry. I’m a bad guy! I didn’t trust you, and that bad system tampered with my memories. I thought you were a disloyal and bad woman. I thought you’d been lying to me! I… didn’t want to hurt you. But I was forced to hurt you just to pacify Melanie. “She stabbed you with the needles, and I felt them in my heart. The

“We can make Melanie feel that everything is going as planned. We need to fool her first. Then, we’ll send Lottie someplace safe before we come up with a way to tackle Melanie. “Henry, you have to act ignorant and pretend that your memories have been changed. Do what Melanie wants you to do. Let’s find out how she tampers with our memories!” “But it’ll harm Lottie! What should we do if she doesn’t forgive us?” “But we have no choice. Do you want to watch Lottie die again?” After a long silence, Henry finally nodded and agreed to the plan. Thus, he could only obey Melanie and abuse me. But he was suffering when he saw me in pain on the floor. He became very anxious that he almost rushed forward. But he forcefully held himself back.If he had given up at that time, all the pain that I had suffered would have been futile. He could not let all the effort go to waste and let me suffer for nothing. When Melanie got to her feet, Henry immediately got a bodyguard to act like a p

Melanie waited in the hospital anxiously and kept refreshing her phone. But still, she failed to see the news she wanted.“How annoying! Shouldn’t that horrid woman’s naked photo be trending now? What are those reporters doing? How slow can they be?!”She texted the reporters with irritation, but none of them texted her back. “How dare they take the money and fail to get it done?! I can’t believe that Scarlett was driven away that easily. I can’t accept it. I want to torture her more! I must make her fall from grace. That’s the only way I can secure my position in the family!”David, Talia, and Francis looked at her gloomily in the ward behind her.Talia asked with a shaky voice, “How’s Lottie doing?”Francis nodded. “Henry has already picked her up.”“My poor daughter…” Talia could not hold back her tears. The Smith family inexplicably had the same dream a week ago. They dreamed that Melanie had a mysterious system. They did something wrong consecutively under the power of
