It was just a moment of impulse, Veronica, don't take it to heart. She's your sister after all. She's scared you'll take her place once you return.

That's what my mother said.

My own biological mother, Margaret Weston, side-hugging the already crying Tiffany.

In front of all 20 guests.

The same mother who lost me at age 4 in a supermarket, who spent 18 years putting my missing poster on milk cartons, who told the press "my heart has a hole the shape of Veronica."

Now her arm was around the fake.

Tiffany sobbed harder into my mother's Chanel. Perfect, practiced sobs. "I didn't mean it, Mommy! I was just scared! I wrote that when I was emotional! Sister, I'm sorry!"

My father, Robert, cleared his throat. "Veronica. Your sister has been with us for 18 years. She is... sensitive. You have to understand, you just came back. This family has a balance. Don't break it on the first day."

Balance.

He meant: Don't make us choose. Because if we have to choose, we will choose the daughter who has been making us look good at charity galas for 18 years, not the one who just showed up with a Richard Mille and an attitude.

Ethan, my little brother, looked at me. He was angry for me. He opened his mouth—

I stopped him with a look. No. Let them show me who they are.

I sat down. Picked up my fork. Cut my steak.

"You're right, Mom," I said calmly.

Margaret smiled, relieved. Tiffany peeked at me through her fake tears, thinking she won.

"She IS my sister," I continued, chewing slowly. "And she IS scared I'll take her place. Which is why she kept her dresses in MY closet, kept her diary under MY mattress, and wrote about how she'll make you send me back where I came from."

I looked at my mother straight in the eyes. The same eyes as mine.

"But Mom, let me ask you one thing. When you lost me 18 years ago, did you tell the police 'it was just a moment of impulse, don't take it to heart, the supermarket is scared?' Or did you look for me?"

My mother's face went pale.

"When Tiffany wrote 'she won't last a week' — that's not impulse. That's a plan. You raised her for 18 years and never taught her that writing plans to destroy your biological daughter is wrong? Or you did, but she didn't listen because she never had a single consequence in her entire spoiled life?"

Tiffany screamed, "I SAID I'M SORRY!"

I finally stood up, pushed my chair back. The loud screech made everyone jump.

"No. You said 'sorry' because you got caught. There's a difference."

I picked up her diary from the table and dropped it into her lap.

"Keep your apartment. You don't need to move out. This house has 12 bedrooms. You can stay. After all, guests are supposed to stay in the guest room, right? And my room is MY room now.

Every words hit them like a bullet. Then.

I turned to my parents.

"And Mom, Dad — don't worry. I'm not here to take her place. You can't take a place that was never yours. I'm here to take MY place. The one you left empty for 18 years. If that scares her, maybe she should be scared."

I walked upstairs.

Behind me, I heard Ethan say loudly, "Mom, you messed up. Big time."

And I heard Tiffany whisper to my mother, "See? See how mean she is? She hates me!"

But my mother didn't answer right away this time.

That pause — that one second of silence from Margaret Weston — was my first real win in this house.

Monday came faster than I expected.I opened my eyes, yawned, and stretched my bones lazily before dragging myself into the bathroom to wash up.By the time I picked up my phone, there were 50 missed calls from my parents and a dozen messages.I was added to the family group chat, the chat that had no place for me before, I was now part of. I didn't answer any of them. I didn't reply to a single message. I just tossed the phone on the bed and put on a white Laurent suit — not a dress. A suit. Sharp blazer, tailored pants, hair tied back. The same suit my adopted mother Sophia wore when she took over her first company at twenty three. My adopted father, Julian, was already in the dining room with lawyers. Five of them."Morning, princess," he said, sliding a cup of coffee toward me. "Weston Enterprises board meeting is at 9 AM. You own 51%. You can fire them all if you want.""I don't want to fire them, not now I said, taking a sip. "I want them to watch me take over the company they

I didn't need Ace. I wanted him for my performance tonight and he served his purpose. The moment we walked out of the ballroom doors, with all 300 guests still frozen inside, I let go of his hand. Ace looked down at his empty hand, surprised. No woman has ever let go of Ace Moore first. "That's it?" he said. "That's it," I said. "Thank you for the dance, Ace. You were the perfect prop." My adopted parents, Julian and Sophia, were already waiting in the car. My Mom was grinning ear to ear. Ethan leaned on the car door, arms crossed looking at me standing with Ace his eyes cold but I could see a faint smile on his lips. "Prop?" Ace repeated. He almost laughed. "You used the wealthiest man in the city as a prop?" He asked in disbelief. His eyes looking at me like something interesting was standing in front of him. "I used the fiancé my parents tried to give to a fake as a prop," I corrected. "There's a difference. You were supposed to be my arranged marriage. Tonight you

Even I laughed at that. Watching Tiffany cry in her red dress while the whole ballroom clapped for me — I laughed. Inside. A cold, quiet laugh. I was just getting started. Since they favored her over me — my own biological parents who hugged her when I showed them her diary, who tried to give my fiancé to her, who told me "don't take it to heart" — since they favored her, I will take everything. And drive them to desperation. The dance with Ace ended. He didn't let go of my hand. "Veronica," my mother Margaret came rushing, finally, with open arms. "My daughter—" I stepped back. "Don't," I said. "You had your chance to hug me this morning. You hugged her instead. You don't get to hug the winner now." Margaret's eyes filled with tears. Real ones this time. Robert looked away, ashamed. "Veronica, we—" "No. Save it for tomorrow's newspapers." I turned to the host and took his mic one last time. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming. Tonight was supposed to b

The gala — part 2 Ace kissing my hand was louder than any announcement Robert Weston had planned. The entire ballroom froze. Phones came out. Flashes. Whispers. Tiffany's red dress suddenly looked cheap. Robert Weston tried to save it. He grabbed the mic from me, laughing too loud. "Haha! Young love! Yes, as I was saying — Tiffany and Ace have been childhood friends, and we are so happy to—" "No." Ace said it. One word. No mic, but everyone heard it because the room was so quiet. He let go of my hand and stepped to the microphone. He looked at Robert, then at Margaret, then at Tiffany. "Mr. Weston, with respect. The engagement contract signed 22 years ago between the Moores and the Westons was between your _biological_ daughter and my family. Not your adopted daughter. My father is old-fashioned. Blood matters to him." Tiffany started shaking. "Ace... what are you... we grew up together... you promised to dance with me..." Ace didn't even look at her. Cold. That's why he's t

  • The Real Heiress Return    Chapter 6 the night of the gala

The night of the gala. The Weston Estate had been turned into a palace. Crystal chandeliers, 300 guests, cameras, champagne towers, every rich family in the city. And in the center, like a queen on a cake — Tiffany. Red dress. Diamond choker that was supposed to be mine. Hair curled perfect. She stood next to my biological parents, Margaret and Robert, smiling, waving, touching every wife's hand. "Thank you for coming! Yes, I'm so excited for tonight's announcement!" She kept looking at the entrance, waiting for Ace. My parents kept looking at the stairs, waiting for me. Margaret had sent three maids to tell me to wear the blue dress Tiffany picked. I had locked my door. Ethan texted me: _Where are you? Tiffany told everyone you're too scared to come down because you have no manners for a gala._ I smiled. Typed back: _Tell them to dim the lights._ Downstairs, the host tapped his glass. "Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the Weston 20th Annual Charity Gala! Tonight is extra sp

  • The Real Heiress Return    Chapter five The gala

I smiled this time, a real one. Because I have a whole army behind me and Tiffany was too small for this game. She thinks she's playing house. She has no idea she's playing war. That night, Ethan slipped a crumpled invitation under my door. I opened it. *WESTON CHARITY GALA - 20th Anniversary* _Special Announcement: The Future of the Weston Family_ I knew exactly what they wanted to use the gala for. My mother Margaret had told me on the phone before I even came back: "Veronica, you had an arranged engagement since you were a baby. With the Moore family. Their son Ace. He's the wealthiest man in the city now. He's 26. Handsome. He waited." But downstairs, I heard Tiffany on the phone giggling to her friend, "Ace said he'll dance with me first at the gala. Mommy said if Veronica doesn't fit in, the engagement will be mine. After all, I've been his friend since we were kids." So that's it. They wanted to use the gala to announce Tiffany's engagement to Ace — the weal
