Chapter 2

Author: Willow Vale
Martha was stunned. "My lady, are you really going through with this alliance? You and Lord Richard were only children when you last met, more than ten years ago. I hear he's grown cruel in his dealings. Your uncle only wants to send you there to shore up the Lansing family's standing at court. I fear you'll suffer after marrying into that family."

Evelyn waved a hand. "Martha, don't worry about it. My mind is made up."

Martha opened her mouth to argue, but ultimately just sighed and left the room.

Evelyn sat alone by the window, watching the candle flame flicker.

Everyone said Richard Ashworth, heir of the Ashworth family, was cold and merciless. Anyone who crossed him ended up ruined, their whole family destroyed. But Evelyn knew better. He'd only built that reputation to hold together a family that was falling apart around him.

In her last life, she'd believed the rumors too. Later, after Julian locked her away in the estate, the servants took advantage of her fallen status, cutting her meals and trimming her allowance. Years of that treatment wore her down to nothing.

Somehow, Richard learned of it. He'd gone after Julian at court again and again, closing in slowly, until he finally forced open the doors that had kept Evelyn prisoner for half her life. By the time he found her, she was already at the end of her strength.

Just before her mind slipped away, she'd heard his voice, rough with pain as he said, "I should have fought for you back then. I should have taken you away from Julian myself. But it's too late now. It's too late for everything."

Evelyn's thoughts drifted back to the present.

It wasn't too late this time. In this life, she would be the one to go to Richard first.

After learning she'd agreed to the marriage, her uncle sent a reply the very next day. A messenger rode through the night to deliver word that he would come to the capital in a month to escort her south.

Evelyn stared at the letter for a long moment, then dropped it into the brazier at her feet.

She watched the paper catch fire, then rose and crossed to the cabinet, pulling out a carved wooden chest. Inside were all the gifts Julian had given her when they were young.

Her face betrayed nothing as she tossed every last item into the flames. Everything she'd once felt for him, every trace of affection, burned away along with those things.

The next day, an invitation for a garden party arrived from the Grand Duchess, Selena Winchester. Evelyn meant to decline, but Selena had decreed that every noble daughter in the capital had to attend, so she had no choice but to change and go.

At Selena's estate, Evelyn spotted a group of noble young ladies who used to be friendly with her. They were gathered in a pavilion nearby, needling Ivy with pointed remarks.

"You're a servant girl. How do you have the nerve to show your face at the Grand Duchess' garden party?"

"Stole your mistress' fiancé and now you think you're the lady of the house? Some people can climb as high as they like. They'll never turn into anything but what they started as."

"Keep your voice down. She's the young lord's darling now. Say the wrong thing and she'll whisper it in his ear, then you'll be the one paying for it."

Ivy stood with her head bowed and eyes rimmed red, the picture of wronged innocence.

Evelyn frowned and instinctively steered clear of the whole mess. She wanted nothing more to do with Ivy. But she'd barely turned around when she heard footsteps behind her. She looked back to see Ivy hurrying toward her, skirts gathered in her hands, already bending her knees to curtsey.

"You're the young lord's intended now. You don't need to curtsey to me anymore," Evelyn said while stepping aside, her tone distant.

Ivy blinked and looked up at her, tears shining in her eyes, her voice breaking as she replied, "My lady, are you still angry with me? You've shown me such kindness. I never meant to compete with you for anything..."

She reached out to take Evelyn's hand as she spoke. Evelyn stepped back, out of reach. Ivy's hand closed on empty air, then her whole body suddenly pitched toward the stone railing.

"My lady, help me!"

Evelyn's hand shot out on instinct. But the moment her fingers caught Ivy's sleeve, she was yanked forward hard, and the two of them went tumbling together into the icy pond.

Before long, a maid poked her head in. "My lady! The wedding carriage is at the gate!"Martha carefully lowered the veil over Evelyn's face. In an instant, all she could see was a wash of white. The attendants guided her carefully to her feet and out the door, placing her hand gently into Richard's.Through the veil, she couldn't see his face, but she could feel the faint dampness on his palm. The man who was always so composed and unshakable was as nervous as a boy today. He guided her carefully to the carriage, and she took her seat. Following the wedding customs of the Southlands, the carriage would circle the entire city once, so that all their friends and neighbors could share in the celebration. In a quiet, overlooked corner, a carriage sat waiting. Julian leaned weakly against the seat inside, his face drained of all color. He watched the wedding carriage pass by from a distance. For a hazy moment, the scene in front of him blurred together with the dream he'd had not long

At the last possible second, Julian burst through the trees and saw the danger unfolding before him. Almost on instinct, he threw himself in front of Evelyn, wrapping his arms around her to shield her body with his own.A split second later, the sound of flesh tearing filled the air.Julian's entire body shook violently, and a muffled groan escaped his throat. But his arms remained firmly around Evelyn, protecting her without ever letting go."Don't be afraid... I'm here..." his voice came from above her head, thick with unbearable pain. She lay frozen beneath him, watching the horror unfold, her whole body trembling. Some time later, the sound of hoofbeats thundered in the distance. Then came the whistle of arrows cutting through the air. Wounded, the wolves let out a series of warning growls before finally scattering, disappearing into the depths of the forest. The tension in Julian's body suddenly gave way, and he collapsed heavily onto Evelyn, completely still. Her whole body

Evelyn woke to the violent jolting of a carriage. Her limbs felt weak and boneless, while her wrists and ankles were bound with soft cotton rope.Julian sat across from her. He stared at her without blinking, as if she might vanish into thin air the second he looked away.A few days had passed since she'd last seen him, and the shadows beneath his eyes had only deepened. Unkempt stubble covered his jaw. All the poise and refinement he used to carry had been stripped away, leaving nothing but ruin and obsession.Seeing her eyes open, something wild flared in his hollow gaze."You're awake. I'm taking you back to the capital. As soon as we get there, we're getting married. Everything that happened was my mistake. I'll make it up to you. From now on, I'll do whatever you want. You'll come around eventually," he said, his voice coming out badly cracked.Evelyn leaned against the carriage wall, her expression cold. "And then what? What good does dragging me back and keeping me locked u

"I'm not leaving! Evelyn..."Julian wrenched free from the guards and lunged forward, reaching for her. But before his fingers could brush her sleeve, a hand shot out and closed firmly around his wrist.Evelyn turned her head to find Richard had returned, though she hadn't noticed when. Julian's head snapped up, his gaze burning with anger at the sight of the other man. Richard released his grip and stepped back, positioning himself between Evelyn and Julian."What is a lord of your standing doing all the way down here in the Southlands, so far from the capital? This hardly seems like a place where you belong. Evelyn already told you she doesn't want you bothering her anymore. You should go," said Richard.Julian ground his teeth. "What's between her and me is none of your business. Get out of my way."Richard didn't move an inch. "Evelyn is my intended. Her business is my business.""You two aren't even married yet..." Julian's voice rose despite his attempt to keep it under con

The day Evelyn finished embroidering her wedding gown, she was folding it to put it away when a voice called from outside, "My lady, there's someone here asking for you. He says he's an old acquaintance."Evelyn paused for a moment. She already had a guess who it was. The only person she knew in the Southlands was her uncle. Aside from Julian, who else would come calling?"I won't see him," she replied calmly. The servant acknowledged her reply and left. But before long, she came hurrying back."My lady, he says if you won't come out, he'll wait at the gate until you do."Evelyn frowned, but rose and followed the servant to the gate anyway. Outside the Ashworth family's estate, the guards were holding someone back.It was Julian. She hadn't seen him in a while, and he looked considerably more haggard now. He was noticeably thinner, with the dark circles under his eyes visible even from several steps away.At the sound of her footsteps, Julian stopped trying to force his way pas

Richard's hand froze around the cup. It took him a long moment to speak."Did you really mean everything you said?" he asked, his voice hoarse beyond recognition.Evelyn smiled, warmth filling her eyes. "From now on, I hope you'll always stay with me."Richard's eyes went red-rimmed instantly, his hands trembling with emotion as he shot to his feet. "Martha, please look after her. I need to step out for a moment. I'll be right back."After he finished speaking, he turned and hurried out of the room.Leaning on her cane by the bed, Martha couldn't help but laugh. "My lady, I think Lord Richard is so overcome he doesn't know what to do with himself."Evelyn watched him flee the room and smiled again. It wasn't until evening that Richard reappeared at her door. He'd changed into clean clothes and looked considerably more composed. He sat down at the edge of the bed, his voice softer than usual as he explained, "I spoke with my mother. Once you're feeling stronger, we'll start plan
