Chapter 3

Author: Willow Vale
The cold water closed over Evelyn in an instant. She held her breath on reflex and kicked desperately toward the shore, but Ivy had her wrist in a death grip. No matter how hard she struggled, she couldn't break free.

As the two of them sank together, icy water poured into Evelyn's nose until her vision went dark at the edges.

Someone shouted, "Someone's fallen in! Help!"

A figure shoved through the crowd and dove into the pond without hesitation.

Through the blur of water, Evelyn saw Julian swim past her. He wrapped an arm around Ivy's waist, pulled her close against his chest, and swam for shore without so much as a backward glance.

Evelyn froze for a second, then choked on another mouthful of water. After flailing around for a few seconds, she finally managed to steady herself and emerge from the water. When she looked up, she was met with Julian's furious gaze.

"Lady Evelyn, is this how petty you are? You can't even stand to share with her? I already promised to make you my secondary wife. Why do you keep pushing Ivy like this? You shoved her into the water! You know she can't swim!" he ranted.

Evelyn floated there, shivering all over, her lips trembling as she tried to speak.

But Ivy got there first, eyes red-rimmed as she explained, "It's not my lady's fault. I lost my footing and pulled her in with me..."

Julian let out a weary sigh. "You're still defending her. If she treats you like this now, what will happen once the two of you are living under the same roof? She'll walk all over you."

He looked back at Evelyn, his gaze hard as ice. "You like pushing Ivy into the water so much? Then, stay in there and enjoy it. Someone watch her. No one pulls her out until I say so."

With that, he swept Ivy up and walked away, giving orders as he went, "Send for a physician. Ivy's constitution is delicate. We can't risk her catching a chill."

"Lord Julian! You-"

Evelyn grabbed the stone edge again, but the moment she got a grip, one of the guards Julian left behind kicked her right back into the water.

Countless eyes bore down on her from every side. But with Julian's orders, no one dared step forward to pull her out. She floated in the freezing water and stopped fighting.

In that moment, whatever was left of her feelings for Julian died completely.

It wasn't until the garden party ended that the estate's servants finally helped Evelyn climb out, soaked and shaking. Martha went pale at the sight of her, fumbling to get her into a carriage.

That night, Evelyn came down with a raging fever.

In her delirium, she seemed to slip back to age fifteen, right after her grandfather died. That was when all those relatives who'd once doted on her for his sake suddenly turned cold and started treating her like a bargaining chip for marriage alliances.

It was Julian who had stood up for her back then, telling them all, "Lady Evelyn will be my wife one day. Anyone who wrongs her answers to the entire Sterling family."

But the scene shifted, and all that was left was a bottomless lake. She swam and swam but could never reach the shore.

Evelyn didn't know how long she slept. When she woke up, she found Martha slumped over the edge of her bed, keeping watch. Her throat was too dry to speak. She could only lift a hand and brush it against Martha's.

Martha startled awake, and the moment her eyes met Evelyn's, she burst into tears. "My lady, you're finally awake. You've been asleep for seven whole days. The physician said if you didn't wake up soon, you might not make it..."

She carefully fed Evelyn some water, her eyes still red-rimmed. "Lord Julian ordered every physician in the city to attend to that wretched girl. No one was allowed to come treat you.

"I ran myself ragged and couldn't get a single physician to come. In the end, I had to beg an old physician I've known for years. He snuck in through the back door in the middle of the night..."

Evelyn listened to her with a sharp pang in her chest, but it settled quickly.

"Martha, don't cry anymore. It's over now," she said softly.

Before long, a maid poked her head in. "My lady! The wedding carriage is at the gate!"Martha carefully lowered the veil over Evelyn's face. In an instant, all she could see was a wash of white. The attendants guided her carefully to her feet and out the door, placing her hand gently into Richard's.Through the veil, she couldn't see his face, but she could feel the faint dampness on his palm. The man who was always so composed and unshakable was as nervous as a boy today. He guided her carefully to the carriage, and she took her seat. Following the wedding customs of the Southlands, the carriage would circle the entire city once, so that all their friends and neighbors could share in the celebration. In a quiet, overlooked corner, a carriage sat waiting. Julian leaned weakly against the seat inside, his face drained of all color. He watched the wedding carriage pass by from a distance. For a hazy moment, the scene in front of him blurred together with the dream he'd had not long

At the last possible second, Julian burst through the trees and saw the danger unfolding before him. Almost on instinct, he threw himself in front of Evelyn, wrapping his arms around her to shield her body with his own.A split second later, the sound of flesh tearing filled the air.Julian's entire body shook violently, and a muffled groan escaped his throat. But his arms remained firmly around Evelyn, protecting her without ever letting go."Don't be afraid... I'm here..." his voice came from above her head, thick with unbearable pain. She lay frozen beneath him, watching the horror unfold, her whole body trembling. Some time later, the sound of hoofbeats thundered in the distance. Then came the whistle of arrows cutting through the air. Wounded, the wolves let out a series of warning growls before finally scattering, disappearing into the depths of the forest. The tension in Julian's body suddenly gave way, and he collapsed heavily onto Evelyn, completely still. Her whole body

Evelyn woke to the violent jolting of a carriage. Her limbs felt weak and boneless, while her wrists and ankles were bound with soft cotton rope.Julian sat across from her. He stared at her without blinking, as if she might vanish into thin air the second he looked away.A few days had passed since she'd last seen him, and the shadows beneath his eyes had only deepened. Unkempt stubble covered his jaw. All the poise and refinement he used to carry had been stripped away, leaving nothing but ruin and obsession.Seeing her eyes open, something wild flared in his hollow gaze."You're awake. I'm taking you back to the capital. As soon as we get there, we're getting married. Everything that happened was my mistake. I'll make it up to you. From now on, I'll do whatever you want. You'll come around eventually," he said, his voice coming out badly cracked.Evelyn leaned against the carriage wall, her expression cold. "And then what? What good does dragging me back and keeping me locked u

"I'm not leaving! Evelyn..."Julian wrenched free from the guards and lunged forward, reaching for her. But before his fingers could brush her sleeve, a hand shot out and closed firmly around his wrist.Evelyn turned her head to find Richard had returned, though she hadn't noticed when. Julian's head snapped up, his gaze burning with anger at the sight of the other man. Richard released his grip and stepped back, positioning himself between Evelyn and Julian."What is a lord of your standing doing all the way down here in the Southlands, so far from the capital? This hardly seems like a place where you belong. Evelyn already told you she doesn't want you bothering her anymore. You should go," said Richard.Julian ground his teeth. "What's between her and me is none of your business. Get out of my way."Richard didn't move an inch. "Evelyn is my intended. Her business is my business.""You two aren't even married yet..." Julian's voice rose despite his attempt to keep it under con

The day Evelyn finished embroidering her wedding gown, she was folding it to put it away when a voice called from outside, "My lady, there's someone here asking for you. He says he's an old acquaintance."Evelyn paused for a moment. She already had a guess who it was. The only person she knew in the Southlands was her uncle. Aside from Julian, who else would come calling?"I won't see him," she replied calmly. The servant acknowledged her reply and left. But before long, she came hurrying back."My lady, he says if you won't come out, he'll wait at the gate until you do."Evelyn frowned, but rose and followed the servant to the gate anyway. Outside the Ashworth family's estate, the guards were holding someone back.It was Julian. She hadn't seen him in a while, and he looked considerably more haggard now. He was noticeably thinner, with the dark circles under his eyes visible even from several steps away.At the sound of her footsteps, Julian stopped trying to force his way pas

Richard's hand froze around the cup. It took him a long moment to speak."Did you really mean everything you said?" he asked, his voice hoarse beyond recognition.Evelyn smiled, warmth filling her eyes. "From now on, I hope you'll always stay with me."Richard's eyes went red-rimmed instantly, his hands trembling with emotion as he shot to his feet. "Martha, please look after her. I need to step out for a moment. I'll be right back."After he finished speaking, he turned and hurried out of the room.Leaning on her cane by the bed, Martha couldn't help but laugh. "My lady, I think Lord Richard is so overcome he doesn't know what to do with himself."Evelyn watched him flee the room and smiled again. It wasn't until evening that Richard reappeared at her door. He'd changed into clean clothes and looked considerably more composed. He sat down at the edge of the bed, his voice softer than usual as he explained, "I spoke with my mother. Once you're feeling stronger, we'll start plan
