Chapter 7 - The Edge of Control

Bloodmoon territory had always felt unshakable.

The stone keep stood at the heart of the forest like a monument to dominance — carved from mountain rock, weathered by time, fortified by loyalty. Wolves trained with discipline. Patrol routes were predictable. The pack link flowed steadily and unified.

Now it felt strained.

Like a structure with hairline fractures running beneath its foundation. Kael felt it in the way conversations quieted when he entered a space. In the way warriors held eye contact a second longer than usual. In the way the air itself seemed charged — not with rebellion, but anticipation.

“She crossed again.”

Beta Tristan stood across from him in the strategy hall, arms folded tightly.

“How far?” Kael asked without looking up from the map laid before him.

“Close enough that the northern patrol scented her clearly.”

Kael’s fingers stilled on the parchment.

The bond stirred immediately — reacting to the mere mention of her proximity.

“She didn’t engage?” he asked.

“No. She stood. Watched. Then left.”

Not reckless. Not provocative. Measured.

Kael dismissed Tristan and stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the tree line. The forest stretched endlessly, silvered by moonlight. Somewhere beyond those shadows, she stood.

He felt her.

Not vividly — not constantly — but like a low hum beneath his ribs. Every time she approached the boundary, it strengthened. Like a heartbeat syncing closer to his own.

He had buried that connection fifteen years ago.

Or thought he had.

The night he rejected Lyra publicly, he had felt the bond tear like flesh. The Goddess connection snapping left nothing but a hollow ache that slowly dulled over time.

He had convinced himself it was dead.

But bonds blessed by the Moon Goddess did not die so easily.

They waited.

And now, somehow, it was rebuilding.

“She shouldn’t exist,” he muttered.

Yet the thread pulsed warm and undeniable.

Alive.

Across the border, Aria stood exactly where the patrol would scent her.

Not hidden.

Not aggressive.

Visible.

Let them know I’m here.

Her wolf stretched lazily beneath her skin, strong and composed.

He feels us.

“Yes.”

The first flare of the renewed bond days ago had nearly knocked the breath from her lungs. Now it was steadier — but no less powerful.

Every time she approached Bloodmoon territory, the connection pulled tighter.

It was not a submission.

It was alignment seeking balance.

She stepped one deliberate pace closer to the invisible boundary.

The response was immediate.

Heat surged through her spine. Her pulse quickened.

Somewhere within Bloodmoon, Kael reacted.

She pushed against the thread — not violently, but firmly.

Dominance.

Equal.

A low, resonant growl vibrated through her awareness in answer.

Not anger.

Acknowledgment.

Her breath caught despite her control.

Fifteen years ago, that growl meant protection.

Now it meant tension.

Behind her, Garrick approached cautiously.

“You’re provoking him.”

“I’m measuring him.”

“That’s dangerous.”

“Only if he loses control.”

She turned slightly, silver eyes reflecting the moonlight.

“And he’s fighting not to.”

That was what mattered.

If Kael had truly believed her guilty all those years ago, he would have attacked by now.

Instead, he hesitated.

And hesitation in an Alpha meant something was unravelling internally.

Kael felt the push.

Subtle.

Deliberate.

Not aggressive enough to warrant retaliation — but strong enough to challenge.

His wolf surged forward instinctively.

Mine.

The possessive instinct rose sharply and immediately. It startled him with its intensity.

He hadn’t felt that in years.

Not even with Selene.

The comparison surfaced before he could stop it.

Selene had been steady. Calculated. Supportive.

But she had never ignited instinct.

Aria did.

And that alone destabilised him.

He left the keep without announcing it, moving swiftly through the forest until he reached the northern edge.

She stood there waiting.

Of course she did.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said quietly.

“You felt me,” she replied.

Her voice was calm.

Not taunting.

The bond tightened painfully between them.

“You’re testing territory lines,” he said.

“I’m testing you.”

The honesty startled him.

He stepped closer.

Close enough that he could scent her clearly.

Moonlight. Frost. Strength.

And beneath it all — the faint echo of jasmine that haunted his memory.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because you made a decision fifteen years ago without doubt,” she said softly. “I want to see if you still do.”

The accusation hung heavy.

“I acted for the stability of the pack.”

“You acted quickly.”

He stopped within arm’s reach.

The air between them felt thick, almost electric.

“You remember everything?” he asked quietly.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

“I remember standing before my mate while he condemned me.”

The words struck like a physical blow.

The bond flared violently in response — reacting to emotional intensity.

Without thinking, he reached for her.

His hand wrapped around her wrist.

The contact ignited both of them.

Heat slammed through his system like wildfire. His breath hitched. His wolf roared forward in triumph.

Her pulse jumped beneath his fingers.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The forest seemed to fall silent around them.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

But her voice wasn’t firm.

It trembled — not with fear.

With restraint.

“Why?” he murmured, stepping closer still.

“Because the bond doesn’t differentiate between desire and dominance.”

His thumb brushed lightly over the inside of her wrist.

The smallest movement.

But it sent a sharp shiver up her spine.

The connection surged.

Images flickered in his mind — memories of holding her beneath moonlight years ago. The way she used to lean into his chest. The way she once trusted him completely.

His grip tightened unconsciously.

Mine.

Her free hand came up and pressed against his chest — not pushing yet.

“Careful,” she warned softly.

“You’re still my mate.”

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

Her eyes flashed silver.

“You forfeited that claim.”

The truth in it sliced through the haze.

He loosened his hold — but didn’t release her fully.

“If I was wrong,” he said slowly, voice rough, “then I have lived fifteen years on a lie.”

Her expression softened for the briefest second.

Then hardened again.

“And I died because of it.”

Silence fell between them.

The weight of that truth pressed heavily into his chest.

The bond pulsed again — steadier now, less volatile.

It wasn’t demanding possession.

It was a demanding reckoning.

He released her slowly.

The absence of contact felt like withdrawal.

“The full moon is in two nights,” he said quietly.

“Yes.”

“You intend to challenge me.”

“I intend to force truth.”

He studied her carefully.

“You don’t want my throne.”

“I want accountability.”

That distinction unsettled him deeply.

Because taking his throne would have been simpler.

Destroying his authority would have been easier to fight.

But demanding truth meant dismantling foundations.

She stepped back toward rogue territory.

The bond stretched painfully as distance grew.

“I won’t attack before the challenge,” she added calmly.

“Nor will I,” he replied.

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then she turned and disappeared into the trees.

The thread between them remained — taut, alive, waiting.

Kael stood alone at the border long after she vanished.

For the first time in fifteen years, he felt something unfamiliar beneath his Alpha certainty.

Not weakness.

Not fear.

Doubt.

And doubt, he realised, was far more dangerous than rebellion.

Because doubt led to questions.

And questions led to truth.

And if the truth proved he had executed an innocent Luna—

Then Bloodmoon would not just face a challenge for power.

It would face a reckoning.

Above him, the moon continued its slow ascent.

Two nights remained.

Two nights before, dominance would be tested.

Two nights before, the bond would either shatter again—

Or finally be forced into balance.

Even Rowan, standing atop the ridge overlooking their territory, felt the tension coil inside him like a living thing.Aria sat beside him, her gaze fixed on the moon. The strange energy that had surged within her during the last battle was pulsing stronger tonight. It felt alive, ancient, and boundless, as if the moon itself had embedded a piece of its soul within her.“You feel it too,” Rowan said quietly, his hand brushing lightly against hers. She nodded, her silver eyes reflecting the moonlight. “It’s… different now. Stronger. More demanding.”Rowan’s wolf growled beneath his skin. He could sense the raw potential waiting inside her

Fires flickered in scattered circles. Shadows moved among them. The golden glint of Kael’s eyes caught the torchlight.“There,” Aria whispered.Rowan nodded grimly. His jaw was tight, his black wolf coiling like a spring inside him. He glanced

Smoke still drifted through the Moonridge courtyard long after the enemy wolves had vanished into the forest.Warriors rushed between buildings, stamping out flames and carrying the wounded to the healer’s hall. • The Reborn Luna's Vengeance   Chapter 24 -The Hunt begins

Dawn broke over Moonridge like a blade cutting through fog. But the light did nothing to ease the tension hanging over the pack territory. Beta Damien was dead. And the real traitor was still somewhere inside Moonridge. Rowan stood in the courtyard before the gathered warriors, his posture rigid with barely restrained fury. Nearly the entire pack had been called together. Wolves stood in tense clusters, whispering anxiously as rumours spread like wildfire. Aria stood beside Rowan, her silver eyes scanning the crowd carefully. Fear. Suspicion. Anger. She could smell it on them.

The forest had never felt so still. Rowan stood across from Kael, every muscle in his body coiled tight with restrained fury. The moonlight filtered through the towering trees, illuminating the clearing where the three Alphas now faced one another. Tension crackled in the air like lightning before a storm. Aria remained between them, though her attention had shifted completely. To Kael’s last words. The kind that brings the dead back to life. Her chest tightened. “You’re lying,” Rowan said coldly. Kael tilted his head slightly. “Am I?” Rowan took a step forward.
