Chapter 3

作者: Fish Cares
Half a month later, the royal spring hunt convened at the Western Hills preserve, right on schedule.

For generations, this had been the moment when the royal family showed off its might and the princes vied for the King's favor.

In my last life, Weston, crippled in both legs, had spent that day being mocked and jeered at by every relative in the royal clan while stuck in his wheelchair.

It was only because I'd secretly driven a pack of wolves to bring down a rare white tiger for him that he'd taken first place and won the King's attention.

This time, he couldn't wait to prove his own judgment had been right, and he'd spent the whole morning loudly touting Rose's reputation as the "Saintess."

"Father, as the Southlands Saintess, Rose can command every beast alive." Weston sat in his wheelchair, pale-faced but with a strange, fevered gleam in his eyes. "I can't hunt on horseback myself today, but Rose is willing to stand in for me and give Father a spectacle: every beast in the forest paying homage!"

The King, seated on the raised platform, arched an eyebrow, a flicker of interest crossing his face.

"Oh? Every beast paying homage? If she can truly pull that off, I'll reward her handsomely!"

A murmur ran through the assembled nobles and officials, every gaze fixing on Rose.

She'd dressed for the occasion in a garishly bright red riding outfit, mounted on a tall white horse.

She shot me a smug glance, then pulled a Southlands beast-taming bone flute out from somewhere in her robes and pressed it to her lips, blowing hard.

A shrill, piercing note echoed across the hunting grounds.

Everyone held their breath, craning their necks toward the distant treeline, waiting for the spectacle of beasts descending from the mountains to pay homage.

30 minutes passed. Nothing stirred in the forest.

Another 30 minutes passed. Not even a rabbit came out.

Muffled snickers started spreading through the crowd, and the King's expression darkened by the second.

Weston panicked, shouting from his wheelchair, "Rose! Blow harder! Bring out the biggest beast you've got!"

Sweating, her face flushed red, Rose blew into the flute with everything she had.

That was when a deep, ground-shaking rumble tore out from the depths of the forest.

"It's coming! It's coming!" Weston shouted, ecstatic.

But what burst out of the treeline wasn't some auspicious white tiger. It was a mob of wild boars, eyes bloodshot, foaming at the mouth, utterly rabid.

Massive and sharp-tusked, they charged straight at the crowd.

Rose's flute couldn't do a thing to calm the boars. If anything, the sound had only enraged them further.

Rose, caught right in their path. She let out a scream and toppled off her horse, landing face-first in the mud.

The rabid boars ignored her entirely and charged straight toward the platform where Weston sat, following the sound of the flute.

"Protect His Highness! Protect Prince Weston!"

Weston's guards scrambled into chaos, drawing their blades to hold the line, but there was no stopping that many thick-hided, frenzied beasts.

In that split second of crisis, I stood at the edge of the viewing platform, watching the pandemonium below with a cold, detached eye.

The largest of the boars suddenly veered off course and charged straight at the platform where I stood.

Before I could even react, a broad, upright figure stepped in front of me.

It was Prince Roman.

Wielding his bow one-handed, he didn't even bother nocking an arrow. He simply swung the heavy iron-cored weapon down on the lead boar's skull, and its brains burst across the ground.

Blood sprayed across him, and he didn't so much as flinch, only kept me shielded firmly behind him.

Using the cover of his wide sleeve, I moved my fingers slightly.

Beneath the fabric hiding it, the golden serpent mark I'd been born with flared to life, casting a faint but overpowering glow.

A wave of terror, the kind only beasts could sense, rippled outward from me at its center.

The boars, still charging in every direction a moment ago, suddenly reacted as though they'd run into some unspeakable natural predator. They let out a collective wail of anguish and wheeled around all at once.

They stopped attacking everyone else and threw themselves, as if possessed, straight into Weston's ranks.

"Ah! Help me! Father, save me!"

Weston's despairing scream tore across the hunting grounds.

The boars trampled his guards flat and knocked his wheelchair over.

His already-ruined legs were crushed under the hooves of countless boars, the sickening crack of bone splintering as his flesh turned to pulp.

Screams rang out across the grounds.

The corner of my mouth curled into a cold, satisfied smile.

Just this was already too much for him? The real show hadn't even started yet.

Just then, Roman turned to face me.

He reached out a blood-streaked hand and gently wiped a fleck of splattered mud from my cheek.

He leaned in close, his voice dropping low enough for only the two of us to hear.

"My Crown Princess, your methods sure are clean and efficient."

A shiver ran through me, and I looked up at him sharply.

In that moment, I knew for certain.

He'd been reborn too.

I rose to my feet and brushed my hands off in disgust."Bring her in."The iron door of the cell swung open.A few guards dragged in something that barely resembled a human being, chained in iron.It was Rose. Her body was covered in weeping sores, her features rotted away entirely, her eyes hollow and vacant. She was letting out mindless, beast-like snarls.Weston had finished refining her into a cursed puppet, a creature that felt no pain and carried lethal poison in every inch of her body. The instant Weston saw her, he recoiled in terror, scrambling backward. "Keep her away from me! Get that monster out of here!"I watched them both with cold, unfeeling eyes."In your last life, you believed she was innocent, and that I was the one who destroyed her."This time, I asked Prince Roman specifically to build a Serpent Pit beneath this very prison, ten times larger than the one from your last life."I raised a hand, and the guards triggered the mechanism hidden in the wall.

Without a moment's hesitation, I bit into my own fingertip.A single drop of deep red blood welled up.I raised my hand and smeared that drop of blood hard across my forehead. In an instant, the golden serpent mark on my wrist seemed to come alive, erupting into a blindingly brilliant burst of golden light. The light shot straight into the sky, bathing the entire mansion in an unnatural daylight.I clasped my hands into a sign, and an ancient, cryptic Southlands beast-taming chant poured from my lips.My voice wasn't loud, but it carried an absolute authority that seemed to pierce straight through the soul, sweeping across the entire battlefield in an instant.A miracle happened in that moment. The venomous creatures and beasts that had been charging at us in a frenzy froze in place all at once, the instant they heard my chant and felt the crushing weight of the Saintess bloodline. They cowered on the ground, trembling, letting out whimpering sounds of submission. Then, the i

"I'm not just jealous. I want to kill someone." Roman's fingers traced lightly over the golden serpent mark on my wrist, a bloodthirsty glint flashing in his eyes. "Our spies report that Weston isn't willing to just sit and wait for death. He's secretly conspired with Southlands rebels hiding in the capital. They mean to storm the palace and seize the throne on the day of our wedding."I arched an eyebrow, not particularly surprised.Weston was a venomous snake through and through. As long as he wasn't dead yet, he'd always find a way to bite back."Where's he getting the nerve for this?" I asked."He's turned Rose into a cursed puppet." Roman's voice went icy.The Southlands had a forbidden ritual, uniquely vicious even by their standards: soaking a person in a vat of a hundred poisons for forty-nine days while cursed insects ate away at their brain.Anyone who survived it lost all sense of pain and reason, transformed into a killing machine that obeyed only its master, every

Roman's voice turned as cold as a blade honed in ice. "You think you're allowed to say my future wife's name like that? Look at her one more time, and I'll gouge out your eyes right now."Curled up on the ground in agony, his mouth full of blood, Weston still stared at me, his eyes brimming with despair and bitter resentment.Watching this absurd scene unfold, the King's face had gone livid with rage."Enough! You disgrace yourself!"The King pointed at Weston, his voice a furious roar. "Prince Weston has shown terrible judgment and disgraced the throne with this spectacle. As of today, his princely title is stripped, he is demoted to commoner status, and he is to be confined to his residence. He is never to set foot outside those walls again without my express order!"Weston's vision went black, and he passed out cold."As for this vicious wretch who dared deceive the throne..." The King turned a look of disgust on Rose, still slumped on the ground. "Drag her away. Death by a

The assembled ministers erupted at once. A wave of pointing fingers and murmurs washed over Rose.Weston stared at Rose's bare wrist, his eyes bulging. His mouth hung open like a dying fish, his whole face slack with disbelief."Impossible... this is impossible..." he muttered, as if his entire faith had just collapsed.Having delivered its bite, the serpent released its grip in disgust and slithered leisurely toward the crowd. The onlookers scrambled back in terror. But it made straight for me instead, and stopped at my feet. All its aggression gone, it nuzzled the hem of my skirt with its cool head, gentle as a docile kitten, then coiled contentedly at my feet.Under the shocked stares of everyone present, I slowly rolled up my right sleeve.Sunlight poured down. There, on my pale wrist, was the golden serpent mark I'd been born with, coiling like a living thing, suddenly bared to the open air.It gleamed in the sunlight, radiating an ancient authority that made people wan

The spring hunt had turned into an utter disaster. The King's fury exploded, and he smashed his teacup on the spot."This is the beast-worship spectacle you were going to show me?" He pointed at Rose, who lay collapsed and shaking on the ground below, his rage boundless. "Someone drag this lying wretch away and have her head!"The royal guards surged forward and pinned Rose to the ground.Terrified out of her mind, Rose thrashed and screamed for mercy."Your Majesty, spare me! Please, spare me!"Desperate to shift the blame, she whipped her head around and pointed a shaking finger up at me on the platform."It's her! It's Monica! She secretly poisoned me and sabotaged my ritual! She's jealous that I get to marry Prince Weston, so she lured that mob of boars here to kill him! Your Majesty, please believe me, I really am the Southlands Saintess!"Weston, his legs hastily bandaged by the royal physician, was sweating in agony, his face twisted with pain.Hearing Rose's accusation
