Chapter 5: The Silver Gate

(Cassian's POV)

The cold air outside carried the scent of wet pine, but the smell inside my infirmary was far more dangerous.

It was mountain rain and wild honey. It belonged to her.

I stood outside the heavy oak doors, my broad shoulders blocking the dim light of the corridor.

Inside, quiet linen bandages rustled as two injured women breathed softly.

Beta Eli stood beside me, his tactical vest coated in dried river mud.

"She fought like a wild animal against Brandon’s scouts, Cassian," Eli whispered, looking toward the corner of the room. "An unbonded, scentless omega shouldn't survive a night in the Shadow Forest. The pack elders are already demanding answers."

"Let them demand," I growled low in my throat.

I turned my head and looked through the small glass window set into the door.

Sierra sat on the edge of the stone examination table inside. She was pale, exhausted, and bruised. Her clothes were shredded from sharp briars, her dark hair tangled and damp.

Yet, even covered in dirt, the magnetic pull of the mate bond pounded in my blood like a wild current.

Alpha Logan had tossed her away like trash. He thought she was weak.

But the second my eyes met hers at the border, my dormant wolf roared to life with a ferocious, possessive hunger. I hadn't felt my beast move like this in ten long years.

Inside the room, the chief medic reached out with a pair of silver shears. He moved to cut away the torn fabric at her waist where a rogue's claw had grazed her.

Sierra winced, flinching back against the cold wall. She braced herself for pain.

A sharp, possessive rage flared in my chest.

The thought of another male touching her skin—even a trusted pack physician—made my aura explode through the corridor. The air grew thick with the heavy scent of dark cedar, ozone, and winter rain.

"Step back," I commanded, shoving the heavy wooden door open with a loud thud.

My voice echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. The medic instantly dropped his shears and bowed his head, backing away quickly.

I crossed the flagstone floor, my towering frame instantly filling the small room.

Sierra held her breath. Her wide brown eyes tracked my every step as I closed the distance between us.

"Cassian?" she rasped, her voice trembling slightly.

"Don't move," I said softly.

I knelt beside her examination table, bringing myself level with her waist.

Her heat was feverish and intoxicating. Slowly, deliberately, I reached out. My calloused fingers slid directly onto her bare hip to inspect the bloody wound.

The exact second skin touched skin, a shockwave of blinding heat exploded up my arm.

Sierra gasped loudly. Her back arched off the table as her fingers dug frantically into the sheets beneath her. "Cassian!"

My dark silver eyes widened as my wolf lunged to the surface. A low, primal growl rumbled deep in my chest—a possessive sound that filled the silent room.

Claim her. She is ours, my wolf roared in my head. Mark her now.

I dragged my hand back with violent speed, pulling my arm to my side. I clenched my fist until my knuckles turned stark white.

I used every ounce of my iron discipline to pull back from her.

"Get Martha," I ordered the medic, my voice raspy and dangerously tight. "Prepare the residential suite in the main wing. Get her fresh silk dresses, hot meals, and whatever else she needs."

The medic bowed rapidly. "Right away, Alpha."

Sierra blinked up at me, her voice barely a whisper. "Why are you doing this?"

"Because you are under my protection now," I said softly. I let my protective scent soothe her frayed nerves. "Rest, Sierra. We will speak when you are healed."

By the next morning, the Midnight Citadel had settled into a steady rhythm.

Sierra looked breathtaking sitting up in her canopy bed, dressed in ivory silk that highlighted the soft curves of her shoulders. The pale, bruised look on her face was gone, replaced by a radiant glow.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching her quietly from across the room.

Eli stood near the bedside, whispering quiet words to her younger sister, Liana. He offered the girl a small jar of healing salve for her lip.

"Keep applying this twice a day," Eli said gently, his voice surprisingly soft. "It will stop the burning."

Liana took the jar, blushing slightly. "Thank you, Beta Eli."

I caught the subtle, protective smirk on my Beta's face. I made a mental note of how his stance shifted whenever Liana was near.

When Eli led Liana into the hallway to give us privacy, Sierra’s dark eyes drifted slowly to mine.

I walked over, stepping onto the plush rug beside her bed. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," she said smoothly. "Much better than I deserve."

"You deserve far more than a warm bed, Sierra," I replied, sitting down in the plush armchair beside her. "I know everything feels overwhelming right now. You were betrayed, rejected, and hunted like a criminal."

She looked at me in genuine surprise. "What are you saying?"

"I am your true mate, and you are mine," I said simply, letting my voice ring with absolute certainty. "But I will never force you into a mating ceremony. Nor will I demand you take the title of Luna until you are ready."

She stared at me, her lips parting slightly. "You won't force me?"

"Never," I promised. "This Citadel is your home now. You and your sister are free to walk anywhere, speak to anyone, and take all the time you need to heal."

A soft, emotional silence settled over the room. I felt the heavy wall around her heart slowly begin to crack open.

"Thank you, Cassian," she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

Before I could reply, the heavy oak door was slammed open without a knock.

An elite Syndicate messenger rushed into the room. He was drenched in sweat and pale with sheer panic.

He dropped hard onto one knee before my chair, holding out a sealed parchment scroll with a fresh red wax stamp.

"Forgive the intrusion, Alpha!" the courier panted, his chest heaving. "An urgent decree was just posted across the High Council network by the Bloodmoon Pack!"

My eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as I snatched the scroll and snapped the dark wax seal with my thumb.

As my eyes scanned the written lines, my protective aura turned into an icy, suffocating rage. The air in the room grew so heavy that the courier trembled where he knelt.

"Cassian?" Sierra asked, her voice tight with sudden fear. "What is it? What does it say?"

I closed the parchment slowly, my jaw set like carved iron as I looked up at my mate.

"Logan and Sarah have officially announced their mate union to the Lycan High Council," I said darkly, my voice vibrating with lethal intent. "And they have issued a continental arrest warrant for you."

"For me?" Sierra gasped, placing a trembling hand over her chest. "On what grounds?"

"They claim you are a traitor," I growled, crushing the parchment in my fist until it crumpled into dust. "They say you stole classified pack seals and tried to assassinate Alpha Logan before fleeing into the night."

Sierra shook her head frantically. "That's a lie! I never touched his seals! I barely escaped with my life!"

"I know," I said, standing up to my full height as dark power rippled around my shoulders. "Logan is terrified of what you might become. But he made a fatal mistake."

Sierra looked up at me. "What mistake?"

"He drove you straight into my arms," I vowed quietly. "And I will tear his pack apart before I let him lay a single finger on you again."

(Cassian's POV) She was about to use her magic again. Even on my knees, with cold iron digging into my flesh, I could feel the sudden surge through our bond. It was that raw, dark power that always drove me and my inner wolf completely insane. The air around Sierra began to hum. A thick, suffocating heat filled the space between us, turning the freezing fog into rising steam. As much as I would have loved to see my mate in action—to watch her tear Hector and Sarah apart with her bare hands—I couldn't let her do this. Not here. Not in front of these bloodthirsty bastards. If she unleashed her ancient power in front of the entire Red Fang vanguard, every Alpha in the northern territories would declare war on her. They would hunt her down like a wild beast. "Sierra, don't," I growled, my voice hoarse as I thrashed against the heavy links. I don't think she heard me. She was too far away in her own mind. Her dark eyes were fixed on the frosty cobblestones, completely unblin

My inner wolf was restless, pacing back and forth behind my ribs, eager for the blood of our enemies.Just as I raised my blade to order the vanguard forward, a quiet disturbance caught my ear from behind.I glanced over my shoulder. Through the crowded courtyard, I saw Liana sprinting toward us. Her dark hair was messy, sticking to her sweaty forehead, and her breath came in ragged gasps. She ran right past the guards and grabbed Sierra's leather sleeve."Liana!" Sierra gasped, spinning around and catching her younger sister by the shoulders. "Where on earth have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere!""I was down in the deep base

Their shields were locked together, their spears pointed outward through the iron grates. On the other side of the bridge, a massive army was gathered in the fog. (Cassian's POV)The scent of dry cedar and sweet jasmine filled my private room as the fire roared in the large stone hearth. Out in the courtyard, the pack had finally gone quiet. I shut the heavy wooden door and turned around to look at Sierra. She stood near the edge of the sheepskin rug. Her hands were shaking badly as she tried to unbutton her riding sleeves. Sarah’s threat was sitting on the table, but I could tell that was not what was scaring her."Sierra," I said softly, stepping closer. "You are shaking. Talk to me.""I can't stop thinking about Aethelgard," she burst out, her voice loud and frantic. She started pacing back and forth, waving her hands in the air. "You were standing there with no armor! Logan had a raw blade, and when that dirty red magic hit your chest, I thought—I thought I was going to watch you die! I just got you, Cassian! What if he sliced your throat? What if you never woke up? I can't do this if you're going to throw your life away like that, I can't—
