Raven's POV

Wednesday night, I sat alone in my room staring at the ceiling. Luna Vera had tried to get me to come down for dinner, but I couldn't face them, I couldn't face anyone. The loneliness felt like it was crushing me from the inside out.

"You're not alone," Breeze said gently. "I'm here."

"I know," I said. "But sometimes that doesn't feel like enough."

"Why not?" she asked.

"Because you're part of me," I said. "You have to be here, you don't have a choice."

"That's not true," Breeze said. "I could make your life miserable if I wanted to and fight you every step of the way, but I don't. I choose to support you and be here for you."

I hadn't thought about it that way before.

"Thank you," I said. "For choosing me."

"Always," she said.

I got up and looked at myself in the mirror. My face was puffy from crying, my hair was a mess, but underneath all that I could see something else. Something I hadn't noticed before. I looked stronger somehow, like I had been through hel

Raven's POV Friday morning, I woke up before dawn feeling restless. Breeze had been pushing at me all night trying to get my attention. I finally gave in and got out of bed. "What do you want?" I asked her. "We need to connect," she said. "Really connect. Not just talking, but bonding." "How do we do that?" I asked. "Go to the forest," she said. "Find a quiet place, then I'll show you." I got dressed in comfortable clothes and snuck out of the house. The forest behind our property was dark and peaceful. I walked until I found a clearing with a fallen log where I could sit. "Now what?" I asked. "Close your eyes," Breeze instructed. "Take deep breaths and focus on feeling me inside you." I did as she said. At first, I just felt awkward sitting alone in the dark with my eyes closed, but gradually I started to sense something. A presence that was both me and not me at the same time. "That's me," Breeze said softly. "Can you feel it?" "Yeah," I said. "It's like you're right her

Raven's POV Thursday afternoon, the school held a mandatory assembly for all seniors. I tried to skip it, but Luna Vera got a call from the principal saying attendance was required. So I went, even though I knew it would be awful. I sat in the back row hoping to stay invisible. Alaric was at the front with some other students helping set up chairs. I texted him that I was there, and he gave me a thumbs-up from across the room. The assembly started with the principal talking about graduation requirements and college applications. I tried to pay attention, but my back was hurting and the baby kept kicking my ribs. Then the principal introduced the student council to talk about the senior prom. Luella walked up on stage, wearing a tight dress that showed off her perfect figure. Everyone clapped, and she smiled like a beauty queen. "Thank you everyone," she said into the microphone. "As you know, prom is in two months and we need to finalize the theme and venue, but before we get in

Raven's POV Tuesday morning started normal enough. Alaric walked me to school like he had been doing all week, and we went our separate ways after first period. I was heading to my locker when I noticed a group of girls huddled together whispering and looking at their phones. When they saw me, they quickly put their phones away and scattered. Something about the way they looked at me made my stomach drop. I got to my locker and opened it. Inside was a printout of a picture. Someone had photoshopped my face onto a much larger body and written "Whale Watching Season" across the top and underneath it said "Coming Soon, Baby Whale." I crumpled it up and threw it in the trash trying to ignore the burning in my eyes. This wasn't the first cruel note I had gotten, but it still hurt. During lunch, I sat in my usual spot in the library. Alaric was late, which was unusual. That's when I heard raised voices outside the library. I got up and peeked through the door. Alaric had three guys co

Raven's POV Monday morning, I forced myself to go back to school. I couldn't hide forever and missing more days would only make things worse. Alaric was waiting for me at the front entrance as he promised. "You ready for this?" he asked. "Not really," I said. "But I don't have a choice." We walked in together and I felt everyone staring at me. Whispers followed us down the hallway but nobody approached. Having Alaric by my side kept most people away. During the break between classes, I went to my locker to grab my math book. That's when I felt someone standing too close behind me. "Raven Valkhor," a voice said. "We need to talk." I turned around and saw Jake Bramwell leaning against the lockers next to mine. He was tall, with dark hair and a smile that never reached his eyes. I knew who he was, but we had never spoken before. "I don't think we have anything to talk about," I said, closing my locker. "Oh I think we do," he said, blocking my path. "See, I've been hearing som

Raven's POV I didn't go to school on Friday, I couldn't face anyone after what Dante said to me. Instead, I stayed in my room with the door locked and the curtains closed. I pulled out my journal. I needed to get everything out of my head before it consumed me, so I started writing about the confrontation with Dante and how his words had cut so deep. I wrote about how worthless he made me feel and how scared I was for the future. I put down the pen and closed my eyes. Breeze had been more active, vocal and present lately. It was like she was trying to tell me something but I didn't know what. "What are you sensing?" I asked her. "Danger," she said immediately. "Something bad is coming." "What kind of bad?" I asked sitting up. "I don't know yet," she said. "But I can feel it." "Like a storm building on the horizon." "Is it about Dante?" I asked. "Partly," she said. "But it's bigger than him, there are others involved." "Luella?" I guessed. "Yes," Breeze said. "And her m
