Chapter 7

Author: Washing Wheat
"You're in charge of the warehouse's security system, Mr. Walsh. I believe you're well aware of what this number means."

Greg's smile froze. There was panic in his eyes, but he quickly calmed down to deny everything. "That's complete nonsense!" He pointed at me and said to everyone else, "Are you sure you want to listen to him? What does a stockkeeper know about a system's records? Anyone would know how to make up these numbers. It's clear that the problem is with the equipment! Stop trying to stall for time with your nonsense!"

"Are you sure?" I laughed coldly and turned to look at Lynn, who looked taken aback, while ignoring him. "Can you help me with something, Lynn?" My tone was calm.

Lynn was surprised but nodded.

"Can you get your laptop from your car and connect to the warehouse's main security camera via data cable?"

"What are you trying to do?" Lynn looked cautious.

"I'm trying to pull backend records from the system."

"That's impossible!" Greg suddenly screamed. "Backend records can only be viewed with the highest authority’s permission! The only people who have the password are the technicians of this security system model. What does a stockkeeper like him know?!"

Greg's reaction was so extreme that even Tony started to realize something was not right. His dark gaze moved between Greg and me.

Lynn was hesitating. She looked at Greg's emotional outburst and then at my calm demeanor. She clenched her teeth in the end and said, "All right." Lynn turned to run out the door and quickly returned with a pink laptop. She swiftly set up the data cable as per my request.

"Click on the terminal interface," I said, "and make sure the connection parameters are accurate."

Lynn's fingers flew across the keyboard, and very soon, the black operating interface popped up.

"Type in the password now."

I took a deep breath and told her a string of numbers and symbols. After I was done with the last digit, Lynn's finger paused above the 'Enter' key. She looked up at me in shock. She knew this password well.

The first half of the password was the warehouse system's code name, but the second half was her mentor's name. The numbers in the middle were the year her mentor had taken part in designing this system. It was also a hidden code her mentor had mentioned to her in private, which should not have been used as a password.

However, she did not hesitate as she hit the 'Enter' key hard.

A notification appeared instantly on the screen. She was able to access the system. A backend interface not seen before immediately appeared, full of data records. Greg turned ghostly pale.

"Click on the last activity record," I said.

Lynn nodded and clicked on the file. Every line of the record was displayed clearly, and I pointed at the last few records. "Look here. Someone logged into the warehouse system yesterday afternoon at 3.15 PM via a remote maintenance port. The login belongs to an administrator. That person turned off the alarm system in Warehouse 1 and temporarily opened up the back door of the loading dock.

"This was when the item was stolen."

Lynn immediately checked the origin of the login, and her head jerked up the next second. She glared at Greg. "This IP address belongs to the intranet of South City University."

Greg was a visiting professor of South City University.

Everyone in the warehouse immediately turned to look at him.

However, everything had changed now. One night, I received a call from Samantha. Her voice was trembling with excitement on the other end of the call. "Dad! Dad! You're famous now!""What do you mean, I'm famous?" I was puzzled. "I shared your story of recovering the lost warehouse items and apprehending the real culprit behind the theft on our university's forum as an essay, and it started to trend! More than 100,000 people have clicked on it, and even our dean has read it!"My lecturer gave me full marks and told all our coursemates to use it as reading material. He said that this was the best example of real-life work experience combined with a strong sense of responsibility." She sounded happy and proud, a side of her I had never seen before. I started to tear up as I held the phone. The feeling of being admired by my own daughter was more fulfilling than earning hundreds of thousands of dollars or being promoted to a higher management position. That weekend, Samantha mad

"Three times of $500,000 is $1.5 million. Please confirm that the final investigation report signed by Mr. Walsh is the final decision of the warehouse as well, Mr. Lowry."Percy was no fool. He saw how confident I was acting and the pale look on Greg's face, and he immediately understood what was going on. "M-Mr. Walsh, this…""I… I…" Greg was breaking out in a cold sweat. He pointed at me and yelled angrily, "Y-you're taking this too far! This is extortion!"However, I ignored him. I flung away my tools and took out a portable camera from my pocket to attach it to my phone. I reached the camera out toward the crucial pathway of the warehouse and the pallet tracks. The screen on my phone clearly indicated the drag marks, footprints, and the route where the goods were moved during the time of the crime. I raised my phone to Percy. "These tracks show that the provisions stolen had been moved from a warehouse zone internally using the pallet pathway, and someone had tampered with th

Greg reached out pretentiously to shake my hand. "I see you're here, Mr. Leigh. I've heard a lot about you. Let's do this together!"I did not take his hand and only nodded at him. After that, I started to look around the scene of the crime. The problem was simple. Someone had secretly raised the threshold of the warehouse's night security surveillance system, delaying the alarm by several hours. Also, the small footprint and tracks made by pushing the pallet pointed to a route that indicated an inside job. After long hours of observation and analysis, I discovered Greg and Simon's joint report had exaggerated the issue by indicating that the warehouse's management system had malfunctioned. They recommended replacing all the surveillance and alarm systems, which would cost several hundred thousand dollars. I immediately realized this was entrapment.Greg knew that I would discover how the theft was carried out, and he was sure that as someone who would take action right away, I woul

Simon was authoritative with me and treated me like I was still the subordinate he could order around. A former colleague who had been sidelined along with me by our former colleagues years ago gently tugged on my sleeve and said in a low voice, "Please help us out, Jason. The factory manager will cancel our bonus this month and penalize us with a fine if we can't find the provisions."I looked at his pleading expression and turned to look at Simon's annoying face. My subsequent silence frustrated Simon, and he got impatient. "What's this, Jason? Now that you've made it, you're starting to look down on your former colleagues?" He got increasingly loud, "Don't forget who helped you become the person you are today. You can't turn your back on us by being an ungrateful b*stard!" His words made me laugh. I stood up slowly and walked toward him. "I think you've gotten something wrong, Mr. Carter. I'm the one who made myself the person I am today, not you. Moreover, I remember how you ann

"All I need is 10% control over the internal departments, while you take charge of the rest, but I want full control over human resources, finance, and special projects. I want senior employees who possess real abilities and understand the techniques of the job to have a place where they can work with peace of mind, pride, and respect."Tony was taken aback by what I said. Aside from the look of astonishment on his face, there was also sincere respect. He understood that power and control were never what I wanted. What I wanted was respect and a platform to pass down a craft that would potentially be abandoned in this modern era.He was silent for a long time before giving me a deep yet solemn bow. "I'm truly in awe of you, Mr. Leigh."I became the person in charge of the company's newly established safety inspection and track analysis department, and news of it spread like wildfire throughout the industry. A low-level off-duty stockkeeper had become the most respected person of a p

All I found were minor scratches and some soil left behind on the door crack. I bent down and followed the track across the ground and around the corner of the wall, finally finding a very small piece of torn cloth. The cloth had been stepped on by the specific footprint and had oil stains on it. It was confirmation that someone who worked at the warehouse left it behind. This had been a success! I had used an almost unnoticed clue to find the true culprit behind this theft. My colleagues cheered."That's incredible!""You're really something, Mr. Leigh!""Unbelievable! That's amazing!"Everyone was hugging each other as if they had just achieved a great victory. Lynn's eyes were red as she ran over to me to grab my hands tightly with so much force that it felt like it could crush my bones. I pulled my hands away from hers and said calmly, "We shouldn't be celebrating so early. Locking down on the suspect is just the first step. We still need to continue tracking the culprit to ca
