Clara's POV

The hospital was on the eastern edge of the city.

It was not the same building I had died in, which had been in a different city entirely, different walls and different corridors and a different white ceiling. But it was a hospital and I was coming to it as a donor advisor and board member for a new women's health initiative that had been proposed by one of the foundation's partner organizations.

I had not avoided hospitals since the rebirth. I had been in plenty of them. Eleanor's

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   What He Knew

Clara's POVThe national policy recommendations were adopted. Not all of them. Four of the twelve we had proposed in the first two years of the panel's work were incorporated into legislation. Of those four, two were the ones I had argued most consistently for in the panel meetings: the new measurement frameworks and the funding ring-fence for economic retraining programs. It was not everything. Policy work never produced everything. What it produced was incremental and structural and the structures would still be standing when the people who built them were gone.Asha called me the morning the legislation passed."Four out of twelve," she said. "That is a better hit rate than any panel I have worked on in twenty years.""The other eight are still in the framework," I said. "They did not disappear. They are the next conversation.""Yes," she said. "That is how this works.""And the measurement frameworks," I said. "Once those are being used consistently the data will make the other ei

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   From Here You Have to Trust

Clara's POVLuke submitted his university application. He was seventeen and he had been working toward this for years with the focused certainty of someone who had known what they wanted since they were old enough to know that knowing what you wanted was useful. He applied to the engineering program. Structural. He wrote his personal statement himself, which I knew because he sent me a draft and asked if it was honest enough.I read it.It was honest. More than honest. It was the work of a young man who had thought carefully about what had shaped him and who said so directly without performing either gratitude or grievance. He wrote about the bridges in his town. About Adrian's river crossing. About the competition entry. About a woman who had told him real engineering was about what structures did for people.I called him after I read it."It is exactly right," I said."You are in it," he said."I know," I said. "I am honored to be.""I would not be applying to this program without y

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   The Line Moved

Clara's POVCassie fell in love. She told me the way she told me everything now, directly and with the mixture of pride and vulnerability that had replaced the old performed versions of both. His name was Daniel. He was a landscape architect she had worked with on a project that involved outdoor community spaces at two of the foundation sites. He was quiet in the way people were quiet when they were full rather than empty and he had apparently spent six months working on the same project as Cassie before she had noticed that he had been paying very careful attention to her the entire time."He just suddenly existed," she said. "One day he was a colleague and then one day he was not just a colleague and I have no idea when the line moved.""Tell me about him," I said. She told me. He was patient and thoughtful and he made her laugh in a way that she said was different from the performative laughter she had spent years producing because it was expected and much more like the real kind t

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   You Make The Reason

Silas's POVThe book was published.Asha and Clara's book. It arrived in the world without the marketing that popular books received because it was not a popular book and they had not tried to make it one. It arrived in academic and policy circles and within those circles it arrived like something that had been needed for a long time. The first significant review called it a foundational reframing of the problem. The second review was more specific and more impressed. The third was a dissection from an economist who disagreed with two of the measurement frameworks on technical grounds and the response to the dissent that Clara and Asha wrote and published was, by most accounts in the field, the more convincing document.Clara read me the response before it was published. She read it at the kitchen table after dinner with Eleanor asleep upstairs and the house quiet around us and her voice was the same voice she used for everything, precise and direct and without any excess weight. When

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   We Opened the Door

Clara's POVNick and Luke visited the foundation together.Luke had been asking for months and Nick had agreed with the particular ease of a man who no longer needed to calculate whether agreeing to something was safe. They came to the original site on a Thursday morning. I was there to meet them. Luke walked through the entrance and read the words above the door with the expression of someone who had seen them quoted but was now standing under them."She wrote that," he said. He had heard the story over the years in pieces."Yes," I said. "My mother."He read them again. Then he nodded once and walked in.I showed them the orientation room. The resource library that had grown to over two hundred books. The small offices where legal advisors and career counsellors worked. The room with the children's area that was painted in strong colors because Cassie had decided that children in difficult circumstances deserved strong colors.Nick walked through quietly. He was not performing anyth

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   For Her

Clara's POVDr. Bhatt and I finished the book in the second year of working on it.It was not a popular press book. It was academic in its structure and uncompromising in its arguments and we had not softened either of those things to make it more accessible because making it more accessible would have required making it less true, and there were already too many books that were accessible and imprecise. It was also the clearest thing I had ever been part of producing. The argument at its center was one I had thought about for years before I was able to articulate it in the language of economics: that the standard frameworks used to measure women's economic participation systematically undercounted and undervalued the work that women had historically done and continued to do, that this undercounting was not accidental but structural, and that every policy built on those frameworks was therefore built on a distorted foundation. We proposed new measurement frameworks. Specific, testable

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   I Should Have Dealt With It Then

Silas POV"Good morning, Mr. Luther." Her voice was more lukewarm than the coffee she handed to me, easing out like an automated response from a machine rather than my enthusiastic secretary."Morning, Miss Moore. How was your night?""Fine, sir. And yours?""Well..."I kept up with the small talk

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   When Whispers Turned To Respect

Clara’s POVAs I walked past several cubicles, there were whispers. For the first time in my life, it wasn't mockery that followed me but rather a hushed admiration. After all, everybody had heard about me—the woman that had confronted the untouchable Marcus Luther and survived unscathed. At least

Clara's POVI left Silas Luther’s office with a weight on my chest. The tension that had built up there had lessened, and it felt like I could finally breathe once I was past his door. Even with the intricate wooden door standing between us, I still felt as if his piercing eyes could see right thro
