Chapter 2

Penulis: Roald Schooler
That night, because Jonathan did not answer Rosalin's call, she turned on the gas and killed herself by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Later, Jonathan found out that Rosalin had a panic attack and just wanted his company.

He brought Rosalin's urn back and hugged it in his arms for three whole days. After three days, he resumed his normal self.

He would visit my father after work. He would give me flowers. He would smile at me even brighter than before.

Back then, I thought that he had completely let go of the woman who should not have even been in our marriage in the first place.

The day my father got discharged, Jonathan had even planned him a welcome-home party.

Little did we know that he had poisoned every single dish.

My father was the first one to die. I was fighting for my life, trying to escape, but he grabbed me by my hair and dragged me down to the underground cellar.

He forced me to look at Rosalin's funeral portrait.

"If it weren't for you and your damn father, Rosalin wouldn't have died! Why did your father have to collapse that day? Why did you make me do things for you when Rosalin needed me the most?"

I was in so much pain I screamed. I wanted to explain myself. I wanted to say that my father had only felt sorry for him. He had contacted an old comrade, hoping to help his son-in-law secure his official position.

However, my father already had an underlying disease. He had drunk too much when he asked for a favor, which was what caused him to have cerebral hemorrhage.

Jonathan was only one step away from an official confirmation.

I knelt before Rosalin's urn, trying with all my might to explain.

However, Jonathan was crying so hard his eyes were reddened. He would not listen. He stabbed me right in the heart with a knife multiple times.

"The Stern family has always looked down on me! Why can't you let me go? Let me and Rosalin go! Now that Rosalin is dead, I'll make everyone pay with their lives!"

I lay sprawled out on the floor as my breathing gradually stopped. He kicked me aside, then stabbed himself right in the heart.

"Rosalin, I'll never let you be alone."

Only at that moment did I realize that he had never once let her go.

A few years ago, Rosalin had been followed after work. She had called Jonathan for help.

All because of a light scratch on Rosalin's face, he almost beat the guy half to death.

Back then, Jonathan was just one step away from getting an official confirmation, but he missed his chance because of Rosalin.

I was blinded by love. I was so insistent on holding onto what has never belonged to me.

When I came around once more, the narrow road behind me was already filled with traffic.

I had no time to lose. I took a deep breath and knelt in front of Francis.

"Francis, it's all my fault, but my father is innocent. Can you please clear a path and send him to the hospital?"

I prostrated myself and bowed to the ground in front of him, baffling the other surrounding drivers.

"My father has lost consciousness due to a cerebral hemorrhage. His life is at stake! I'm begging you, only you have such powers!"

Under the whispers of others, Francis snickered, "Jonathan was right. You'd do anything to gain attention."

The ache on my forehead was not as painful as the heartbreak in my heart. I looked up and Francis spat at me, looking at me with contempt.

Then, he grabbed the loudspeaker from the patrol car and shouted to the crowd, "Don't be fooled by this lady! Her father with cerebral hemorrhage? He's faking it!

"Back then, she forced her way into marrying my friend. She had her father, some bureau's chief, force my friend to break up with his childhood sweetheart! She even threatened to ruin his career if he didn't!

"Now, she's just putting on this act for attention! If you ask me, she's just a homewrecker trying to sabotage someone else's relationship!"

The crowd erupted as they cast me disgusted looks.

"Tsk. Unbelievable!"

"Who would've thought that she would team up with her father to do such a thing. Isn't this abusing public resources?"

My heart dropped. I never would have thought that Francis, no, Jonathan, would be so heartless.

When Rosalin left, she cried so hard as if someone had died. However, after facing her pleas, Jonathan did not spare her a shred of mercy."Don't you ever expect me to come and see you again! We're done forever!"His ruthless words shattered the last of her composure. She shrieked hysterically, completely losing her mind."Who the hell do you think you are?! You slept with me, yet you won't acknowledge me. You're just clinging onto the glory of a bureau chief's daughter! Open your eyes and look! Does she even want you anymore?"I shut my eyes to hide the disappointment in my eyes. It turned out that they had done so much more than I had imagined.Jonathan, who had been exposed, yelled at her furiously. "Then, why did you have to lie to me?"Rosalin left, leaving Jonathan and I in the hospital corridors. He rubbed his hands awkwardly. "Daphne… I never thought that your father would turn out this way because of me. I-I'm… I'm sorry."After a moment's hesitation, he slapped himse

Albert continued, "I blame myself. I was the reason why Michael had drank so much."Jonathan was completely pale. "Sir, what do you mean? Did you intend to promote me?"Albert glared at him in disappointment. "Michael came to me to ask me to give you a promotion!"Once something like that was brought into the open, every procedure became more complicated. My father had kept it quiet precisely because he did not want rumors spreading. However, Jonathan had left his post too many times for Rosalin over the years. Albert wanted to help, but his hands were tied.I figured Jonathan would understand. After Albert left, Jonathan's face had lost all its color that he almost toppled over. He looked at me as if that was the first time he had properly known me."Daphne…""Jonathan, I'm really feeling unwell! I feel terrible!" Rosalin's shrill voice cut him off. She clutched her chest and fell into his arms. Was she having a panic attack again?I grabbed Rosalin and smiled at her. "Perfe

Jonathan's expression shifted as he stammered, "I-It doesn't matter anymore anyway."Then, he turned to me with a frown and said, "What's the point in saying all this now, Daphne? You've already wasted so much of my time! How are you going to make it up to me?"You didn't fulfill the promises you made to me before your marriages, so why should I love you? At least, with Rosalin, I feel much more relaxed. You only disgust me."He glared at me angrily, making me freeze on the spot. Why did he hate me so much?I stared at him for a long time before taking the divorce papers I had prepared some time ago out of my bag."Since I disgust you, we should just split ways."Jonathan looked at the divorce papers for a long time. When he looked up at me once more, his eyes were gleaming with mixed emotions."Are you for real?"I could not understand. Why was he still hesitating at that point?"Of course, after the divorce, we'll split our properties equally. I won't take a cent more. Of c

Since Jonathan never loved me, everything I did was wrong. In the end, me, the evil villain of the story, got nothing at all.A week later, my father was finally transferred from the ICU to a normal patient's ward. Only then did I truly relax.I had not slept much in a few days. My body was utterly exhausted. I walked out of the hospital to head home to get some rest.My vision suddenly saw black as a heavy slap landed on my face."Daphne Stern, you tramp!"Jonathan looked furious as he slapped me again. Rosalin stood behind him, watching things unfold with interest. The slap caught me off guard and I fell to the ground. The hospital security guards by the side immediately pulled him back.Jonathan yelled at me, "How dare you report me?! I lost my job! Are you happy now? All these years, what did your useless father do for me? You and your parents are just here to torment me!"Jonathan had slapped me so hard that I started seeing stars. I could even taste blood in my mouth.A

Jonathan and Rosalin knew each other since they were children. After high school, Rosalin left to study abroad. She only returned the year when Jonathan and I met.Rosalin suffered from psychological issues. Whenever her condition flared up, she would cry and call for Jonathan to see her. Once she was cleared of it, she would then say that he was the husband of another woman, and that they should maintain a distance. They always had ties between them, with Rosalin having the complete rein of the strings.Time and time again, just a single phone call from her would be enough to get Jonathan to leave my side.My fingers dug deep into my palms, numbing pain spread through me.Right at that moment, Dr. Dunn exited the operation theater in a hurry."Where is the patient's family?"I quickly ran over, my heart thumping wildly. "Dr. Dunn, how is my father?"He lowered his gaze and let out a long sigh. "He's no longer in danger, but he needs to be kept in the ICU to be observed for a

Francis instantly realized that something was wrong. He looked terrified.Dr. Dunn shoved Francis, still in shock. "You idiot! Now do you believe that this is real?"Francis soon came to his senses. He knew that my father's life was truly at stake. He immediately wiped his face, switched on the sirens on his car, and moved his car side."Everyone, please clear a path for this patient!" He squeezed through traffic, finally opening up a path. I followed behind his car, while Dr. Dunn called the hospital on the way there. At the hospital entrance, medical staff placed my father, still bleeding from the mouth, onto a gurney and wheeled him into the emergency room.Dr. Dunn quickly got changed while still cursing at Francis."If he would only come to his senses earlier! How stupid was he to waste so much time!"Sitting on the bench in front of the operation theater, I was soaked in sweat. The nurses entered and exited carried a huge basin of gauzes covered in blood. They started r
