The wind over the Rogue Lands never truly slept.

It moved like something alive—restless, sharp, carrying whispers of everything that had been lost there. Broken oaths. Forgotten names. Blood that had soaked into the earth until even the soil seemed to remember pain.

Seraphina stood at the edge of the ridge, her cloak pulled tightly around her shoulders, watching the horizon blur into a pale smear of dawn. The sun did not rise cleanly here. It struggled, as though even light feared crossing into this cursed territory.

Behind her, the small healer’s settlement was waking.

Smoke curled from clay chimneys. Someone was already grinding herbs. A child coughed, then laughed. Life—fragile, stubborn life—persisted in a place meant to erase it.

Seraphina adjusted the satchel at her hip and inhaled slowly.

“Still standing watch like you expect the King himself to appear over the hills?”

The voice came from behind her, calm but edged with amusement.

She didn’t turn immediately. “He doesn’t need to appear over the hills,” she said quietly. “Men like Killian don’t announce themselves. They arrive when you’ve stopped looking.”

A soft rustle of boots on dry earth.

Kael stepped beside her, folding his arms. He was tall, lean, with the kind of stillness that came from someone who had learned how to survive violence rather than escape it. His eyes followed hers toward the horizon.

“You’ve been saying that for five years,” he murmured. “And he hasn’t come.”

Seraphina’s fingers tightened slightly on the strap of her satchel.

“That doesn’t mean he won’t.”

Kael studied her for a long moment. There was something careful in his expression—not pity, never that—but understanding. He had been one of the first to find her after she was cast into the Rogue Lands. Half-dead, burning with fever, and carrying a secret she had never spoken aloud.

A secret that had grown into a child who now slept in the settlement’s inner hut, unaware of the storm surrounding his existence.

Kael exhaled. “You can’t keep living like you’re waiting for execution.”

“I’m not waiting,” Seraphina replied. “I’m preparing.”

A silence stretched between them.

Below the ridge, the settlement’s healer bell rang once—sharp, metallic. A signal. Someone needed help.

Seraphina turned immediately.

“I’ll go,” Kael said.

But she was already moving. “No. That tone—it’s not a normal injury.”

She descended the ridge quickly, boots crunching against gravel, her senses sharpening the way they always did when something felt wrong. The air itself had changed. Heavy. Pressurized. Like the land was holding its breath.

By the time she reached the central hut, a small crowd had gathered.

Whispers. Fear. Confusion.

Seraphina pushed through them.

On the ground inside lay a man she did not recognize.

That alone was rare. Strangers did not wander into the Rogue Lands unless they were fleeing something worse—or bringing it with them.

He was tall, cloaked, his face partially hidden. But it was not his appearance that made Seraphina freeze.

It was the symbol burned into his armor.

A silver crest.

Twin wolves circling a shattered crown.

The mark of the Royal Blood Guard.

The world around her seemed to narrow.

Someone behind her whispered, “He’s alive… barely.”

Seraphina stepped forward slowly, her pulse steadying into something dangerously controlled. She knelt beside him.

“Move the others back,” she said.

Kael hesitated. “Seraphina—”

“Now.”

Her tone left no room for argument.

The crowd dispersed reluctantly. Kael remained, but even he stepped back a few paces, eyes locked on the unconscious man.

Seraphina pressed two fingers to his neck.

Weak pulse.

Too weak.

She pulled back his hood.

And the air left her lungs.

Not because she recognized him.

But because of what he carried in his hand.

A sealed royal letter.

Her name written across the wax.

Seraphina Vale.

The letters blurred for a moment as her vision tightened. Her throat went dry.

“No…” she whispered, barely audible.

Kael stepped closer. “What is it?”

But she was already breaking the seal.

The wax cracked with a sound that felt too loud in the silence.

She unfolded the parchment.

And read.

Her face did not change at first.

Then something in her expression shifted—something small, almost invisible. But Kael saw it. He always saw it when she made decisions that could not be undone.

Seraphina stood slowly.

“What does it say?” Kael asked.

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she looked down at the unconscious guard.

And for the first time in five years, she said his name.

“Killian has summoned me.”

The words did not belong in this place.

They hung in the air like poison.

Kael went still. “That’s impossible. He exiled you.”

“Yes,” she said quietly. “He did.”

Her grip tightened on the letter.

“But now he’s inviting me back.”

A cold laugh escaped Kael, though there was no humor in it. “That’s not an invitation. That’s a trap.”

Seraphina folded the letter carefully, almost gently.

“I know.”

“Then you won’t go.”

This time, she finally looked at him.

And there it was—the truth she had been carrying for years, pressed into the shape of her eyes.

“I don’t have a choice.”

Kael shook his head. “You always have a choice.”

Seraphina’s voice dropped. “Not when it’s about him.”

Silence again.

The unconscious guard stirred slightly, a weak groan escaping his lips.

Seraphina knelt once more, this time placing her hand over his wound. A faint glow pulsed beneath her palm—warm, golden energy threading into broken flesh. The man’s breathing steadied.

Kael watched, jaw tight.

“You’re healing a soldier who came from the man who tried to kill you,” he said.

“He didn’t send him to kill me,” she replied softly. “If he wanted me dead, I would already be dead.”

Kael let out a sharp breath. “That’s not comfort. That’s worse.”

Seraphina didn’t respond.

Because somewhere deep inside her, she knew he was right.

Killian did not make mistakes.

If this man had been sent here alive, carrying her name…

Then it meant Killian wanted her to know something.

Or worse—

He wanted her to return.

The guard suddenly gasped, eyes flying open.

Chaos flickered across his face as he tried to sit up.

Seraphina pressed him down gently. “Don’t move.”

His gaze locked onto her.

Recognition hit instantly.

“L-Lady Seraphina…” he rasped.

Kael shifted forward, hand instinctively moving toward his weapon.

Seraphina didn’t flinch. “Speak.”

The guard swallowed hard. Fear made his voice uneven.

“The King… he’s dying.”

The words struck harder than any physical blow.

For a moment, even the wind seemed to stop.

Kael’s voice broke the silence first. “That’s a lie.”

But Seraphina did not speak.

Because she was staring at the guard’s trembling hands.

At the sincerity in his fear.

At the truth that did not feel like truth—but also did not feel like deception.

The guard continued, weaker now. “He refused all healers. He said only you—only you could—”

He coughed violently, blood spilling at his lips.

Seraphina gripped his shoulder, stabilizing him. “Why me?”

The guard looked at her with something almost like desperation.

“Because the child… he knows.”

The world fractured quietly.

Seraphina went still.

Kael’s voice was distant now. “What child?”

But Seraphina already knew.

Her fingers went cold.

And somewhere far beyond the Rogue Lands, in a palace built of stone and silence, a boy she had never met was about to change everything.

The guard’s grip loosened.

His eyes fluttered.

And before he slipped unconscious again, he whispered the final piece of the message.

“The heir is awake.”

Seraphina stepped back slowly.

For the first time in five years, the past did not feel like something behind her.

It felt like something coming toward her.

Fast.

And unstoppable.

Kael moved closer. “Seraphina… tell me what that means.”

But she couldn’t answer.

Because deep inside her chest, something she had buried long ago had begun to stir.

Not fear.

Not anger.

But recognition.

Far away, in a kingdom she had sworn never to see again…

A child had opened his eyes.

And the crown she thought had been broken…

Was still waiting to be claimed.

Five years later...The Sacred Mountains had changed.Where watchtowers had once stood scarred by war, gardens now bloomed with wildflowers. The training fields still echoed with the clash of wooden swords, but alongside them stood classrooms, libraries, and orchards planted by children from every kingdom. The banners of the packs still flew proudly, yet none stood higher than another. The Council of Alphas had kept its promise.Peace had not been perfect. There had been disagreements, harsh winters, and difficult decisions. But no kingdom had raised its claws against another. Every challenge had been met around the council table instead of on the battlefield. The world was healing, just as Mercy had promised. The first light of dawn spilled across the mountains. Sixteen-year-old Aiden stood on the eastern balcony of Blackthorn Castle, the morning breeze tugging gently at his dark cloak. He had grown taller. Instead, they surrounded the central square in a great circle, each banner equal beneath the silver light of the Tree Beyond the Sky.Its branches shimmered brighter than they had in centuries. Morning greeted the travelers with a sky washed in silver and gold. The Path of Remembrance stretched before them once more, but it no longer felt like the mysterious road that had tested their hearts. The silver mist had thinned, allowing warm sunlight to filter through the towering trees. Birds perched among the glowing branches, filling the forest with songs that had not been heard since the First Age.For the first time since entering the Valley of the First Night... no one felt watched. The path had accepted them.Aiden skipped ahead with Leo racing beside him. Every few steps, the little silver wolf darted into the grass before returning proudly with a feather, a flower, or a smooth stone clutched between his teeth."I think Leo believes he's collecting treasures."Seraphina laughed. For the first time in what felt like forever... the journey home did not begin with a battle. It began with laughter. The Valley of the First Night no longer resembled the desolate place they had first entered. The black lake had become a mirror of the heavens, its waters so clear that the stars seemed to float beneath its surface. Silver flowers covered the hillsides, and birds with shimmering white feathers flew freely through the morning sky.The air itself felt lighter. The valley had finally been released from the burden it had carried since the dawn of time.Aiden stood at the edge of the lake, skipping small stones across the water. Each bounce created rings of silver light that spread farther than should have been possible.Leo chased every ripple as if it were a living thing, barking happily whenever one slipped beyond his reach.Lumen sat nearby, watching them with quiet fascination. "I've never done that before."Aiden looked over. "Skipped stones?"Lumen nodded. "I've neve
