Chapter 5

作者: Bright Lights
When I handed the proposal to John, the surprise in his eyes was impossible to miss.

But in the end, all it took was one sentence from Claire:

"I don't want Naomi using this as an excuse to cling to you."

And just like that, he abandoned my proposal without hesitation and chose a far more conservative version instead.

The company still won the bid in the end, but the partnership with Sheldon Corporation was plagued with constant friction because the proposal lacked polish.

As for my version, I had thought it would never see the light of day again.

Yet after being reborn, it became the very thing that secured my footing in the marketing department.

The day the smart home project won the bid, the way everyone in the department addressed me completely changed. No more fake smiles and sarcastic 'Ms. West.' From that day on, they called my name sincerely.

Hearing it, I could not help feeling emotional.

Back in my previous life, I spent all my time chasing after John and trying to please him. I never imagined I would one day achieve something on my own.

From then on, I worked like someone possessed.

For a long stretch of time, I was full of energy every single day. I left early, came home late, and whenever I returned to Moonlake Villa, I would shower and go straight to sleep.

Until one day, I finished work earlier than usual and came home to find John sitting at the dining table eating dinner.

I froze for a moment.

"John… don't tell me you've been living here this whole time?"

He lifted his eyes calmly and looked at me as if the answer was obvious.

That only confused me more.

After hesitating for a second, I walked over and asked politely, in the spirit of maintaining a cooperative relationship:

"Did you and Claire have a fight? Do you need me to help smooth things over?"

Not that he should actually say yes. I was just being polite.

John stared at me with a strange look in his eyes, his tone carrying a hint of frustration, like he was disappointed in someone hopeless.

"Naomi, do you really want me and Claire to end up together that badly?"

I was speechless.

What did he mean, I wanted it? Wasn't that already the reality?

I wanted to argue back, but seeing the expression on his face darken, I wisely kept my mouth shut.

The entire dinner was painfully awkward.

The moment it ended, I immediately got up to head upstairs, but John suddenly stopped me.

"There's a charity auction tomorrow. We need to attend together."

I nodded in understanding.

Got it. Time for the political marriage couple act again.

The next day, on the way to the auction, the car once again became a private space occupied by just the two of us.

I was just about to fall asleep when John suddenly handed me a catalog.

"These are tonight's auction items. If there's anything you like, tell me. I'll bid on it for you."

I raised a brow and accepted the catalog, but never opened it.

It was not that I lacked interest in the items.

I simply knew that whether I liked them or not, none of them would ever truly belong to me.

In my previous life, it had been this very same auction where I fell in love with a sapphire necklace.

After several rounds of bidding, John had decisively called for an unlimited bid.

At the time, everyone looked at me with envy. The internet was flooded with articles about how deeply John adored his wife.

When I received the sapphire necklace, I had been overwhelmed with happiness. I genuinely thought I had finally moved his heart.

But by the time our political marriage came to an end, when the West family went bankrupt and creditors chased me to the brink of collapse, I tried to use the necklace to pay off my debts.

That was when I learned the necklace John gave me had only ever been a fake.

The real sapphire necklace was worn around Claire's neck on the day she married him.

Remembering how desperate and broken I had been back then, I could not help letting out a self-mocking laugh.

Seeing that I never opened the catalog, John looked puzzled.

"What? Not interested in this auction?"

My tone remained calm.

"Interested or not, I still have to attend. The two of us showing up together is basically part of the job when it comes to a political marriage.

"Don't worry. I understand the rules. I won't make things difficult for you."

The damage had already been done. There was no way I could pretend none of it had happened. In this life, I had finally learned how to rely on myself, how to love myself and cherish my parents.I no longer needed John, nor did I crave his love anymore.Seeing the determination in my expression, the color drained from John's face as though all the light had suddenly left him."I understand now, Naomi. I owe you far too much. It's only natural that you can't forgive me."Not long after, his assistant led him away.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, watching his car disappear into the distance, my heart unexpectedly calm.Maybe this was the best ending the two of us could have hoped for.He no longer had to bury himself beneath unspoken burdens. And I no longer had to spend my life begging for his love.…Time slipped by in the blink of an eye.Over the next year, I continued leading the West Corporation forward, quickly turning it into an unshakable force in the new

The assistant led him into the office. The moment he saw me, undisguised admiration flashed across his eyes.Ever since being given a second chance at life, I had changed a great deal. I was no longer the naive and sheltered eldest daughter of the West family.Over the years, I had become decisive and ruthless in business. The softness I once carried had long since faded, replaced by a confidence that made me stand out wherever I went.John and I sat across from each other. When he finally spoke, his voice was slightly hoarse."Naomi, thank you for the evidence."I answered calmly, "No need to thank me. I'm only returning the favor for all the times you secretly helped the West family before."But John shook his head stubbornly."No, I still have to thank you. You don't know this, but back then, Claire's parents killed my parents to seize control of the Dyke Group. Then they pretended to be kind and took me into their home."For years, they used my age as an excuse to keep cont

The divorce went through quickly. The moment I picked up the pen and signed my name, the marriage alliance between John and me officially came to an end.As we walked out of the courthouse, John called out to me, like he wanted to say something. But before he could speak, Claire fluttered over to him like a brightly colored butterfly and threw herself into his arms.I did not care what he had wanted to say anyway. I had no interest in watching them act affectionate in front of me, so I got into my car and drove away. After the divorce, I poured all my energy into West Corporation. With the experience from my previous life, I successfully led the company into several new energy projects. The investments I had persuaded my parents to make in the sector earlier had now become the driving force behind West Corporation's growth. In less than six months, both domestic and overseas sales surpassed one hundred million. West Corporation became the industry's rising dark horse. At the ce

By the time I woke up, John was already gone from the villa. The only sign he had been there was the breakfast laid out neatly on the dining table.Mrs. Morgan walked over with a smile."You're awake, Mrs. Dyke? Mr. Dyke made this breakfast himself. Would you like to eat? I can heat it up for you."I looked at the breakfast in surprise.Across both my lifetimes, this was the first time I had ever known John could cook. But the dream from last night still lingered in my mind, leaving me with no appetite at all."No need. Just warm me a glass of milk."After finishing the milk, I drove to West Corporation for work. Not long after the car pulled onto the road, the steering wheel suddenly locked up.The vehicle lurched out of control like a wild horse, hurtling straight toward the roadside barrier.I instinctively slammed on the brakes. They had failed too.Bang! The impact exploded through the car as it crashed violently into the guardrail. The airbags burst open and slammed

I followed the direction of his finger and saw John slumped over the booth sofa. The collar of his black shirt had been tugged loose, and he was still absentmindedly clutching a wine glass in one hand.I walked over and tapped him on the shoulder."John, wake up. We're going home."He slowly lifted his head, eyes unfocused. Honestly, I doubted he could even tell who had come to pick him up.Because the first thing he said was, pitifully, "Honey… didn't you already leave me? Then why did you come back?"Honey? He probably meant Claire. He really was drunk out of his mind, to the point he could not even recognize me.I had no intention of pretending to be Claire. I simply stayed silent and helped him up. With the assistance of his friend, we finally managed to shove him into the passenger seat.Just as I was about to close the car door, John suddenly reached out and hooked a finger into the corner of my clothes.I looked down at him. His eyelashes were long, casting faint shado

For the first time, I realized I could not understand John at all.Back when I proudly called myself Mrs. Dyke and wanted us to act like a real married couple, he used the agreement from our arranged marriage against me: aside from public appearances, neither of us was allowed to interfere in the other's private life. In my previous life, he had even gone so far as to destroy my entire family just to avenge Claire. Now that I finally understood what this marriage really was, and where I stood in it, I only wanted the partnership between our families to proceed smoothly. Yet somehow, he was angry again, accusing me of failing in my duties as a wife.No matter what I chose, it was never what John wanted.I shoved him away hard, forcing distance between us, then looked at him coldly."John, we made things very clear before this marriage. Other than necessary public occasions, we stay out of each other's private lives. If I hadn't been worried about the media stirring up trouble and a
