Chapter 3

Author: Johnny Fisher
Warm blood sprayed across my face. Ryan's mouth hung open in terror as he pointed a trembling finger at me.

Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events. One after another, they pointed at me and screamed.

"Murder! The capitalist's killing people!"

Evelyn's face darkened with fury. She shoved me away hard, held Ryan in her arms, and roared, "Call 911!"

I stared coldly at the smug look on his face. My hands clenched at my sides without my realizing it.

After Ryan was loaded into the ambulance, Evelyn walked up to me, scowling. "You nearly got him killed. Happy now?"

The crowd erupted again. A new wave of insults came at me, and people started smashing things in anger.

Just as things were about to spiral out of control, I smirked. "You're saying I tried to kill him? Then let's pull the security footage and settle this in front of everyone. If I really stabbed Ryan, I'll go to prison."

The moment I said it, the angry crowd slowly quieted down.

Doubt even started showing up in the livestream chat of the people who'd been filming.

[No way. You guys are being manipulated. I don't think this guy's dumb enough to kill someone.]

[You never know, though.]

[Yeah, I don't think he's that stupid either. If anything, that other guy seemed a little unhinged.]

Evelyn stared straight at me, frowning hard. "Nathan, you're the CEO of Hayes Group. You could easily have the footage swapped.

"Ry is my student. If you want to hurt him, you'll have to go through me first."

Refusing to let it go, she picked up her phone, flipped the camera around, and made her accusation with red-rimmed eyes. "Nathan Hayes is my fiancé. Lately, he's been acting like a jealous little boy and has hurt a lot of people. As his fiancée, I apologize. But I won't cover for him. I want to be clear: everything he's done to my student Ryan is true.

"As for his interference with research funding and the attempted murder, I definitely won't defend him in court."

With that, Evelyn ended the livestream without hesitation and left with the group.

Someone still wanted to turn back and curse me out on her behalf, but she forced them out.

I stood there speechless. Owen swallowed nervously. "Mr. Hayes, less than a minute after the livestream ended, Hayes Group's stock dropped ten points."

I forced down the emotions churning inside me. "Contact the PR department. Get a statement ready. Fast."

But my statement couldn't keep up with how fast Evelyn and Ryan's smears spread.

Clickbait accounts went wild, maliciously editing videos of me "killing someone" and pulling funding.

My accounts were swarmed by armies of paid trolls and haters.

Some keyboard warriors even mailed me razor blades. People on the street called me "the vampire of academia."

Every project Hayes Group had been working on, even the contracts that had already been signed, was either pulled or hit with sky-high compensation demands.

As public outrage spiraled, my sister, Claire, called.

"Nathan, this got out of hand. Evelyn and the Monroes are paying off troll armies on every major platform and every lawyer in the city with any clout so no one will take your case.

"They're saying you deliberately sabotaged a major national project. People in government have even come asking questions. And those senior board members want you to apologize to the Monroes, agree to the marriage, and fix their cash-flow problem. You..."

I took a deep breath, hung up, and unblocked a number.

"Let's meet."

I turned and walked away without giving her the slightest chance to put on her sentimental one-woman show. After that, Monroe Group's stock dropped overnight, again and again, until there was nowhere left to fall.Hayes Group, on the other hand, rode the wave straight to the top and secured its place there for good.We caught every bit of that massive wave of attention.Five days later, I saw on the news that Evelyn had declared bankruptcy.Ryan was convicted of murder, fraud, and a string of other crimes and sentenced to life in prison without parole.Evelyn got dragged down with him and was sued in court again and again.A week later, she couldn't even afford a lawyer. Dressed in rags, she came looking for me.The next time I saw her, I was throwing a party on a yacht with a few hot girls in short shorts that Julian had introduced me to.Evelyn was working as a server, bringing us drinks.Someone recognized her and deliberately made things hard for her. They threw fruit at

I smirked at Ryan's ghost-white face. "So this is how I supposedly framed you? Mr. Cole, if there's something wrong with your eyes, go see a doctor."When I finished, Evelyn turned to Ryan, her face pale. The words squeezed out through her clenched teeth in disbelief. "Ryan, you lied to me. You fucking lied to me!"Terrified, Ryan threw his arms around her leg, only to be kicked a good twenty feet away."No, Evie! I did it all for you! It's just that I love you too much! Didn't you say you hated that rich jerk Nathan? Didn't you say what you hate most is being tied down? You even said the only reason you got close to him in the first place was to fix Monroe Group's cash-flow problem!""Shut up!" Evelyn's face turned bright red. She swung her hand and slapped him across the face.I watched the scene in front of me with contempt. So even her getting close to me back then had been deliberate. Her love for me had never been pure.It had always been tangled up with what she stood t

I found out he had no parents. He'd been drifting from place to place since he was a kid and had never even gone to college. In Harbor City, he'd conned people by passing himself off as a star student. Not only did he swindle wealthy, powerful families into ruin, he also destroyed the love life of one of Julian's sisters. So as soon as I told Julian, he immediately reached out to all the heirs and heiresses Ryan had conned, wherever they were.At that moment, Ryan's eyes brimmed with tears. He clutched my shoes and slammed his head against the floor over and over."I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Mr. Hayes, I know I was wrong! I pressured Professor Monroe into helping me with threats and bribes! My parents are seriously ill, and my whole village is too poor to afford medicine. Professor Monroe is our savior! She's a saint! She was willing to give us medicine for free, without charging a single cent!"Oh, God in heaven! If that doesn't make her a good person, I might as well die!"With that

The moment I finished, the first to speak was the man with the most clout in the room, Julian Prescott. His voice was cold. "Who the hell do you people think you are, picking on my friend? After today, every one of you had better come tell me which outlet you work for. Otherwise, if I have to find out for myself..."One reporter shouted back, full of righteous indignation. "Mr. Prescott! We know you're rich and powerful, but that doesn't give you the right to get Mr. Hayes off the hook!"First he sabotaged a major national project, and then he tried to kill someone. Which one of those is he innocent of?!"Julian arrogantly swept his gaze over Evelyn and the resentful Ryan beside her. With a sigh, he rested a hand on my shoulder. "Man, you've been through a lot."The next moment, several bodyguards and lawyers appeared behind him. They pulled out a thick stack of documents and flung them into the air."Everyone, you've all been saying we pulled our investment because Nathan told

I picked up the microphone in front of me. Before I could say a word, the reporters below started firing questions."Mr. Hayes! Did you try to murder a researcher out of jealousy, or is there more to the story?""Mr. Hayes, you threatened to pull your investment unless the Monroe family went through with the marriage. Is that how an investor should behave?""Mr. Hayes, is it true that you've been removed from the Hayes Group board? And were you also the one who paid someone to disfigure Mr. Cole?"Evelyn looked at them, heartbroken, her face full of guilt. "Everyone, my fiancé is young and doesn't know any better. It's my fault for not guiding him properly. The reason I brought him here today is so he can apologize for everything he's done."With that one line, she cleverly answered every question the reporters had asked. To put it simply, I was the culprit, and I'd done everything they'd said. What a neat way to use someone else to do your dirty work. She'd probably long forgo

Half an hour later, Evelyn took me to the hospital where Ryan was staying."Apologize."I looked down. "I'm sorry."Her expression softened a lot. Only then did she flick the ash from the cigarette between her fingers and raise an eyebrow. "So even you can get backed into a corner, Nathan?"But back then, Ry was exactly where you are now. He was hurting even more than you are."I glanced up at her. "What do I have to do for you to leave me alone?"Evelyn crossed her legs and leaned lazily back against the leather couch. Casually, she asked Ryan, "Ry, you tell him. What do you want?"Ryan bit his index finger, playing innocent. "I... I just want to make peace with Mr. Hayes."Evelyn ruffled his hair helplessly. "I know you're timid. Let me handle it."Nathan, fill the gap in the Monroes' cash flow and tell that sleazy crowd of friends of yours to reinstate the research investments. And since you ruined Ry's face, you'll pay for his skin graft."Apologize to Ry publicly on ever
