SYLVIA

I sat still in front of the mirror as two maids adjusted the silver sleeves of my gown. I couldn't care less about the gown, the jewel-encrusted corset, or the grand banquet happening downstairs.

My mind kept drifting back to Willow. How could my own sister be so heartless? She had watched Cyprian put his hands on me, seen me begging for help, and walked away like I was nothing more than garbage on the floor.

"You look breathtaking, Lady Sylvia," one of the maids whispered, stepping back

STOLASFar away from the high sanctuary, deep within the subterranean bowels of the earth where no ray of sunlight had ever breached, I lay trapped in a forgotten cavern. The space inside the tomb was thick with the reek of wet earth, stagnant water, and rotting vegetation. No wind stirred the dark void. No creature crawled over the ancient ground. Then, my essence began to move.A wisp of my dark mist snaked out from a fissure in the rock wall. I stayed in the dead space, my presence pulsing with an unnatural, sickly violet light.Second by second, more of my dark vapors bled through the cracks, flowing together like spilled ink pouring into a basin. My mist gathered, expanding into a vortex that devoured the surrounding blackness. My flesh snapped into place. My bones cracked, locking together with unnatural speed. Tendons knitted across my open wounds, pulling blood-soaked skin back over my shattered ribs.I hit the ground with a dull thud, falling onto my hands and knees.A gasp t

SYLVIAI sat cross-legged on the clean sheets of my bed, the door to my chamber barred from the inside. The sun had dipped below the eastern peaks, leaving the high room bathed in cool, fading twilight.Outside, the wind howled through the mountain pines, but inside, the air was still.I rested my wrists on my knees, took a long breath, and closed my eyes.I pushed my mind inward, seeking the quiet centre behind my ribcage. The sleep came fast, pulling my awareness down into the familiar, endless void. The white space opened around me.There were no marble pillars, no blood stains, no divine messengers in silver robes. Just the vast, milky sea of light stretching in every direction. The aches in my body were gone, but the dark spot deep in my blood remained, a tiny, cold ink stain floating in the centre of my spirit.A shadow fell across the white expanse ahead.A tall figure stepped through the light. He wore the simple embroidered robes of the old royal court, his long silver hair t

SYLVIAThe morning mist hung low over the grass as I stepped through the arched exit into the open environment. The ground beneath my boots felt solid, wet with early dew, a strong contrast to the blood-slicked sanctuary surface that still haunted my thoughts.Across the expansive open space, two mounds of fresh earth stood side by side near the ancient boundary oak.The wolf pack elders had prepared the resting places according to traditional customs. The bodies of my mother and Cyprian had been cleansed, wrapped in fine grey cloth, and laid beneath the soil where the roots of the old tree could watch over them. White river rocks had been arranged in neat circles around each grave, marking their memory for as long as the pack remained on these grounds.I walked toward the graves with purposeful, measured steps. My body still ached from the divine energy drain, but the fire inside my mind kept me upright.Vane walked half a pace behind my shoulder. His broad frame provided a comfortin

SYLVIAA pale beam of golden sunlight struck my eyelids, warm and unblinking.I pulled a breath into my lungs, the scent of lavender and clean linen replacing the copper stench of spilled blood and burnt stone. My eyes opened. I lay on a high bed wrapped in white sheets, inside a room I had never seen before. Tall arched windows looked out over green hills stretching toward a quiet mountain range.I tried to sit up, but my limbs refused the command. My body felt empty, stripped of every drop of strength and divine power. The magic beneath my skin, usually hummed like a hive of bees, was dead silence."Do not force yourself to rise, child," a voice spoke from the corner. The woman in white sat on a low wooden chair beside a stone hearth. She wore the same clean robes, her silver hair braided loosely over one shoulder. She held a shallow porcelain bowl in her lap, mixing dried leaves with a small wooden pestle."Where am I?" I rasped, my throat feeling like dry sand. "Where is Vane?""

SYLVIAMy fingers relaxed against the blood-slicked masonry, slipping away from Vane's shirt as every fibre in my arms surrendered. The last thread holding my mind upright snapped. My cheek hit the ruined ground beside his shoulder, my vision greying out as dark clouds swept in from the edges of my mind.My body went limp, motionless in the pooling red fluid.Beside me, the woman in white knelt. She did not recoil at the blood soaking into the lower hem of her clean dress. She extended both palms an inch above the jagged tear in Vane's body. No black smoke rose from her hands. No wild energy crackled through the space. Instead, an illumination as soft as dawn spread from her fingers, sinking into his flesh.Vane's body, which had been thrashing in agony under my corrupted power, settled into a deep stillness. His ragged gasps eased, turning into steady, even breaths. The deep crimson fluid that had been spurting from his body ceased its flow, the open edges of his flesh knitting toge

SYLVIAI pressed both palms down onto Vane's chest, forcing every drop of energy left in my body into his open wound. The corrupted black light poured from my skin in thick, volatile waves, mixing directly with his blood as his whole body jerked beneath my touch."Stay awake!" I shouted into his face, my voice cracking violently as tears ran down my cheeks, cutting pale tracks through the crimson stains on my skin. "Look at me, Vane! Look right at me! You survived the border! You survived his commander! You cannot close your eyes now! Do you hear me? Keep them open!"Vane's lips parted, a small line of dark blood trailing down his chin and pooling in the hollow of his neck. His hand twitched against my wrist, his fingers feeling freezing cold against my burning skin. His eyes were unfocused, glassy and wet, struggling to hold mine as his chest rose in short, uneven, agonizing pulls."I am trying, Sylvia," he rasped, his voice barely a breath above the sound of my heaving lungs. "I am.

SYLVIA "Crypian?" I whispered, sounding pathetic. He didn't even flinch at the sound of my voice, nor did he turn to look at me. He just kept basking in Willow's beauty and Willow? She had her face turned to him. I could see the care for me that she had shown in the attic slowly fading away."Cr

SYLVIA "I... I can't," I whimpered."Swear it!" she barked, shaking my arms. "Swear you won't marry the Prince!”For years, I had been the shadow of my sister. I was the Omega who scrubbed the floors while Willow practised her dancing with teachers that we struggled to afford. I was the daughter w

SYLVIA They didn't wait for me to respond before dragging me away. “W-wait. I can explain.” I tried begging but they refused to listen and everyone was already snickering and making fun of me. I turned my head in Willow's direction, begging for her to help me but she turned her head away, coveri
