ISABELLA’S POV.

My feet began to fail me. I lost total balance of my body.

I began to shake and the heels I was wearing made the whole matter worse.

I began to feel dizzy as well, as I visualized in my head all the notes I had received for the past few hours.

“Your aunt sends her regards.”

“He knows you lied.”

“Trust no one, especially not him.”

I was losing my mind. I was about to drown in a huge and deep pool of confusion.

The note slipped from my hand and I managed to bend over to pick it u

Isabella's POV Matteo stepped closer, closing the distance between us. His hand came up to cup my face, his thumb tracing along my cheekbone with a gentleness that made my breath catch."I can't wait to marry you," he murmured, his voice low and sincere in a way that made my heart skip. "I know this isn't how either of us expected things to happen, but I—" He paused, searching for words. "I'm glad it's you, Isabella."Before I could respond, before I could process what he had just said, his lips were on mine. The kiss was different from the ones before. Not urgent or demanding, but slow and deliberate, as though he was savouring every moment. His other hand found the small of my back, pulling me closer until our bodies were pressed together, until I could feel his heartbeat against my chest.I should have pulled away and remembered all the reasons why this was dangerous, why I couldn't let myself feel what I was feeling, why I should hate him in the more instead of falling into the

  • The Ruthless Mafia Fake Bride   Chapter 42

Isabella's POV The morning of the engagement party arrived with an almost surreal quality. I woke to find my room transformed. There were boxes and bags scattered across every surface, each one containing something Matteo had sent up for me to wear tonight.I sat up in bed, staring at the display with a mixture of wonder and unease. There were dresses, at least five of them, each more beautiful than the last, ranging from classic elegance to modern sophistication. Jewellery boxes containing pieces that probably cost more than I used to earn in a year. Shoes in different styles, all in my exact size.Everything I could possibly need, and more.I got up and began opening boxes, examining each item. A midnight blue gown with delicate beading. A sleek black dress that would hug every curve. The emerald green one his father had given me, carefully pressed and ready. Each one was exquisite, clearly chosen with care. But they're too much. Too much attention to detail for this to be just

  • The Ruthless Mafia Fake Bride   Chapter 41

Isabella's POV I turned back around to face my aunt, but she was already gone, disappeared into the crowd like smoke, leaving me alone at the table with my half-finished coffee and a thousand unanswered questions.Matteo's eyes scanned the café until they found me. His expression was unreadable as he crossed the space between us, weaving between tables until he stood in front of me."Did you follow me?" The question came out angrier than I intended, but I couldn't help it. The fury at being tracked, at having my one chance to speak with my aunt ruined, sent anger radiating through me in hot waves."Yes." He pulled out the chair my aunt had vacated moments ago and sat down. "I followed you.""I told you I was meeting friends.""And I told you that you needed protection. When my men reported that you'd deliberately lost them, I came to find you myself." His voice was calm. "I was only protecting you, Isabella.""Protecting me?" I nearly spat the words. "Or spying on me?""Both, if ne

  • The Ruthless Mafia Fake Bride   Chapter 40

Isabella's POV I needed to get out of this house. I needed space to think, to process everything that had happened, to figure out what my next move should be.But more than that, I needed answers. And there was only one person who could give them to me.I found Matteo in his office, poring over documents that I assumed had something to do with the Caroline assignment. He looked up when I knocked on the doorframe."I need to leave the house today," I announced without preamble. His expression immediately became guarded. "Where are you going?"I had prepared for this question, had my lie ready. "To see some friends. I haven't spoken to them in weeks, and with the engagement party tomorrow, I thought it would be good to touch base. Let them know what's happening in my life."It was plausible enough. A woman about to get engaged would want to tell her friends, would want that connection to her old life before everything changed completely.Matteo studied me for a moment, and I could see

  • The Ruthless Mafia Fake Bride   Chapter 39

Isabella's POV Because despite everything, despite the circumstances that had brought me here, I found myself actually caring about what happened to him. Because watching him hurt made me feel so bad and bitter. Because Vincenzo had rubbed me the wrong way from the moment I met him, and I didn't want to see him win.But I couldn't say any of that. Not yet. Not when I was still trying to understand what I felt."Because we're a team, right? At least until this engagement party is over." I offered a small smile. "And because Vincenzo is insufferable, and I'd like to see him taken down a notch."That earned me a ghost of a smile. "He does have that effect on people.""So we're agreed? We work together on this, whatever this Caroline thing is, and we beat Vincenzo at his own game?"Matteo studied me, then nodded slowly. "Agreed. Though you should know what you're signing up for. This isn't going to be pleasant work.""I gathered that." I pushed away from the desk. "But we can discuss d

  • The Ruthless Mafia Fake Bride   Chapter 38

Isabella's POVI had stayed in the hallway after Matteo stormed off, unsure whether to follow him or give him space. But then I heard voices from the study, his and Vincenzo's, and something made me stop and press myself against the wall just outside the door and listen.I knew it was wrong. I knew I shouldn't be eavesdropping on a private conversation. But after everything that had happened today, the lunch with the don, his revelations about my mother, the confusion that had been building in my mind, I needed to understand what was happening in this house. What dynamics I was caught in the middle of.And what I heard made several things crystal clear.Vincenzo was an asshole. That much was obvious from his tone alone; mocking, superior, designed to needle Matteo in ways that suggested years of practice. He knew exactly which buttons to push, exactly how to undermine his h
