Chapter 4

Until recently, I had operated in a world where a single careless decision could cost someone their fortune, their freedom, or their life.

I had built my own weapons-trading network from the ground up, establishing connections across several international markets. Some of my business had involved supplying weapons to conflict zones in the Middle East, Somalia, and other regions where demand never seemed to disappear.

It had taken years of calculated decisions, sleepless nights, and sacrifices I would never speak about openly.

I had earned my position through intelligence, negotiation, and a willingness to make difficult choices when everyone else hesitated.

I hadn't inherited my business.

I had built it myself.

Every connection. Every deal. Every asset.

Mine.

Until someone betrayed me.

The betrayal had come from inside my own network. Someone who knew my operations, understood my security arrangements, and had access to information that should never have left my inner circle.

During the siege in Afghanistan, everything collapsed.

My operations were compromised. My assets disappeared. Money I had spent years accumulating vanished into accounts I couldn't trace. People I had trusted either turned their backs on me or disappeared before I could demand answers.

By the time I escaped, I had lost almost everything.

My business.

My resources.

My network.

And the security I'd once taken for granted.

I had survived, but survival came at a price.

I was forced to abandon the world I had built with my own hands and start over with a fraction of the money I once controlled.

For the first time in years, I had to worry about ordinary things.

Rent.

Groceries.

Bills.

Finding a job.

It was almost laughable.

I had once negotiated deals in rooms where powerful men measured every word and watched every movement.

Now, I was sitting in a cafe, wondering whether I could afford another cup of coffee if my job search continued to fail.

Life had a cruel sense of humor.

But I hadn't forgotten what happened in Afghanistan.

Not for a single day.

Someone had betrayed me, and I intended to find out who.

I would rebuild what I'd lost, piece by piece, if necessary. I would follow every lead, examine every connection, and uncover every secret until I found the person responsible.

I didn't know how long it would take.

I didn't know who I could still trust.

But I knew one thing.

I wasn't going to let the bastard get away with it.

And if working an ordinary office job could give me the money and stability I needed while I quietly gathered information, then so be it.

I could play the part.

I could smile, answer emails, organize schedules, and pretend my biggest concern was whether my boss preferred his coffee black.

After all, I had spent years learning how to read people, conceal my intentions, and recognize danger before it struck.

Being a secretary couldn't possibly be harder than surviving the world I'd just left.

Could it?

“Sevra?”

Victor's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

I realized I had been staring at him for several seconds without saying a word.

“Sorry,” I muttered. “I was thinking.”

“About my offer?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

I hesitated.

Every instinct told me to be careful. I knew nothing about Victor Haulette beyond what I'd observed during our brief encounters. I didn't know how he treated his employees, what kind of man he was behind closed doors, or why he was so willing to offer me a position without putting me through a proper interview.

But I did know that I needed a way forward.

And this opportunity had practically landed in my lap.

“I appreciate your offer,” I said carefully. “But I don't want you to hire me simply because you feel sorry for me.”

Something shifted in his expression.

For the first time, his smile seemed genuine.

“Do you always assume that people who offer you help must feel sorry for you?”

“No.” I paused. “Only when they offer me a job five minutes after meeting me.”

A low laugh escaped him.

His dimples appeared again.

Unbelievable. Even his laughter is distracting.

I immediately pushed the thought aside.

Victor leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on mine.

“Then let's make one thing clear, Sevra. I don't hire people out of pity.”

His voice remained calm, but there was an unmistakable firmness beneath it.

“If you accept this position, you'll be expected to do your job properly. I won't lower my standards for you, and I won't tolerate incompetence simply because we're acquainted.”

I held his gaze.

Good.

That was exactly what I wanted to hear.

“Then I'd like to know more about the position before I make a decision.”

His eyebrows lifted, as though he hadn't expected that answer.

Then he smiled.

“Fair enough.”

He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a business card, placing it on the table between us.

VICTOR HAULETTE

President and Chief Executive Officer

Haulette Corporation

My eyes widened slightly.

President and CEO.

Of course.

Because apparently, the universe had decided that a normal, uncomplicated day was too much to ask for.

I picked up the card and examined it.

“So you're really the owner of the company?”

“One of them,” he replied. “But I oversee its daily operations.”

I nodded slowly, trying to process the information.

The man sitting across from me wasn't merely some wealthy executive who happened to know the HR manager.

He was the person at the top of the entire corporate hierarchy.

Which meant that Anne, the woman who had practically thrown me out of her interview room, answered to him.

An unexpected opportunity began to take shape in my mind.

After dinner, Victor insisted on driving me home.I eventually gave in, on one condition: he had to drop me off at the entrance of the alley near the convenience store.“Are you sure you want to get off here, Miss?” Danny, Victor’s personal driver, asked as he pulled over.“Yes, this is fine.”“I’ll walk you inside,” Victor offered.I gave him a questioning look. “There’s no need. My house is just around the corner.”“How close?”Suppressing a sigh, I pointed toward an orange-painted flat nestled inside the alley. Bougainvillea flowers spilled across its front, adding a splash of color to the modest little flat.“There. You can see it from here.”Victor glanced at the house before finally relenting.“All right. Be careful, Sevra, and get some rest.”“Thank you, Victor. For everything today.” I smiled sincerely before turning to Danny. “Good night.”“Good night, Miss.”With a final wave, I headed toward the alley, relieved to have escaped an unnecessary escort to my front door.I had n

Thankfully, Victor was still occupied with a phone call in the adjoining room, so I could answer without worrying about interrupting him.The moment I saw Anthony's name on my screen, my heart practically leaped. Finally!Ever since I'd moved to New York, Anthony had made one rule crystal clear: I wasn't allowed to contact him first. Not even once.It wasn't because we'd grown apart. We were simply being careful. With our shared past in the weapons business, we couldn't afford to let anyone discover how closely we were connected. Until we were certain our communications were safe, silence was our best protection.Still, that didn't make waiting for his calls any easier.Anthony wasn't just my cousin. He was one of the few people I could trust with my life. We had always been on the same wavelength, often understanding each other with barely a word exchanged. Perhaps it was in our blood. We shared the same sharp instincts, the same calculating minds, and an unfortunate tendency to get

At four o'clock that afternoon, I accompanied Victor to the boardroom.Several directors were already seated around the conference table, their expressions serious as they reviewed the documents before them.I took my place and waited for Victor to introduce the matter.Once the discussion began, he asked me to present my findings. For a moment, I felt the pressure of having everyone's attention on me.Then I took a breath and began.I explained each problematic clause in detail, showing the directors where the contract failed to align with the supporting documents and how certain provisions could potentially expose the company to significant risks.I made sure to explain my reasoning clearly, supporting every point with the relevant paperwork. As I continued, the directors listened attentively. Some exchanged glances. Others leaned forward to examine the documents more closely.By the time I finished, their reactions suggested they were satisfied with my explanation.Victor wasted no

I approached Victor cautiously. He was so engrossed in his work that he didn't seem to notice me standing nearby. My gaze briefly fell to his wristwatch.Oops. A Patek Philippe. For a man like him, perhaps that was pocket change.I stepped closer to his desk and waited quietly, hoping he'd eventually notice me.He finally looked up."Come here. Stand beside me."His tone was flat, almost as if he were giving an ordinary instruction.I followed his directions and moved to the side of his desk. He turned his laptop toward me, then handed me a stack of documents that looked as though someone had thrown them together in a hurry."I want you to review this contract. Check for typos, incorrect information, and any discrepancies between the contract and these supporting documents.""All right."I accepted the papers and skimmed through them before carrying everything to a small desk in the corner of the room.

I had to admit, the whole situation was incredibly awkward.Victor sat directly across from me. He wasn't just some handsome man having lunch with me. He was my boss. And not just any boss, either. He was the CEO of one of the most powerful companies I'd ever encountered.I watched as he placed a piece of beef on his own plate. Before taking a bite, he looked up at me."So, how's your first day? Do you think you'll like it here?""So far, so good," I replied honestly. "I like it."A faint look of satisfaction crossed his face.He seemed pleased with my answer before returning his attention to his food.We ate quietly for a while. Then, just as I was beginning to relax, he spoke again."After lunch, you'll help me draft some letters. We'll work on them here in my office."I nearly choked on my food.Wait. What?I stared at him, wondering if I'd heard him correctly."Um, shouldn'

From the cafeteria, Michael took me to the thirty-fifth floor, where Haulette's security division was based. It was also one of the facilities where the company's bodyguards received their training.Until then, I'd known Haulette mainly for its real estate business and shopping malls. I hadn't realized the company also provided professional security services.Apparently, they supplied security personnel for offices and bodyguards for celebrities and well-known politicians.Michael explained that Haulette had numerous contracts with prominent public figures, providing highly trained bodyguards to protect them.I listened with growing interest."So, do the bodyguards do all their training here?" I asked."Not exactly. They start with physical training at one of our camps in another city. Once they pass that stage, they come here to learn about security strategies and situational awareness."He paused before adding, "Being a bodyguard isn't just about being physically strong. They need to
