Chapter 3 The Truth Laid Bare

Author: Giant Tomato
The next morning, Mia came downstairs draped in my favorite silk robe. She carried herself with deliberate grace, a smug little sway in her steps. The faint fragrance that trailed after her made my chest tighten—it was the perfume Noah and I had blended together in Gallia during the height of our romance. It was the only bottle of its kind in the world, and it was supposed to be mine.

I sat at the dining table, watching her coldly as she slid into the chair across from me.

"Mila, did you sleep well last night?" Mia smiled with feigned innocence as she rested her wrist on the table, making sure the watch on her arm caught the light.

She was just a poor student—there was no way she could afford something like that. There was no doubt in my mind that Noah had given it to her. And now, she was flaunting it right in my face.

I ignored her, lowering my gaze to eat my bowl of oatmeal. She seemed unfazed, picking up a bowl of bone broth and swirling it slowly with her spoon.

"Noah treats me so well," she said lightly. "He knows I've been struggling with morning sickness, so he got up in the middle of the night to make this for me. He said it's good for the baby. Mila, would you like to try some too?"

The sharp crack of porcelain echoed through the room as I slammed the bowl out of her hands and shattered it against the floor.

"Ahhh!" Mia shrieked, darting straight into Noah's arms the moment he stepped inside. She buried her face against his chest, sobbing pitifully. "Noah, I'm so scared. Is Mila losing her mind?"

Noah immediately shielded the "terrified" Mia behind him. When his gaze found me, there was nothing but anger in his eyes. "Mila, look at yourself. What are you doing? Mia is pregnant, she's from my hometown, and she's the very girl we sponsored through school as a couple. What reason do you have to treat her this way?"

I refused to play along with their act any longer. "I know the child Mia is carrying is yours."

Noah froze for a split second before breaking into a smile. "Mila, haven't you always wanted a baby?"

That smile twisted cruelly as he went on. "Mia is carrying one for you. Shouldn't you be thanking me?"

"Thank you?" My hands trembled with rage. "You want me to thank you for knocking up your mistress so she can give me a child?"

Just then, Noah's mother walked in, carrying chicken soup she had made since bright and early. "Noah, did you just say Mia's baby is yours?"

Noah nodded. At once, his mother's eyes lit up, and she burst into laughter. "Heavens above, finally! Our family is going to have an heir!"

She stormed up to me, jabbing a finger in my face as her voice rose in fury. "You barren woman! Our family has hung by a single son for three generations, and we've given you three years with not so much as a stir in your belly. And now you dare try to harm my precious grandson? What wickedness are you plotting?!"

Noah's father chimed in, his tone no less harsh. "Mila, marrying into this family was the best thing that ever happened to you. You can't give him children yourself, yet you begrudge him for finding someone who can? Don't be so unreasonable!"

Shameless didn't even begin to cover this family.

"Mila, please don't be upset." Mia peeked out from behind Noah, one hand protectively stroking her belly. "Didn't the doctor say it would be difficult for you to conceive? Noah only did this for your own good."

The world spun around me. My body shook so violently I could barely breathe. I tried to speak, to point at them and shout the truth, but before I could form the words, everything went dark. My knees buckled, and I collapsed to the floor.

In the CEO's office on the top floor of Justice Corp., the massive holographic screen was broadcasting the midday news."The highly publicized Justice Corp. fraud case has reached its final verdict today. The principal offender, Noah Carter, convicted of fraud, embezzlement, and intentional harm, with evidence clear and irrefutable, and with a profoundly negative impact on society, has been sentenced to life imprisonment."His accomplice, Cynthia Kingstone, convicted of fraud and intentional harm, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. His accomplice, Mia Lane, convicted of fraud, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison."My assistant placed a report gently on my desk. "Noah got into a fight over a dinner roll in prison and had his leg broken. He keeps insisting he's the CEO of Justice Corp., so everyone thinks he's insane now."Mia… She lost her mind after her miscarriage and spends her days muttering about her dream of marrying rich. As for Cynthia, she curses the other two e

My grandfather and I walked into the courtroom and took the front row of the gallery. Across from us in the defendant's dock, the three people who had once been well dressed now wore prison uniforms and looked haggard.Noah stared at me with bloodshot eyes, remorse written across his face. Cynthia cowered, unable to meet anyone's gaze. And Mia instinctively guarded her swollen belly, her eyes darting away.Noah's lawyer offered a feeble defense until the prosecutor presented the first piece of evidence: a recorded phone call between Noah and the director of the psychiatric hospital. On the tape, Noah's voice was impatient and vicious. "Money's not the issue. Just lock her up until she's gone for good."The prosecutor offered them no breathing room. One piece of evidence followed another: the forged psychiatric evaluation, bank records showing Noah's embezzlement to buy cars and houses for Mia, surveillance footage of Cynthia conspiring to transfer my assets—the proofs were ironclad.

My grandfather's team worked with astonishing speed. Within half an hour of the meeting's end, the compiled evidence had already been delivered to both the police and the prosecutor's office.Forged signatures, embezzlement of corporate assets, illegal transfers, collusion with a psychiatric hospital for unlawful detention—each charge alone was enough to put them behind bars for decades. The arrests happened simultaneously. The police split into three teams and struck like thunder. The first team raided the Justice Corp. general manager's office. Noah's people were frantically tearing up documents, trying to destroy the last traces of evidence, when officers broke down the door and pinned them to the floor on the spot. The second team hit the Justice Residence. Cynthia was in the middle of her beauty routine when the cold cuffs clicked around her wrists, the mud mask cracked across her cheeks. The third team went to the city's most luxurious mall. Mia, clutching the supplementary

The bodyguards hauled Noah out immediately, his feet scrabbling futilely across the polished floor as he cursed and spat obscenities. But it wasn't until I watched him struggle all the way to the door that I spoke, my voice light as if discussing the weather. "Oh, I almost forgot to tell you something."Noah froze mid-struggle and turned his bloodshot eyes back on me."That limited-edition Porsche you embezzled company funds to buy for Mia? She drove it yesterday to meet Steven Royce. The damsel you thought you were protecting… seems she wasn't such an innocent bunny after all."Noah's eyes widened with incredulity. Shock and humiliation twisted his face, and his whole body trembled as the last of his composure shattered.Once he was dragged away, silence blanketed the boardroom. I didn't give the directors much time to process the scene. One by one, I handed out the evidence: Noah's forged signatures, his embezzlement records, the trail of how he had gutted the company from within

An hour later, I linked arms with my grandfather and stepped into the Justice Corp. building. Behind us, the staff whispered and pointed."My God—isn't that Ms. Justice? Hasn't she gone mad?""I heard Mr. Carter sent her away for treatment. How did she get out?""Look at her in that dress. So creepy. She hasn't been triggered, has she?"In the elevator, my grandfather patted my hand reassuringly. "Don't mind them. That fool Cynthia spread the news herself, saying you'd gone mad. She's planning to rally those old cronies to strip you of your inheritance at today's meeting.""Is that so?" I smoothed my lipstick against the mirrored elevator door. "Perfect—saves me the trouble of sending out invitations for their funerals one by one."When we pushed open the boardroom door, the room erupted. Cynthia, who sat beside the head seat, went pale at the sight of me, then quickly switched to an expression of grief and outrage. "Mila! How did you get out? The doctor said your condition was s

Noah froze mid-motion.I slowly lifted my head toward the doorway.Standing there was my grandfather—well into his seventies yet still sharp-eyed and imposing. He wore a black jacket, his lion-headed cane striking the floor with a heavy thud that echoed through the room like a gavel. Behind him stood Justice Corp.'s elite legal team and a line of bodyguards in black suits, their faces grim and unyielding. His piercing gaze swept across the wrecked hospital room before settling on Noah's hand gripping my wrist. His voice was as cold and cutting as steel. "Who dares lay a finger on my granddaughter?"The blood drained instantly from Noah's face. He stumbled back, releasing me at once. "M-Mr. Justice? I thought you were still abroad! I—Mila's sick. I was just about to take her home—""Silence!" My grandfather's roar cracked through the air, slicing Noah's pathetic act to shreds. He didn't even grant him another glance. One of the lawyers strode forward, dropped a thick envelope of d
