Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Bloom
Right after the words left Vanessa's mouth, Scott shoved her hard and snapped, "What nonsense are you talking about?"

Caught off guard, Vanessa stumbled backward and scraped her arm against the edge of a cheap table, leaving a bloody gash.

I panickedly lunged forward to catch her, but my hands passed straight through her body. I still wasn't used to being dead, even after two years.

Jordan burst into loud, terrified wails, but no one came forward to comfort him. Both Scott and Devin were too busy fussing over Nicole.

Once they managed to soothe her, Devin turned to Vanessa with a dark expression. "You know how weak Nicole is, yet you still upset her on purpose. You're really just as vicious as Shirley."

Vanessa slowly got to her feet. The hatred in her eyes intensified when she heard his taunts. "If saying a couple of words to her makes me vicious, what about everything you did to Shirley? Doesn't that make you 100 times worse?"

She pointed at Nicole and laughed until tears welled up in her eyes. "Look at her. She has rosy cheeks and doesn't look sick at all, yet the Shirley you call vicious was skin and bones when she died. She didn't even have enough money to cover emergency treatment when she bled out."

"That's a lie!" Devin shot back without a second thought. "We never took away Shirley's cards, even when we were punishing her."

He sounded completely certain, but I could see his hands shaking uncontrollably. Even a flicker of complicated emotion flashed in Scott's eyes.

Were they worried about me?

I shook my head and immediately dismissed the thought.

The first time they forced me to give Nicole blood, they had reacted the same way when they saw how pale my lips were, but they eventually got used to it.

Whenever I resisted and refused to donate, Scott would say, "It's just a little blood, and you'll recover after a bowl of chicken soup. Stop being so dramatic."

When I went to Devin and showed him my bruised arms from the frequent blood draws, he simply said, "Bruises fade in a few days. You've been doing this for a year now, so how are you still not used to it?"

But when I was injured and needed a blood transfusion to survive, the two of them stepped in to stop Nicole from giving her blood to me.

"Giving blood takes a massive toll on the body," they had said. "We spent two weeks nursing you back to health when you'd just scratched your finger. There's no way we'd ever let you do something that could hurt you.

"Shirley is healthy and strong. She'll survive a minor injury like that."

I couldn't stand the way they were blind to my suffering, trying to force me to be just like them, accustomed to sacrificing everything for Nicole. So after leaving the hospital, I ran away from home, but they tracked me down and dragged me back.

For the next two years, they kept me under tight lock and key, for fear that if I escaped, Nicole would lose her blood bank.

After three years of blood transfusions, Nicole was finally nursed back to health. While Devin and Scott happily threw a huge celebration for her, I weighed less than 90 pounds and was admitted to the hospital, but they never cared at all.

As I lay alone in the hospital bed, Nicole entered the room.

She looked radiant, and there was a triumphant smile on her face as she said, "Neither Scott nor Devin cares about you anymore, Shirley. There's no point in you staying with the Webers, so why don't I help you disappear for good?"

With that, she picked up a fruit knife from the bedside table and stabbed her shoulder.

Scott and Devin rushed into the room. Under Nicole's calculated frame-up, I became a murderer who had attempted to kill her.

Refusing to believe a single word I said no matter how much I sobbed and explained, they sent me to a psychiatric hospital that night.

I desperately fought against it and gripped Devin's arm tightly, begging through tears, "We grew up together, Devin. Can't you trust me one more time?"

Devin shot me an indifferent look and pried my fingers off, one after the other. "You've hurt Nicole way too many times, Shirley. How am I supposed to trust you?"

I screamed for Scott, but he wouldn't even spare me a cold glance.

With that, they walked away and left me abandoned in the dark, hopeless psychiatric hospital.

I was locked away with psychotic patients and suffered brutal beatings every single day. Whenever I tried to escape, I was punished with electric shocks.

It wasn't until four months later that I had a chance to knock out a nurse delivering medication and escape.

Vanessa had sorrow written all over her face as she looked at Devin and asked, "Do you know why Shirley hated you so much yet still chose to give birth to your son?"

Scott continued, "You made Shirley suffer so much, and now I'm going to make sure you experience every bit of it yourself."Since you love throwing yourself down the stairs, you can do it a few more times. Since you love stabbing yourself, you can keep it up."As Nicole clutched her throat, her eyes widened with every word he spoke. She wanted to beg for mercy, but seeing the icy, dead look in his and Devin's eyes, she finally dropped the act altogether.Slowly, she got to her feet and revealed her true colors."Yes, I framed Shirley. But am I the only one who drove her to her grave? Don't forget. Whenever I set her up, she tried to explain to you, but neither of you ever had the patience to listen until she finished."Then, a thought seemed to cross her mind, and she laughed."Even if she ended up in the psychiatric hospital because of me, you two are definitely the ones she hated most. I was a nobody to her, but you… You were her biological older brother and the husband who swo

Devin came to Scott. He had been crying for so long that his tears had run dry, leaving his eyes red and swollen. As he stumbled toward the door, a sudden blast of cold wind made him shudder.I followed him back to Scott's house next door and saw Scott sitting numbly on the couch, as if he had been drained of life. When he saw Devin approach, he stared for a long time before saying in a cold voice, "It's time we settle some scores."Devin nodded. He took out his phone, called his assistant, and had him take them to the hospital. In the hospital room, Nicole's IV drip had just finished running. Her complexion was sallow and unhealthy without her makeup. As it turned out, she hadn't been faking her illness after all. She genuinely needed a kidney transplant.Once the nurse left, she immediately dialed a number."I need you to come pick me up within the next two hours and make sure no one can trace where I'm going."Whatever the person on the other end of the line replied caused h

After Devin regained consciousness, he went mad trying to find my traces in the house. But after searching every room, he realized that in just two years, all traces of my existence had been erased.A photo of him and Nicole took the place where our wedding photo used to hang. Even the curtains and couches in the house were swapped out to match Nicole's taste.Devin's eyes were bloodshot as he summoned the maids and demanded to know where all my belongings had gone.Terrified by his crazed state, a maid replied, "All of Mrs. Pollard's belongings were thrown out on Ms. Nicole's orders, Mr. Pollard. You gave your consent beforehand."As if someone had violently wrapped their hands around his throat, Devin stood frozen in place. His face contorted in agony, and he couldn't say a word in response.Seeing that he was on the verge of breaking down, the maid quickly added, "I remember now, Mr. Pollard. I moved some of Mrs. Pollard's belongings into the basement."As if he had just seen

Just before leaving, Devin glanced at Jordan, cradled in the bodyguard's arms. For a moment, it was as if he saw a trace of my face in Jordan's features, and he ordered the bodyguard to bring him home. The moment they arrived, he immediately arranged for a DNA test. For some reason, I found myself following Devin home, though I had spent the last two years by Vanessa's side.Meanwhile, Scott contracted his assistant, Adrian Hoover, to investigate my life over the past two years, along with my recent whereabouts. For the next three days, Devin and Scott acted as though nothing had happened. They went to work and lived their lives like normal, but whenever they were left alone, they looked utterly lost.Nicole complained about feeling unwell and came to them several times, but the two men, who had once catered to her every whim, turned her away in unison.Three days later, Adrian prepared two identical copies of the finalized investigation report—one for Scott and the other for Dev

Devin's face turned deathly pale, and his voice trembled with sheer disbelief. "What do you mean by that?"Seeing his eyes lock on the battered tin in her hands, Vanessa let out a mocking laugh. "Exactly what's on your mind right now."You spent the whole day throwing a fit, demanding to see Shirley, right? Now that I've brought her to you, why don't you have the courage to open the tin and see it for yourselves?"Scott pressed a hand to his chest and stared at my memorial portrait blankly. "No, this can't be real. You must be lying to me."When they repeatedly denied the truth, Vanessa simply yanked the lid off to show them. The lid opened to reveal my ashes, which she held out to Devin and Scott."Take a good look. This is Shirley, who has burned down to a handful of ashes. Do you still want her to give Nicole a kidney?"Why don't you search through these ashes and see if you can dig up a kidney for Nicole?"As she stepped closer, Devin and Scott instinctively backed away unti
